The rat race is tough at first, but it's a short level. All you have to do is memorize the layout of the third race and get the timing down on headbutting the rat when you need to, and you'll be able to get through it with few or no deaths. I used to think it was the toughest stage, but now I would probably give that honor to the Terra Tubes.

Unfortunately there is the rat race glitch where sometimes the third rat won't drop down after kicking the bomb. That really sucks.

A huge tip that I honestly didn't even notice and maybe you already know but you don't need to double tap to run everytime you hit a beam.

You can just hold the directional button as you fall to continue your sprint.

  • For me it has to be beat em ups. People give me tips and stuff and I still can't seem to follow through to a win. I've beaten the Turtles games, but Double Dragon and others like it elude me for some reason.
  • Any fucking mega man. I've beaten II but I can't beat any others.
  • Star Wars has eluded me and frustrated me for years. One of the few games I had as a kid that I cannot beat, along with Back to the Future 2 & 3, Hunt for Red October, and Kiwi Kraze. Other games I played as a kid that friends and other family members had that I can't beat include Ninja Gaiden, Battletoads, Double Dragon 3, and Battle of Olympus.
  • Battletoads springs to mind first and foremost for me, also Ikari Warriors.

I feel like the former is a "one of these days" thing, where I could possibly do it, the latter... just no, no indeed.
  • That spawn and AI patterns on Ikari Warriors are strongly defined, so it is quite easy to learn and memorize them. And then just beat the game.

The tough part is dealing with how lethargic your speed is until you get the SS upgrade. After that it gets very doable, specially if you are going for a 1CC game.

No death it is... a tad bit harder. But I am sure you can 1CC it with some ease if you put some effort on it!

Indeed! With the former I think it was A-B-B-A when you died... yet, at some point that seemed to stop working.

    With the latter, yeah

Oh, and let's not forget Battlekid

Ninja Gaiden is one of those tough NES games that I'd been playing off and on since I was a kid (back around when it came out), but I could never beat it until 2015.

Last year's Battletoads contest pushed me to get better at it and finally beat it.

Yeah, I already knew about that.

But you still need to do some double tapping as soon as the third rat appears in order to start running earlier. And there's a point near the beginning of the race where you can headbutt him and he'll get stuck up there for a bit, giving you a huge head start.

Yeah I knew you would have known, it was directed at DevinShidaker.

I guess anyone who read it who didn't know could have taken the advice though...No harm done here.

  • Isolated Warrior

Star Wars (although haven't played it for a long time)

Adventures of Bayou Billy (got really close and I should be able to tackle this game)

Life Force (I hate level 3)
  • These are just the games that I made a sincere effort to beat, and came up short:

Legend of Zelda = I made it to the final dungeon, but never made it to Gannon. Then my save file vanished.

    Batman = I couldn't beat the Joker

Super Mario Bros 2 = I don't think I ever made it past world 4

    Punch-Out! = Can't beat Mr.Sandman

Then there are many games I have played and made no discernible progress at all, either because I don't really know what do, or its just punishingly hard right out of the gate, and I bailed quickly, but there are too many of those to mention.
