If you didn't catch the Dain 42, then you definitely missed the AllYourBase 42 an hour earlier...  image

whoops. Didn't catch the AYB 42.

for reals: to be an enthusiast, or collector, one must invest time into pursuing the objects, money (unless yr collecting pine cones) and get some satisfaction from the thing(s) collected (and enjoy the chase).

also. you need 42. there, i said it.

I disagree. I collect like crazy, but I still hope to play each game I get.

Collecting is what you make it.

  • I think you're instantly turned into a collector the first time you get that adrenaline rush from finding a rare game for cheap... (You all know that rush; your hands are slightly shaking as you get to the cash register; you feel almost like you are stealing) then you get hooked on it!

Which brings me to my next point: collecting video games isn't a hobby, it's an addiction.
  • I think there are 3 basic groups. A gamer a collector and an investor.

A gamer usually doesn't spend much and buys what he likes to play. He may not consider himself a collector.

A collector doesn't spend as much time playing the games as he does finding them.

An investor is someone who only buys with thoughts of reselling either short term or long term.

Some people will do all 3 but if you had to pick one title that best describes you it would be the one you spend the most time doing. I used to be a gamer then I wanted them all and became a collector. I hit that spot where you have pretty much all you want and got bored. There is very little I don't have that I want these days so when I do buy is it as an investor. I've been playing a lot of 360 over the past couple of years so perhaps I'm getting ready to start the cycle all over.
  • That's a good description of it, AllYourBase2.

For me, quantity doesn't matter at all. Having 150 copies of Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt does not make you a collector.
  • ^Or if you're a Super Mario fan, maybe it does! Maybe you have a SMB/DH cart mural on your wall in the basement.

For me, I don't have a huge cart collection, either. Probably 150 carts and about 100 boxes/manuals. While I'd like a nice large collection some day, for me it's about the pursuit. Finding rare things and adding them to my collection is what I enjoy (and it isn't always CIB's, either). There is no magic number; you're a collector the day you decide you want to hang on to something "just because". You may or may not want to play it, but if you have no imminent, practical need for it, then you're collecting it.

The bulk of gamers are not collectors. This is how Gamestop has turned into a multi-million dollar chain: most people sell off their games when they're done with them.

And definitely missed the '37 in a row' before that!
  • You could be considered a collector if your mom spends a large part of her vacation time checking out flea markets, garage sales and thrift shops trying to find stuff you may add to your crazy...addicting collection:-)
  • Hmmm, interesting question. I don't know, I'd say if you have anything over perhaps 10 games you could be considered this. It depends not really on numbers to me but how you accumulate your games and what you're looking for. If you just casually play a few good ones, but don't really have an interest in a complete black-box 10-Yard Fight, I wouldn't call you a collector, but you could have 100s of games and still not really be a collector. When you start researching, learning about it, caring about the history, and spending money on things that usually make you feel bad about yourself after you do it, then you're a collector.
  • You know for a fact that you're a collector if you've ever helped out someone who was just getting started with a collection.
