Using a PAL nes in the US

I recently purchased a PAL NES (spanish version) and I was wondering if anyone here could give me some guidance on what sort of power supply is required to use it in the USA.

The adapter it came with expects a 220V input, but of course all I have to offer it is 120V.

The output is the same as the US adapter (AC9V, 1.3A) but the US adapter's plug that goes into the NES is slightly larger than the Spanish version. I feel pretty sure it would work if only the plug was the right size, although admittedly I have no experience whatsoever with foreign appliances.

If I chop the plug off of the PAL adapter and wire it onto a US adapter, do you think this would do it or is that just crazy talk?

  • OK, since the PAL adapter is useless to me anyway because I don't have a 220V power source I just went ahead and cut off it's plug and swapped it onto a spare US AC adapter that wasn't  being used. Figured I would post the result here just in case anyone from the future has a similar question...

Cutting the plug off of the PAL adapter and switching it onto the end of a US adapter worked out great!

Important to note, though; within the cable there are two wires... one shielded and one not. You have to connect the shielded wire to the non-shielded one and vise-versa. I initially tried connecting shielded to shielded because it seemed to make sense, but that didn't work.

Luckily, it didn't seem to do any damage to the system when I tested it initially with the backward wiring... it only made me nervous for a moment that I had ruined my adapters for no good reason and perhaps the system. But no, ultimately the surgery was successful!

  • I am using an usual 220V adapter from a PAL system for my NTSC toaster as the output and plug are the same for both systems.
