Pretty funny that you'd rather inhale toxic smoke than gain a few pounds.
Ever see obese old people? I'm not talking about chubby/fat. They don't really exist. You still see a lot of people in their 70's and 80's still smoking. Not saying that those numbers are high, but they're higher than obese old people. Being overweight adds a lot more risk to your health than people realize.
That said, I need to quit as well.
I guess it depends on the definition of obese. If you are talking about elderly folk with a high bmi, which is classified as obese,I see those more often than you think where I work.
If if you are talking obese as in 300-400 pound people, then yes you don't see them often. There's only one that comes to our clinic right now that fits the bill. Not sure of exact age (70s for sure) but he weighs 438 pounds.

Yeah, talking about the upper ranges for sure. I'm not trying to justify smoking or anything like that, but gaining weight, depending on your situation, can be much worse than smoking.
I hope I'm not the first, but I'm in. Been smoking for 5 years, and the wife already quit. Feel free to PM me about what you had in mind, or post here.

Oh I absolutely agree with that. Smoking is terrible, but being morbidly obese is worse. Every person we've ever seen at the clinic who's fit that description has a lot more pain and certainly a lot more difficulty in doing their physical therapy.
I'm considering quitting in April when the $2 tax increase occurs here in Cali. I have made many attempts that never work out because my wife refuses to quit with me and it becomes extremely tempting. The tax increase might be enough to convince her to stop alongside me.

Nah, roughly $8. A pack of Marlboro 100's is around $6 now. We could easily skirt the tax by buying from the indian reservation at $25 per carton but the cigarettes are very harsh so I'd rather just quit entirely.
Unless that new tax law somehow effects sovriegn nations most smokers here will probably resort to that and make the natives a shitload of money.

You could lead by example and quit sooner. Maybe seeing how much better you feel will prompt her to also stop. Just a though.
im gonna work up something in the next few days we can do here as a group to be part of and have some fun.
Been smoking for 24 years non stop although i tried to quit in university when i was 22, the best i could do was 6-7 a day but that didnt last long. Im currently reducing from 2 acks to 1.5 a day, i would love to quit but its very difficult, plus most people here smoke and smoking is allowed in public areas unlike most of europe at least.

Yeah I suppose I'm just kicking the can down the road. I'll give it a shot with ya. No sense in waiting until april if I can do it now.
Yes I am a smoker and I'd like to quit. But first I need to lose some weight, they say you gain a ton when you quit and my Girlfriend convinced me I'm better off doing one at a time rather than both at the same time. OP, since you quit for 2 years, just curious, how did it affect your weight?
Cigarettes suppress your appetite. Also when you quit, the food you eat should taste better.
well that explains the weight gain. tasty food does sound good though..
A family friend of mine who has smoked for at least thirty years recently quit. He said he never realized that he wasn't tasting his food and now everything tastes unbelievable. That said, he has only gained a couple of pounds.
I smoke, though not as heavily as most. I have always been right around half of a pack a day, around 4 packs a week. Its tough to kick. I love the idea of quiting at some point, but I just flat out don't want to. High stress job and its hard to imagine getting through a hard day without stepping out for a smoke every hour or two. I have had a lot of friends give vaping a shot and the results have been impressive. I have tried theirs, and I don't see how it could fill the void, but I do plan on buying one and giving it a shot. Never know. Good luck man. I have crazy respect for people who quit. Some of the sharpest and most determined people you can imagine are unable to do so - it says more than people realize when someone does. Its not something non-smokers can understand, and that's fair.

I know what you mean. And regarding vaping, I bought one and did not like it. The idea is cutting down the nicotine intake a bit at a time, but it didn't give the same satisfaction that a normal cigarette did. For me it made me want to smoke even more, because like it wasn't good enough, if that makes sense? I'd rather just quit and be done with it, than have that not good enough feeling and want it more. It's really weird to explain
Been smoking for 20yrs now, been tapering off some the past year from 2packs a day down to a bit over half a pack a day now.
I've tried the vape which I guess its helping some as I tend to smoke out of boredom so I go to the vape if I catch myself wanting a 3rd cig after just smoking 2, I like the vape, but the maintenance on its a bitch and all around its just cheaper to stick to cigs with all the e juices, replacing the tanks and other things it starts adding up quick, (already burnt up two tanks, and broke one trying to "clean" it) juices don't have a long shelf life, and the damn tanks are shot within a week or less if your not extra careful with them. Plus side are the neat flavors which a girl got me into the gummy bear ones and that's about all I like that I've tried (besides cannabis oil).
Anyway, yes I'm trying to quit as I know I need to just have a hard time with the wanting to and it all goes out the window if I have an "off" day and I'll chain smoke and eventually dial it back after a day or two.
So yeah TL;DR I'm trying, and I won't guarantee anything, but I'll give it a shot.

I do know what you mean - like eating a veggie burger. Only makes you long for the real thing. Easier to avoid burgers all together.
Oh, and this whatnot about smoking being an appetite suppressant, its hit and miss as my roommate has smoked longer than I have and unfortunately just this past week got diagnosed being "morbidly" obese so obviously it didn't affect his appetite at all, but I've seen women who look sickly thin, and smoke a lot so it maybe that it affects females more so than males, as I am overweight and really don't eat much anyway nor has that increased any as I've slowed down my smoking.

This is exactly the analogy I was going to use but with Bacon/Turkey Bacon.
I cant understand how people could like vaping over the real thing.

Richard how do you do long distance biking and smoke? You crazy.
Yeah, it's definetly affected. I'd like to know how much better and faster I can be without the cigarettes. I've also got a few organized rides coming up and I'll tell you those fucking mountain passes will be much easier.
I'm excited about all the people here that want to kick this habit. In the next few days(Sunday at the latest) I will PM anyone that has shown or will show interest with a few ideas and thoughts I have for making this a success. The more people we can get to join us the better IMO. Just a heads up though I plan on February 1st being the start date for us, so mark your calendars gamers
I am not a smoker but I just wanted to wish you all the best of luck! I know it is difficult -- even though I don't smoke, I have been impacted by it with friends and family. My mom smoked for many years, and one day she tripped on a table and broke some ribs, and operations were more difficult than they should have been because of her smoking. She was a single mom with 4 kids at the time, and not long after that she decided she had to do something about it for herself and for us, and pretty much quit cold turkey.
To the comments about the weight gain - I know that can be a scary thing as well, but I encourage you to stay focused and try to look at the bigger picture of trying to be healthy and happy. It won't be an easy path and there will be trade-offs but I think as a lifestyle change, quitting smoking can be a very positive thing. Everyone I know who has been able to do so, has been so incredibly thankful and happy they did it. I don't know anyone personally who regrets quitting or trying to quit. I think the biggest thing is being honest with yourself and others, and having some support - just like what you're trying to do here.
Ex smoker of 20 years here. My wife and i quit 2 years ago in march. Gained 20 pounds felt like i had the flu for about a year after. Quiting smoking was brutal for us. My father just passed away from Copd because of smoking. Glad I quit, sucked ass but im never going back. Good luck.

No seriously, a few guys I know switched to vaping, then tapered their nicotine levels to nothing and then quit vaping.
Maybe it will work for you if you arent a "Cold Turkey" kind of dude.
