What in the samhill is a Nex Gen?

We had one come in the shop today. We looked for 20 minuets trying to find something on it. It came with one of the controllers and a grey NES zapper. Hy husband gave him 10 for all of it.

I brought it home to use and it plays fine. I just would like to know some history or maybe value on these things. That, and is it even worth swapping out with my top loader for the regular playing here at the house.

  • I have heard reviews that some enjoy playing on the gen Nex's due to better video quality. However, being the old school guy I am, I prefer the actual hardware that Nintendo made. Most will tell you this. That and the resale on those things is hopelessly low.
  • I love my Gen Nex!!! You really need to get the wireless arcade sticks, they rock. It may be a bit harder to get now, though. I went to their website and you use to be able to order anything straight from them but now when you click "8-bit" tab it says you have to have a wholeseller's account to view that section.
  • NEX was good plastics design but below average compatibility (especially audio) for its time. Both have been passed since then in clones like the Retro Duo. You should get better video quality just by using composite instead of RF, but could do the same with a front loader or better clone instead.

First thing I did when I got my NEX was take it apart, picts of the inside at http://www.retrousb.com/NEX/NEX.html There are still chips inside that nobody knows what they are for... The NOAC has expanded audio and video but no docs are available. The Messiah owners certainly weren't hardware guys and hired some chinese peeps to do the design.
  • Thanks guys. We played on it last night (I suck at pinball) and it seemed to do ok. We are thinking of putting it in our daughters room, less to worry about LOL. I have to adree with the few that perfer the actual hardware. It was nice but wasn't the same.

From looking at the pics, docs on the expanded functions *are* available!

If the text silk-screened on the PCB near the NOAC blob is VT03, the NOAC is almost certainly a V. R. Technology VT03, docs for which are available... see http://nesdev.parodius.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=5222
