I did all of my DS collecting while the system was still active, so a lot of games that are rare now I bought when they came out. It's interesting to see Robot Taisen OG Saga become a desirable thing, because I bought it when it came out and the game gets really tiresome after a while. I sold it off and don't regret it.
I actually sold off a lot of my DS games, and don't miss them too much. I loved the system at the time, but I feel like a lot of the games are already starting to feel a bit dated. I have been thinking about going back to it after I finish buying the 3DS games I want, and buy some of the first party titles I passed on.
My favourite DS game was Warioware D.I.Y. It was such an amazing creativity toy box that got screwed over by bad online sharing capabilities. I made some pretty awesome microgames on that, and wrote a couple catchy tunes with the music program. Worth buying if you're the creative type, though to make the most of it you have to be a somewhat decent artist.
I also really liked the original Pokemon Ranger, Touch Detective, Ghost Trick, and the first Professor Layton. (not so big on the sequels) Kirby Canvas Curse was great too.

I gave them a good deal cuz it just wasn't being used, and I don't really collect handheld games. Hopefully it's in a good place now!

I wasn't there when the system was relevant. However our local rental store has been clearing out their DS inventory so I did manage to pick up Mario & Luigi BIS, Spirit Tracks, and Mario 64 DS.

Hey, I haven't played many of these, but I'll give you my opinion for what I have played.
Okamiden is kinda zelda-ish, or so people say, but I didn't really like it on the DS because of the stylus controls. I only played about a half hour of it before the stylus bothered me too much and I stopped playing it and returned it.
Ivy the kiwi is an amazing game on the wii, but it really sucks on the DS. The touch screen just isn't 100% receptive the way it should be. That, and your hand or stylus block part of your view of Ivy (the kiwi), which makes it really hard to see where he's going or what obstacles are coming up. You have NONE of these problems on the wii, and the wiimote works much much better, and makes for a totally different and really fun and addicting experience.
Summon Night Twin Age is nothing special. Super bland. Pass on this one if your intent is to actually play it.
Blue Dragon Awakened Shadow from what I played was meh. Not at all what I was expecting. I thought it would be more like pokemon, but it's not. Not really sure how to describe it, but you can pass on this one. I'm assumming blue dragon plus is similar.
Final Fantasy Spin offs - Now if you're talking about final fantasy fables: chocobo tales, that is a fun little game. Kinda reminds me of mario mini games mixed with a card game kinda like yugioh but not really. Definitely worth checking out. Not sure about other final fantasy DS games though.
Mega Man Starforce - Pass pass pass. They limited the amount of strategy by making the grid system 1 row by 3 columns instead of 3 rows by 3 columns like they did in the battle network series. The limited amount of movement limits what your battle chips can do. It's not a BAD game per-say, but it's not battle network, which is why I say just pass on it. Oh, and you can pass on the mega man advent games too. The only mega man DS game worth picking up is mega man 5 double team DS.
Cellphone match games - Pass on zoo keeper. Someone once told me that was a hidden gem and that was a big big big lie. Nothing special at all.
I suspect suikoden tierkreis, lunar knights, and phantasy star 0 are good games, but I haven't gotten around to them yet.
So, just throwing out a bunch of random titles that have piqued my interest at one time or another. Has anyone played, and has thoughts on, any of these:
Inserts Lots o' Games
Time Hollow -I liked the story a lot in this one, though there isn't a heck of a lot to do gameplay-wise. I'd give it a solid B.
SNK vs Capcom Card Fighters -I haven't played this one, but if you do want to play it, make sure you get the -1 revision. There was a bug in the original that made it potentially unplayable a ways into the game.
Feel the Magic -This is okay if you like Wario Ware games...weirdo mini games though.
Bomberman -I play this all the time, though mainly just the multiplayer mode.
Bomberman Land Touch 1-2 -I was hoping to like these, but didn't. The mini-games weren't very fun and the storyline was meh.
Luminous Arc -I thought this game was great. Very fun tactics game with a decent storyline.
Master of the Monster Lair -Gave it a good two hour play before I got board with it and gave up.
Touch the Dead -It was fun for a bit and then just got difficult and frustrating. Lackluster graphics too.
Devilish -I had fun with this, it's a port of the Genesis game
Rondo of Swords -It's a fun tactics style game. Unique battle system (a little like chess because each player can move differently).
My World My Way -I played it for a few hours and got bored with it. It's within the same world as Master of the Monster Lair so same graphics and same monsters.
Starfy -I liked this one a lot, though it's pretty easy. You really have to go out of your way to wind up dying. Fun marioish platformer.
Miami Law -This game is hilarious. It's text style and the majority of the game is moving from location to location, trying to figure out where the heck you're supposed to go next. It's a linear storyline, but if you like the macho-men style douchebag personas from the 80's it's an entertaining story. You constantly chose between the perspective of the guy or a female agent that is helping him.
Jake Hunter -I started to play the first one and then got sucked into another game and didn't go back. The story seemed interesting, gameplay was like Miami Law, but more serious from what I played.
Interesting, I never made that connection with Devilish somehow, despite them being pinball games with the same name... I blame the dramatically different artwork
So, just throwing out a bunch of random titles that have piqued my interest at one time or another. Has anyone played, and has thoughts on, any of these:
Desktop Tower Defense
I played this on Flash (still out there and free I believe) and it was a solid Tower Defense game. Worth a play, nothing particularly noteworthy but addictive and nothing bad either. I'd rather play the free browser version than the DS port though, same experience at no cost.
Apparently Deadly Silence is actually a port/remake of the original Resident Evil. I may have to get it just because I never did finish a playthrough of that guy
So, just throwing out a bunch of random titles that have piqued my interest at one time or another. Has anyone played, and has thoughts on, any of these:
Suikoden Tierkreis
The Mana games
The Final Fantasy spin-offs
Suikoden: I tried to play this one, but the voice acting was terrible. I had heard that the Japanese version had an option for English text, but with the voices all in Japanese so I bought it in order to not have to hear/understand what the characters were saying. Nope. At least I cannot figure out how to get the English text to display, if it is even there. Anyways, I hear that there in an undubbed version floating around, so eventually I will try that out (same with Sands of Destruction). If you do not like listening to mice in a tin can, I'd say go undubbed. It is supposed to be a very good game other than that.
Children of Mana: This game is pretty enjoyable at first, and very pretty, but it does get repetitive. Plus, there is no real story. I was a big fan of Final Fantasy Adventure and Secret of Mana, and was understandably pretty let down by this game. They hit a high point with the series early on and have never quite gotten back to it.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates: A very enjoyable action-adventure game. There are plenty of opportunities to break the exploration aspect of the game too, going where you're not supposed to go by jumping around. That part reminded me a lot of playing Legacy of the Wizard, and provided a lot of fun. It is also two player with local wireless. The only DS game that I have ever played that way, which was rather fun.
Final Fantasy the 4 Heroes of Light: I have very little recollection of playing this game, but I did put a ton of time into it. It must have been good? I'm looking forward to giving it another go.
I have yet to try FFXII Revenant Wings or Heroes of Mana, but I'm guessing that the touch controls will put me off.
Playing Devilish now. That game goes from a joke to frustrating as shit when you step into world 4. And the controls are so poor, and the gameplay so wonky... Still, I'm ejoying it. The game is just so bizarre, and harmless with its frustration (levels are at most 4 minutes long)
Just ordered the revision of Card Fighters too
Miami Law is next on my radar edit: Screw it, its $9 new on amazon so I'll grab that too
Handheld gaming is going to be my only option for awhile soon enough, may as well stock up

Devilish is pretty fun! Haven't played it too much but i always liked Arkanoid/Breakout style games so i thought it was a cool twist on those. Let me know how Miami Law is. I've seen it a few times but never played.
Good call on Zombie BBQ too. Just finished that the other day and enjoyed it. Mostly the boss fights; that game would of been better off as a boss rush
- Hidden gem. I usually don't like visual novels too much, but time travel makes this one interesting.
Metroid Pinball
- Not bad at all.
Trace Memory
- Early DS release but has some great puzzles and has a lot of inventive use of all of the DS's features. Great presentation. I've played through it twice.
SNK vs Capcom Card Fighters
- Great card battler, which is one of my favorite genres, so I'm biased. I do have the revision and I'm glad you picked it up because the glitch prevents you from finishing the game.
Okamiden
- I couldn't get into this, but then again I still haven't played very far in Okami, either. It did look impressive on the DS screen anyway.
Broken Sword
- A pretty boring point-and-click. I understand this was a bleeding edge adventure game at one point, but I don't know if it's aged very well. I kept getting lost and not knowing what to do without a FAQ.
Deep Labyrinth
- It's been years since I played this, but I really enjoyed it. When I heard Yasunori Mitsuda did the soundtrack, I knew I had to have it day 1. Overall it was not his best work, and I admit the game could've been better, but it's a maze-crawler with delightfully weird moments, and it effectively did sweep me away to a magical world. Still, don't expect a lot of depth here despite the title.
Diddy Kong Racing
- Excellent racer. It's the N64 game, basically. If you've never played that, what really ties the game together is the ability to explore an overworld between races.
Feel the Magic
- Another very early DS release, and insanely fun. It's a quirky Japanese game about picking up women with minigames ... sorta. The sequel, Rub Rabbits, is quite hard to find.
Dungeon Explorer
- I've posted about Dungeon Explorer: Warrior of the Ancient Arts here before. It's my favorite Diablo clone on the DS.
Sonic Dark Brotherhood
- Absolutely terrible, and that's coming from a big fan of RPGs and BioWare. I'm sad I played this. Would say it's the worst RPG I've ever played, but I've been playing the Famicom back-catalog lately.
Ivy the Kiwi
- I never enjoyed the Ivy games and don't understand their appeal.
Luminous Arc
- Your typical anime plot sRPG. It doesn't do a whole lot to stand above the countless others.
Master of the Monster Lair
- A cheap pickup, so worth it. But it's not particularly fun. A slow-paced trap/build/dungeon crawl kind of game.
Phantasy Star 0
- Was surprised at how excellent this was! Creating characters and playing with them was satisfying.
Touch the Dead
- Any lightgun game where you touch the screen on the DS is pretty good IMO, and this is no exception.
Summon Night
- Summon Night: Twin Age is one of my favorite DS games. Some people go out of their way to really hate on this one, and I can't figure out why.
Suikoden Tierkreis
- Some people feel this is the worst Suikoden game. The voice acting is a bit cheesy, but it's very plot driven and I found it to be a satisfying play. I never beat it though.
Devilish
- MUCH better on the Genesis. It's so smooth playing on there and so metal. Great game!!!
Rondo of Swords
- Overrated. Another sRPG. I'd say this is not as good as Luminous Arc.
Witche's Tale
- Cool cover art, but just an average RPG. It's pretty cutesy, yet goth, if you're into that. It feels cheap, like a budget title.
Witches' Wish
- Haven't played much of this yet, but it feels considerably higher quality than A Witch's Tale. Obviously this one's cutesy too. Graphics remind me of the Rune Factory series.
My World My Way
- Underrated. The game mechanic to change the rules because you're a brat is fun. I admit after about 6 hours, the gimmick started getting old and I set this one aside. But sometimes I think about playing more of it.
Starfy
- Way overrated. I can't stand any of the Starfy games. People keep trying to drudge this series up from the dead as some sort of hidden gem platformer, but no.
Touch Detective
- The first game is a pretty fun interactive mystery. The sequel is not as good as the original, so stick with part 1 if you decide to play this.
Blue Dragon games
- From what I understand, one is good and one is not so good. I haven't had the priviledge either way.
Rub Rabbits
- If you enjoyed Feel the Magic, definitely pick this up. Hell, pick it up even if you didn't. I can't seem to find this game.
The Mana games
- Both Mana games are totally different. Children of Mana was the first game, I believe. I was disappointed by CoM - It's far too repetitive and I distinctly remember facing a particular boss for the fourth time or something and dejectedly turned the system off out of boredom. I've heard mixed things about Heroes of Mana. Some people say it's much better than CoM, but I haven't played it yet.
Jake Hunter
- Surprisingly polished and interactive mystery game. I quite enjoyed it and it was a memorable experience. Later learned that this was the first US entry in a long-running series that started on the Famicom.
Cool, one thing I love doing with 3DS/DS is playing ports of older games that I always wanted to experience but know I probably won't get around to, so Diddy Kong will get bumped up the list
And now you have me super curious about Sonic Dark Brotherhood. Call it morbid fascination
Great list with descriptions cerellio! I didn't know Rub Rabbits was difficult to come by, I picked it up on a whim a few weeks ago at EB Games on clearance for $3.99, I haven't even fired the cart up yet. Sounds like I should give it a fair shake though.
Clearance at EB Games got me to start collecting for the DS again. So many quality games to be had and still at a good price. Some on my want list are surprisingly tough to come by though.

PM'ed ya!
I did all of my DS collecting while the system was still active, so a lot of games that are rare now I bought when they came out. It's interesting to see Robot Taisen OG Saga become a desirable thing, because I bought it when it came out and the game gets really tiresome after a while. I sold it off and don't regret it.

Yea that's true. Not really sure what exactly advance wars' closest clone would be.

Desktop Tower Defense
I played this on Flash (still out there and free I believe) and it was a solid Tower Defense game. Worth a play, nothing particularly noteworthy but addictive and nothing bad either. I'd rather play the free browser version than the DS port though, same experience at no cost.

And now you have me super curious about Sonic Dark Brotherhood. Call it morbid fascination
Clearance at EB Games got me to start collecting for the DS again. So many quality games to be had and still at a good price. Some on my want list are surprisingly tough to come by though.
