Well there's a relief! Ordered one from Gamestop. I figured they didnt know what the availability of stock would be, and that's why it hasn't been up anywhere, probably the case.
Amazon is totally useless in their "we'll email you when it's available" Yeah, the hell you say! And Nintendo, as usual, makes a few copies available because they like the publicity. They really are assholes in many ways. Take for example Zelda Breath of the Wild Master Sword Edition -PLENTY of copies in Europe, and very few in the USA. If anyone manages to snag a second copy and wants to sell it, please let me know, as usual I'm tired of this BS...

Perhaps in person, which is fine if you have a GameStop nearby -although frankly GS sucks so bad, I question whether it's really worth the effort. And certainly online they are useless. Heck, if you ordered the Special Edition online, they would probably just send you the regular edition, since they suck and don't care (my personal experience with them).

The way the fire emblem Fates preorder worked at GameStop was as follows: they kept in store preorders open for 3 days. After these three days they didn't take anymore. They send the number off to Nintendo and all orders are fulfilled. Nintendo doesn't just say here are 20K copies have fun. It's all based on the demand during those 3 days. I have no clue how the online preorders work though. I think the online supply is actually limited to a specific number ahead of time.
I've only had bad luck with best buy for preorders. They are terrible. Canceled my majoras mask special edition 3ds system darn you! They are not good at restocking stuff either whether it be online or in the store.
You have nothing to lose by trying to preorder one in person. Worst case scenario they don't fulfill it or they send you the standard game. In both scenarios you can get your money back. You wouldn't get the game, but at least there's a shot you get the special edition if you preorder it. Also, if you buy it from someone here, who's to say they didn't buy it from GameStop? You could still be supporting GameStop even if you buy it from someone here.

Again, I miss it... of course it wouldn't be a problem if Nintendo ever released decent quantities of LE games, but instead they don't care.
Well anyway, I definitely wouldn't call Fates "garbage" by any stretch of the imagination. It's certainly NOT as good as Awakening, although I've only playd Birthright which is still most certainly worth playing if you enjoy Fire Emblem and/or SRPGs. Also, Fates is a bit strange, because it's meant to be played as a whole, all three games together, and I've heard Conquest is substantially better than Birthright. Not sure I would recommend playing Birthright on the hardest difficulty (which is what I'm doing) -they really made it quite insane. Also, the theme song "Lost in Thoughts" is fab

As for my feelings about Fates - the localization was butchered, and Corrin (no matter which gender you want to play him as), is a really mary-sue feeling protagonist, and has one of the most absolutely awful designs I've ever seen. I'm completely ok with there being an "avatar" unit, but I would prefer it not be the central character. There were a lot of questionable decisions about Fates, IMO, and that turned me far, far away from it.

I don't know too much about the localization vs original Japanese. I will say that I don't feel the NA version should be 100% authentic to the Japanese -I think it's good that they relate things more to Western players. If you really feel it should be, you can always get the Japanese version, but from what I read it sounds like the North American release did a great job. As for the protagonist, I agree he's not the most interesting character. However, in awakening Crom also had this Mary-Sue complex, just like pretty much all protagonists in all the Fire Emblems. Any way you look at it, the FE story always has some protagonist that undergoes something horrible and then fights for rightousness, yadda yadda... Overall, I would say that Birthright is not as good as Awakening, which was my second-favorite FE game. My favorite being Path of Radiance for the GameCube. I do look forward to playing Conquest, which again, I've heard is quite superior to Birthright.

If they don't put it back up at BB no SE for me I'm afraid. What a joke.

Fates was not garbage. I have only played through conquest but man was that rewarding when I finally beat it. I played it on hard mode and it took me several months to beat. Definitely the hardest fire emblem game I've ever played. None of the fire emblem games are bad imo. They might be different but none of them are bad.
According to Nintendo's website, WalMart is one of the US retailers that carries the special edition, so for everyone who hasn't managed to snag it, maybe keep an eye on Walmart's website, or stop by the electronics section and ask while you're shopping?
