NHLPA / 93 variant?

this is something thats been bugging me for awhile.can anybody help?

i've got a boxed NHLPA Hockey 93,and the cartridge is an older designed cartridge (non-slope),and just says NHLPA on the spine...i've also got a loose NHLPA 93 cart and its the newer cartrdiges (sloped bottom)...the games seem to be the exact same, both say NHLPA 93 on the title screen etc...is there any difference other than the carts themselves?perhaps a second run or something?

  • ... nothing special just your run of the mill variation for whatever reason ... odds are the '93 was eventually put on the top because the company was considering issuing a nhlpa hockey '94 and didn't want people to get confused when selecting games
  • They ended up dropping the "PA" after 93, because in 94 EA got the total licensing from the league to use stuff like New York Rangers instead of New York. *Random fact*

I think the variant is cause of a mistake. There were actually 2 games before NHLPA 93, one that took place in 92 which was called NHLPA Hockey (if I'm not mistaken)... and 91 was an olympics game. The addition of 93 to the top label was to rid of confusion between this version and the previous years.
  • thanks guys!i dont really keep variants,so i guess i'll toss the loose one out of my collection.
  • You'll notice that one also says EASN and the other EA SPORTS.
  • This game is the bane of my existance. The only store in my city that sells NES and SNES has literally 1/3 of their SNES shelf space filled up with these carts. There has to be around 80 of them. Plus, they will never get sold, because every single one of them is priced at $10 (the lowest price they sell any NES or SNES game for.)

Is it really that bad of a game?
  • ah one of my favorite games for the system... why because they are so damn cheap to buy.... also the one on the right gives you more room inside the cart for added goodies...

that cart is a LoRom Fastrom with no battery so it would work great for alot of reproductions that are 1mb in size
  • Simple rebranding from EASN to EA Sports. There is a similar variant for Madden 93.
