Game Boy Advance Titles Worth My Time

Title says it all. Finally decided to pull the trigger on a Super Retro Advance and managed to score a copy of Mother 3 as my first GBA game. Thanks gaz523!

The question is where should I go from here? What are the must haves for the system? Are reproductions that rampant?

Any advice is appreciated

  • So many good games on the gba and yes if you are going cart only you will probably run into repros more than half of the time. Advance Wars is a great series. Golden Sun is great, as well as your usual Nintendo stuff.
  • Yes. Reproductions are That rampant.
    I recommend:
    Pokémon R/S/E
    Pokémon FR/LG
    Mario Advance series
    Link to the Past
    Metroid Fusion/Zero Mission
    Advance Wars
    Castlevania series
    NES Classic Series

There's a lot of great ports of older games
  • Don't forget Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga!

Awesome! Thanks for the heads up, will definitely have to do some research and pay extra attention when buying carts. Favorite game in the Advance Wars series?

If you're into RPGs, you may like them. They're VERY light on story, but it's more about building an awesome team of little monters, watching them grow, and learning the battle system so you can rek everyone. Or you can play it like a collectathon and find all the monsters. Or both!

Count me in if you can still make it "rain" in the strip club in the Advance version of Duke.

Oh yeah! And they eventually learn abilities that help them team up to get around the over world AND they can use them in battle! It's really great!

I'm not sure if that's in the game or not as I haven't played that in like a year now, but I remember it to very good!

I really didn't like R/S/E, but I know people who do. If you've never played, it would certainly be interesting to hear your experience. FR/LG are more advanced   remakesofthe original Red and Blue, whichI enjoyed a lotmore, thoughI admittedly playedthose first.

did you play red or blue when they were new? That would explain why you like them more. Actually I think RSE are some of the less popular titles in the series. I really like them though

  • Sapphire was the first game I bought with my GBA SP, it's a great game. The map and layout of RSE is a bit different than the first 2 gens, but overall great games. Of course there has yet to be a truly bad Pokemon main series game, so i'm a bit bias towards it.

Make sure to get Minish Cap too. I don't get why that game doesn't get talked about more, it's a god damn Zelda game made by Capcom.

Yeah the Minish Cap is great. Probably doesn't get talked about too much because it didn't come out to North America until after the DS so a lot of people probably didn't play it.

Yeah, but only barely. Played Red, Gold, Ruby, Fire Red, Diamond, and Heart Gold in pretty rapid succession about five years ago. First time fully through all of them. Ruby was far and away my least favorite--wasn't even close.

On where you should start? Do you mean which game? I'm definitely biased towards FR/LG over R/S/E, but I'm sure any of them will be solid starting points.

emerald has more content than Ruby/sapphire, fire red and leaf green are basically the same. So I say pick up emerald and one of the other two. You don't need ALL of them per se

I still need to play that. That's why I didn't recommend it at least
  • I learned the hard way that repros are indeed super common for the GBA, and for titles you would think wouldn't be worth reproducing.

If you're collecting GBA to play, congrats, it's the best library since the SNES, owing to the fact that it has a ton of SNES games ported to it. Mega Man and Bass comes to mind, as well as R-Type 3, though I warn you, with that one, while it's ten times cheaper than its SNES counterpart, the music is a dumpster fire. Despite what seems to be a few suggestions, I actually don't recommend Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald. I lived the entire GBA lifespan without playing them and I don't regret it now that I have - they were really subpar for Pokemon games.

    I suggest:

All of the Mega Man Battle Networks. You can skip 4 and 5 if you want, because they're subpar, and Battle Chip Challenge is nothing like the rest of the series.

Drill Dozer (seems to be increasing in price lately)

    Boktai 1-2 (also going up)

    Gradius Galaxies

    Sonic Advance 1-3

Everything else I would say has been mentioned. Stay away from Mario Kart Super Circuit if you enjoy Mario Kart, it's worse than the SNES version.
  • Kuru Kuru Kururin has always been a favorite of mine for GBA. It's a fun game and unique!

I also enuoyed Castlevania - Aria of Sorrow, Circle of the Moon, and Harmony of Dissonance. [I enjoyed all 3 but my favorite was probably Aria of Sorrow]
