Not looking for advice, just general discussion.  I've been batting around the idea of trading away all my cart only NES and N64 games for SNES cart only games and only collect that.



My question is how many times / how often have you changed up your collection?

    Do whatever makes you happy man. Whatever works for your setup and you have fun doing. That is the only advice I can give!

    I am a fickle fool. I change what I'm collecting fairly regularly. That said, I think I've found the spot I like - collecting CIB games from a hand-picked list of games that I simply want to own.



    When I was going for a complete NES set I was kidding myself - I don't have the cash to pick up the crazier titles, specifically Stadium Events, and anything else over $1k.



    I considered a complete N64 cart-only set, and it may yet happen if I come across some awesome lot of games or something, but realistically I think that the curated list of awesome games is better for me than just "everything"; I'll simply never play Madden or NHL or whatever else sports games.



    I like to play my games so now, like I said, I'm picking up CIB for NES and SNES, and cart-only for N64 (mostly just cuz I don't have any CIB N64 games). I won't pick up sealed games because then I'll never play them, and to me that's a waste.

    I started off thinking I wanted lots of licensed NES games. Then I realized that was too expensive, and found out about flash carts. So that phase only lasted a few months.



    Then I found out about homebrews, and those are super neat. So I was buying lots of em. That was a couple years. Recently, I've gotten everything I wanted, so I'm just buying the occasional game that looks real good.



    The only thing I'm actively searching for right now is copies of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer for the DS. Started collecting those for something to do. That will last as long as I can continue to find them cheap.

    Zero. I think theres a lot of 'keeping up with the Jones', some OCD and people that just feel the need to spend on things just to have them. I only focused on NES stuff I liked and wanted, then crept into Game Boy. I never ever thought about buying for other systems that I didnt care too much about. Im not even nostalgic for Game Boy, never even played one until 2 years ago, but its relatively cheap, games dont take up a lot of space and portable. That was enough for me! Space is key. A friend of mine has a ton of stuff, and even setting up a different console (has an NES, SNES, Genesis/CD/32x, n64, Saturn, Dreamcast, Playstation, 360, Sega Master System) is a huge pain in the ass.

    I collect only NES stuff and I don't even care about little Samson and all those other 90's sequels games. I don't mind paying the money if it's something I want and I also have considered starting to collect Genesis stuff. I think the only expensive games I want are power blade 2 and bonks adventure.

    I have shifted away from loose to CIB. I'm in a situation where I like hunting for I/B, or buying a CIB to trade away my extra cart. I've been buying a sealed game here and there for a handful of years as well.

    never changed the goal i began with....



    from the start my goal has been collecting a complete PAL NES set (loose only)

    as extra, i only buy CIB/NIB NES games when it's a game i really want or have nostalgia for.

    with GB , i only buy loose games that i really want to play....

    same for SNES, except that i never owned an SNES when i was younger, so the nostalgia factor is 0%

    I did exactly this. I had a bunch of different games for different consoles. Top tier stuff. Then I realized that I was really only playing my SNES. So I traded and sold the other stuff away and kept my SNES stuff. Still working on a complete cart-only SNES set. No regrets.

    Ya that's what Im wrestling with.  I have Samson and some top tier stuff for other systems but don't have any attachment to the games, only classics for those systems that i would probably keep.

    I changed gears slightly a few times but only sold part of my collection to change gears once. I didn't sell off on a whim though. I gave myself a couple months to be sure I wasn't going to regret it and I have not regretted it yet.

    I'm sticking to my guns on the NES and I still have a long way to go. But I want to play the games I buy, not throw them on a shelf and watch them collect dust. I'm a loose cart guy I guess...

    I think there's way too many damn games to try and collect everything. If you focused on just one system, you could probably get a full set, which is much more of an obtainable goal, opposed to trying to collect everything ever made.

    I used to think I would collect for any and every system I came across. Then I decided that was ridiculous and sold/traded all the systems I didn't have nostalgia for to focus on just a small handful that were significant for me. Now I just rotate between them for whatever I'm in the mood to collect for.

    It happens, I started off with NES carts, then before long I was collecting everything cart based, then thinned it down and focused on nes which went from cart to cib, eventually I just killed off everything and kept my favorites and really hadn't changed from there so I have a mix of everything but severely thinned down. It's honestly too expensive to step back into the frey now personally. Even though I still collect famicom but my ps3/4 games outnumber my "retro" as most of them are "show pieces" as I just hit the everdrive when I play anything.

    Get any games im interested in.



    It might be the full licensed NES set.

    Might be loose tg16 hu- cards

    Possibly sealed SNES games



    Just whatever I am into at the time

    After ~6 years of collecting cart only I decided to go for CIB. Sold a lot of good stuff to get cardboard, like demons crest and Kickmaster. Wish I kept Kickmaster  

    Atari I collect loose, everything else cib. NES I plan

    my first "goal" was nes licensed loose. havent changed, nintendo stuff is so overpriced right now. i cant afford any of it. im an idiot but changing my "goal" would be completely senseless on my part.



    495 loose carts and its slowed to a lazy snails pace. plus i dont like to spend $ on..... anything.

    Agreed! I still need to snag up Kickmaster sometime though just for shits and giggles to dominate it for old times sake.

    Shatterhand is definitely one of the best. Power blade, Kickmaster and whomp Em are a step down

    To the OP.... my collecting "goal" has always been to find/play great games so that will never change. For me, it's never been about collecting a full set of this, or NEEDING that system. I just want to play great games so that's what I look for.

    I've always been a huge nintendo and RPG fan in general. I just started collecting and I am just trying to get games that I have sentimental attachment to (which is down to 3), rpg's I haven't played (they're are quite a few), and nintendo stuff in general. I also collect comics, you think video games are expensive, and toys from my youth ( the real ghostbusters tmnt). Also pop vinyls but I am really running out of room for stuff so we will see what happens, I get on collecting kicks and will switch back and forth and sometimes I'll get caught in a tight spot, I just bought a cib $100 video game and then see a $300 comic I want, should I put it n on my credit card? It's tough juggling multiple collecting hobbies.

    And now I'm starting to buy homebrew games thanks to you guys and gals, thanks alot people, I didn't even know what homebrew was until here.

    My interests change too often. One day I want to collect and play SMS games, the next I'm buying expensive Colecovision homebrews. If I sold off everything on one console to get high end stuff on another console I'd regret it quickly
