Warhammer 40K

I just started playing 40k and I am loving it! I was curious if anyone else on NA plays? My Ork boyz are always ready for a discussion.

Happy new editon day!!!

Now is the time to try it out.  Model prices are low on Ebay and the newest edition is going to be free (supposed to come out in June).
  • How time intensive is it? Can you give me a brief synopsis of what it is and how you play it?

Really it can be as much time as you want.

If you start with models New in box you are looking at time to put them together and paint them.

Buying off ebay is what I do and then paint them how I want them (if you plan on playing competitive instead of just with friends you need to build them to select weapons)

A game can take from 20 mins to several hours or days depending on the scale of the game you want to play.

We created a small gametype where we each choose one squad and it's last man standing (takes about 20 min) but we have played 6000 pts games that have taken 8+ hours.

In a sense its like D and D. You can do whatever you want as long as everyone agrees.

If you are interested in it I suggest watching a few of the miniwargaming videos on youtube.

  • I have always been curious about it, i will check it out.
  • Its a cool hobby, but fuck is it expensive

That it is, I just keep finding people that are quitting and scooping up their models.
  • I played in middle school. I have the original rogue trader book and space marines in pristine condition. I think it might be worth something now.
  • Does anybody REALLY get around to playing 40k?

Or is it more just an "aspirational" purchase where 99% of your time goes into army building and painting and MAYBE you play the game once or twice in the end

I've had a couple of the core-game boxed sets over the years...

I've probably had $400 worth of minis and equipment flow through my collection over the years...

I think I've played a grand total of TWO games

(though at least I turned a profit on the minis, since quite a few of my metal minis were acquired through trades when i was scratch building terrain)

Got a lot more gaming mileage out of the Space Hulk re-release.
  • I've only been playing like six months now and we play twice a month. We keep it fresh by trying out new objectives and games. If ya want to play make the drive lol.
  • Today is the launch!
  • Yeah, it's pretty exciting. I started playing last year so it's a pain to have to re-learn the rules again.
  • Luckily it will be a lot easier to learn

I only played WH Fantasy with my one other friend who was into it and at GamesDay, so just a few times a year. Now that it no longer a thing I don't feel like reinvesting in any GW products, but I still enjoy painting Reaper and Kingdom Death minis for fun.
  • Funny story. In high school one of the nerds had a metal briefcase with his army in it. When he went to the bathroom, one of the stoned kids that sat at the back of the class opened it up and started playing with the figures. Needless to say the nerd got super pissed off, and a fight almost ensued. It was comedy gold watching a kid stoned as fuck playing with them like army men. It was equally funny seeing the nerd try to explain to the teacher why he was so mad.

I really should go full nerd mode and get into this game, I want to build a little terrain for battle.

That's awesome. If you ever get the itch to sell it, let me know. I've been hunting for a few months. Just haven't found the right condition/price yet.
