Gamestop/Paypal frustration

Sunday night I decided "Fuck it! I'm buying a WiiU!" priced out my various options and decided to go with a Zelda BotW bundle from Gamestop online. Ended up Being a $400 order after shipping, taxes, and a copy of Tokyo Mirage. I have a Visa giftcard with $50 from christmas, so when I checked out through PayPal I set that up as my card expecting a screen at somepoint to ask me for a secondary payment option. That never happened. So now I have a $400 payment pending through paypal for a card that doesn't have that much money on it, and Gamestop has the order listed as "processing". Neither Gamestop nor Paypal seem to be stopping the order and I can't find an option to cancel it from either end. ARGGH!

And Toad Trackers arrived today from Amazon which I ordered at the same time. But I can't play it.

  • I tried to check out on ebay the other day. Had a Paypal balance that wouldn't have fully-covered the purchase. It wouldn't let me partially pay with that balance, seemed to be all-or-nothing on a single payment method. I wonder if something's changed with Paypal?
  • On the flip side, maybe you luck out and get a WiiU plus game for $50.
  • Ha, Gamestop won't even let me look at the Paypal option. Website always says "Paypal is unavailable"... always, always and always.... and doesn't give me a reason why.

Yeah it's really frustating that I have these giftcards that I can't use anywhere online because no one seems to support split payments anymore.

  • Did you have other forms of payment in place before? Mine always did it automatically I thought. I never really paid much attention to it. Have you checked your bank or credit cards to see of the other 350 came off there?

Yeah, I think Paypal will charge your default payment method if there is an issue with another. Not 100% sure though.

One of my relatives used to get me the visa prepay cards for my birthdays but I asked to just receive cash instead. As others have mentioned, its difficult to split payment online and plus you get charged a ton of fees when you buy the card originally, so why even bother at that point?

Yeah PayPal is normally tied directly to my checking account. And no the payment has not hit my bank account.

  • Gamestop's website is kind of terrible. I can log in one day and have the option to cancel an order, then it will disappear for a week. Not sure what they are doing but I have to go into a store to get anything done now.
  • Never ordered from there before so I don't have much to say on it but I hope everything works out DarDar.
  • You can't use gift cards of any sort in combination with PayPal, the gamestop site doesn't allow it.

I tried it trying to buy Legend of Heroes Lionheart edition. It wouldn't allow it.
  • An easy solution / workaround that I use for this is whenever I have a disposable cash card, like a Visa gift card, I donate the money via PayPal to myself. Just set up a donation option like you would to add to a website, and then donate yourself. You can dump the entire amount of the card directly into your PayPal funds that way.

Now there's an idea I'll keep in mind for the future. Thanks!

  • Have you tried to call Gamestop and/or Paypal? Sounds like something I'd think they can straighten out pretty quick. Best of luck, you'll love the Toad Tracker game   (and of course, BOTW is amazing)
  • PayPal has seemingly random restrictions that have caused me pain in the past, too.

    >.<

Good luck getting this straightened out! You'll have to let me know what you think of Tokyo Mirage Sessions.
  • I think you can tie any credit/debit card to your Paypal and switch the primary and secondary payment methods accordingly. Set the giftcard as primary, and when the funds are expelled from the card, the remaining difference will be taken out of the secondary payment.

However, not sure if this'd work for giftcards, but it's worth a shot.
  • I stopped trying to buy stuff online from GameStop months ago. Every time I would go to check out it wouldn't let me. I tried PayPal and my credit card several times, logged in and out, emailed them, nothing. Don't know what the deal is but they're losing money.

Yep. I do it all the time. It's also a great way to consolidate multiple disposable cash cards into a single funding source. I get a lot of weird Visa gift cards as rebates (because I actually waste the time to fill out all those fine-print rebate forms). $5 here, $10 there, $15, etc. Every once in a while I’ll just go through them all and donate the balances to myself via PayPal.

    Great idea!

I think once the process starts between Paypal and whatever financial link you have to your PayPal account, a cancellation can't come until afterward in the form of a return/refund from either your financial institution or credit card company. In this case if Daria said that there wasn't enough money on the card the order was placed on, the order simply won't process and it will cancel itself upon being "declined".

  • They won't cancel it, your order will just sit in limbo forever.

You probably need to call the customer service number to get something rolling.

I called an canceled today. They didn't want to help me since my husband's name is on the Paypal account.

Seriously I hate companies that try to delay cancelations in the "sake of your security". Like you let me spend the money, how eaxctly are you keeping my account safe?

But they were able to get ahold of him at work and nix the order. Not that it was doing anything anyway. I still had the money and they still had their games/system.

I was going to just reorder through the website but then I realized SAVER wasn't good on consoles, and the bundle wasn't available in stores (even though it was the only wiiU bundle not marked online only) and it would have cost me $5 more just the drive to a GameStop and have the system today.

In the end I said fuck Gamestop all together and bought a refubished unit directly from Nintendo for $200 instead. Even after I buy BotW and Tokyo Mirrage seperately it will still be a significant savings.

Yes the good ending episode. The opening to this anime sucks because Gamestop.

Joking aside good thing that you got your order cancelled and that I'll never consider ordering anything from GS.

  • Gamestop's customer service sucks, in person and on the website.

    1) Often I can't complete my order and get a generic error message with a phone number to call. Twice I've actually taken the time to call, and tried explaining the names of games to people who barely speak English. Both times they didn't give me my 10% rewards discount.

    2) Gamestop individual stores are able to refuse a return any online purchase (what a terrible way to run a franchise). All the ones around me do because they don't need an extra game to sell. The other option is to mail the game(s) back to Gamestop with a shipping label that they will apparently pay for. I could not get them to actually email this label to me, so I paid for shipping myself. I've done this twice and both times it took many months for me to receive a refund. The second time I had to open a claim with my credit card before the money was refunded.

    3) If you want to contact Gamestop about a return, you need to send them a message through their website. There is no record of the message being sent and I have never received a response. When I filed a claim to get a refund with my credit card, I took screenshots of the multiple messages I sent into the black hole (luckily I never needed them).

    4) Gamestop's website is completely down far too often.

    5) The manager of the Gamestop near me treats everyone condescendingly and wants to make it clear how much he knows about video games to everyone. Usually I would just shrug this off, but it makes the line for the cash register take forever as I wait for him to talk to everyone about the games they're buying.

    6) Here's a minor but funny one. I saw a sweepstakes on Gamestop's website a few days ago, and of course they try to hide the free / no consideration method of entry like most companies. I went to the official rules and found their legal team's notes still highlighted and not addressed. Ridiculous for such a large publicly traded company.

A pending Paypal authorization for an order is suppose to automatically cancel after 29 days.
