I think Resident Evil 2 is OK. It was one of the first successful survival horror games right? Maybe Silent Hill could be a better choice, since it's more horror, where RE is more action and action was really common back then
Banjo Kazooie and Link's Awakening at #1? Why are we even discussing this list lol.
I'm not sure how you can make a list including PC games and not have Starcraft, I game that is still played competitively almost 20 years later. I don't think this guy even played PC games in the 90s.
Link's Awakening really is the best Zelda game!!! ^_^
This. I've always ranked Link's Awakening above A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time and I defend my opinion on this.
Most people got their impression of Link's Awakening after the DX version ruined a lot of the puzzles and progression incentives. The player rarely feels like they discovered something cool because the game gives it all away, and everything else has since become a staple of the series. The original has amazing/perfect game design that I still feel elevates it above the others.

I think Zelda 2 is better than OoT, though
Link's Awakening feels truer to the "pick up and play" aspects of the original Legend of Zelda, which is the main reason I'd rate it higher than ALTTP.
ALTTP is down the development tree of having too much exposition, along with "fat link" looking more like he belongs in a Willow game than LoZ.
This is an impossible list to make well and without extreme controversy, but I'd say Link is the only one remotely close to a reasonable ranking, maybe Metroid as well. Some of these wouldn't make my top 1000.
It is weird to see a 90s list with no Street Fighter 2 and A Link to the Past.
But these lists (unless they feature a lot of obscure stuff) are mainly only good for provoking discussion on internet message boards, so the more questionable they are the better they serve their purpose.
I agree 100%. The author was looking to get a sea of "wtf is THIS game on the list?!" and "why the hell is THAT game not on the list?!"
I'm happy to not see the list succumb to including OOT, but for the same reasons would rather have seen them drop Goldeneye, as well.
Definitely a few oddballs on the list, especially if we're talking about all platforms, including PC (I'd assume they're talking about the PC version of DOOM).
From a technical standpoint, Quake is probably one of the more important games of the 90's.
Then you have games like Diablo (1 or 2) and Starcraft/Warcraft.
I feel goldeneye deserves to be there over some of the other stuff, it literally revolutionized home console multi-player (and fps, for that matter) but agree with OoT

Yeah, that's the same vibe I get. Nintendoage feeding a troll article once again.

I don't really have any issue with NA or anyone else 'falling for this.' It sparks the discussions like this one that most of us want to be having anyhow, and in this case, its not a bad list at all.
Some honorable mentions that would warrant consideration that haven't ben brought up - not saying they should definitely make the list, but worth consideration:
Tony Hawk's pro skater - I know they have not necessarily aged well, but that series kept a lot of people captivated for a long time.
NBA Jam - no matter which side of the SNES vs Sega debate you were on, NBA Jam was the ultimate multiplayer game at home or in the arcade and it holds up very well.
Tecmo Super Bowl - ok, this has already been mentioned, but I thought it was worth mentioning again. Competitions are still going on all over and the game is being rereleased every year with current rosters because there has never been another football game that even comes close.
Mega Man 3 - Part 2 gets most of the love here, but in my opinion, this is where the series really went to the level that make it arguably the best of all time.
I know this is a Nintendo site, but I'm a bit surprised grand theft auto III or another later realize wasn't mentioned considering it's an influential list. Also PC seems to be lacking.
Someone with more knowledge may be able to commen, but wasn't super Mario RPG the first Mario game to really break away from the usual trend? Not saying I'd have it four, but it certainly changed Mario and made a user friendly RPG that anyone at any age could understand.

It wasn't released in the 90's. Grand theft auto 3 was a 2000's game.

Ah well that would do it. Not sure why I thought it was earlier.

For the record though, i agree with you. If there is a 2000's list, this game should be on top. This game really drove home the idea of sandbox gaming.
I'd like to say I rolled my eyes and stopped reading the original list immediately after seeing DKC, but then I noticed Link's Awakening at number one. Flawless list. A+.
Comments
Totally forgot that Counter Strike was released in mid-1999. It's was a hugely influential game that's still played competitively today.
I lumped that in with Half Life, but I could see it either way
That's fair.
Id take out Resident Evil 2 and Goldeneye.
