The player that scores the most season points in a genre is crowned the champion for that year.
Many players covet these championships. NA is home to some of the world's best players.
Last year a few of these crowns were decided by only a few points (or in one case a single point!)

Ah the playoffs... Every player at this time of year dreams it will be them that makes it this far and will become NA's newest Contest Champion!
But even reaching the playoffs is difficult and a much respected honor.
It requires submitting scores almost every week, doing battle with NES battle hardened veterans and surviving all kinds of (mostly) hilarious smacktalk.
And that's just to get there!
Once in the playoffs, players are tiered off with the years top performers in Tier 1, then Tier 2 and finally Tier 3.
There are 3 rounds that last 1 week each. Each game/genre is a mystery.
The top 3 finishers get an unique icon that only they will have on Nintendoage to commemorate their collossal feat!
PROCESS IS UNDERWAY TO CREATE THE NINTENDOAGE CONTEST HALL OF FAME THIS YEAR
The NA contests are in their 9th year. The Hall of Fame will celebrate the very best of the best.
As this is being written a secret comittee is arguing and tooling around with creating a Nintendoage Contest Hall of Fame.
Over the past 9 years some of the planets best players have competed against one another and in the process have posted memorable posts along with record breaking scores.
The contests were created with the intent of having a bunch of like minded folks who love gaming compete against each other from across the globe.
To this day, the contests have not lost that ideal - but to honor the very best of the best players, many people thought it would be fitting to honor those players that have perfomed on a world class level.
More details will be released in next weeks update, but after months of debates, 16 players currently meet the requirements to be nominated for finalists in the process.
The number of finalists for consideration as well as the final number of players to be inducted will be dicussed in the coming week.
All of the players selected to be finalists in the process will be featured next week, with those chosen to be inducted announced during the first bye week in this year's contest.
So many great players have competed here on Nintendoage.
I hope folks will have fun with the Hall of Fame and understand the people involved in creating it are taking it very, very seriously.

Gloves flexes his fingers in his first appearance in the NA Contests
Contest newcomer Gloves got a warm, trash-talk filled welcome from all in his first foray into competition.
His current score of 3,180,720 has him in first place for the time being.
Gloves' score is closely followed by dangerous veteran and Brazilian bombshell Bea_Iank. She's check in with a score of 3,052,320.
Currently in thrid place is the self proclaimed "Official NA Contest Trashtalker" and defending Shooter Champion 42 foot tapewoRm. The worm posted a score of 2,492,730 and appears to be on vacation for the remainder of the week.
The only other player to post a score north of 2 million is RC Pro-AM Master SwiftFrost. Swift is 4th with 2,318,330.
There is still more than enough time left for late posters and dirty tricks.
Can the new kid hold on?
30 players have already posted scores. That is a great start to the year!
Fans of the contest will be sure to check in throughout the day tomorrow to see if Gloves can hang on to claim an impressive gold medal in his very first showing.

BEARCAT-DOUG CALLS OUT ONE OF THE WORLD'S BEST FOR A SHOWDOWN THE WEEK OF DOUBLE DRAGON II
bearcast-doug and rdrunner are two of the planet's best NES players. Will the world get to see these 2 old timers go at it one more time?
The 2013 contests saw some of the higeest scores ever posted - by anyone - ever.
Often times during those blood soaked weeks the rest of the field saw guillavoie, rdrunner and bearcat-doug at the top of the points mountain trying to squeeze every last point they could out of their NESs.
During that season bearcast-doug and rdrunner developed a fierce rivalry.
A few days ago bearcat-doug offered a challange to rdrunner to go at it one more time.
TRASH TALKING STILL ALIVE AND WELL IN THE 2017 CONTESTS
We just started and already NA's unique brand of trash talking is pepperd throughout Super Mario Bros 3 Week
Last year's contests saw some of the most bizarre and entertaining trash talk that ever graced a competition.
We had numerous home break-ins, a car was urinated on, toys were kidnapped, cartoons were made, nameplates were aggressively vandalized, and somebody may or may not have been murdered.
This year is looking to be just as festive with SuperJimtendo getting things started off right by once again breaking into Defending Champion Richardhead's house, detaining his cat and posting another score from his rival's TV.
Contest vet gutsman004 then took one of SuperJimtendo's victory pictures and MS painted on a mario hat and mustache with the caption "I Love to smoke-a my goomba" suggesting that SuperJimtendo enjoys giving himself fellatio.
Guts has also contributed a half dozen or so mario themed insult pics that have gotten everyone's competitive juices flowing.
ToxieRules has also returned. Between posting a valid score using only a broken controller and "slappin' that base", he discovered a clue to the mysterious newcomer Moist Towlette.
Somehow, Toxie discovered on Moist Towelette's Facebook page (?) Moist had a picture of someone who looked suspiciouly like SuperJimtendo who shared that Moist Towelette is not him, but part of a bigger, devious plan.
Moist has not posted a score yet. The only thing Moist has done is flirt with another notorious trash talker...

The contestant formerly know as skinnygrinny trash talks in his sleep. He has posted fake "helpful hints" in the past during the contests as well as claiming he can no longer play the game - only to post a last second winning score.
When the worm is feeling extra evil, he transforms into his alter ego "Kobra Kai.
This is especially true when he wants to top his rival Brock Landers (a.k.a. The Prodigy).
The worm has already posted 2 pages worth of NES smack talk, VERY unhelpful hints and is already claiming he cannot play anymore this week.
If you ever trsut a tapewoRm in these contests, you will lose to a tapewoRm in these contests.
Speaking of Brock Landers, he is currently involved with a "who can post a last place qualifying score" battle with mbd39.
Both players were among the very best last year. It seems they are starting of 2017 a little more on the easy side.
And after being woke up hung over at 5 am by my kitty, who seems blissful unaware that DST has ended and breakfast time is in one hour from now, I decided to be mean and give Mario 3 another run, just to give the new kiddo more trouble to secure that 1st place.
I pretty much skipped world 7 in my last run, so I think I can fit another 200K points to my score by playing it this time.
Expect lots of whining about how bad this game is, though, since I will be playing it sober for now.
Well after I got home I gave ol' Mario 3 a shot but after all my point racking (had 594k at the boss fight) I screwed up and got shrunk on a bs bullet bill hit and then died on the first Koopa kid when I went to jump right to stomp on him,he moves left a little and turns around and shoves that wand straight up Mario's dook chute. Dead.
Pathetic....How do I over shoot him? The controls in this game are overrated. I just can't point rack in this game very well or at the very least I can't sustain it over the course of the game. It's always some stupid death here or there. No million point club for me this time around. Sucks but it is what it is.
I pray that the next time it comes up it's a low score or progression contest.
I was going to do another run last night but instead I decided too pay off my switch reservation and play marble madness. I did relatively sub par but am confident depending on the rules of the contest that I should break participation by Saturday evening

2016 was a brutally hardfought struggle. These players towered above the rest. Watch out for them again this year!
Last year, contest mods bimmy_lee and guillavoie switched to a new model.
Instead of breaking the year up into 2 seasons (Winter and Summer) - they opted to make the whole year 1 season.
For anyone who missed last season, here is a breakdown of the very best of 2016...
