ROB Help

I picked up an NES ROB a while back and decided to try it out.  I don't have an NES much less any of the games that it uses so testing it out is not great.  I put in the batteries and turn it on.  Rob turns all the way to the right, then all the way to the left, then stops.  The red light on his head does not come on and no other part of his body moves.  Is this how it is supposed to operate?  Does he not move again unless told to do so in-game?  Is he broken beyond all repair?

  • Sounds right to me, did it do this when looking at the tv, also what kind of tv.
  • Sorry, but I don't know anything about ROB. This was just in my bedroom. Should I point him towards a CRT TV when turning him on?
  • Yeah. this is the default little move it makes when you turn it on. It needs commands from the TV to move any other way.
  • Sounds great, thanks. I just needed to make sure it worked!

you still dont know whether it goes up/down or whether the eyes work. You gotta pop in gyromite with a CRTV to test that.

  • Hello I purchased a rob and tested it with gyromite everything works except going up, it makes a ton of noise but won't move up any ideas on why may be wrong or what to try?

This is the probably the most common problem with rob units. You see, Nintendo used glue to keep one of the gears in place, over the last 30 years or so, this glue degraded causing the gear to slip, resulting in no upward movement. My advice would be to look up a tutorial on youtube.
  • So i glued that part with crazy glue and now it won't go up or down, after it was put back together the arms section has no grip to the head shaft it just drops, seems loose and I can't figure it out

same issue at this point with my rob. My guess is that either you glued the wrong part or the glue did not hold. Bear in mind that super glue says that it can dry in minutes but sometimes takes as long as a day to fully cure.
  • I watched the video on YouTube i definitely glued the right part, seems like the housing where the gears were is not tight to where it grips it to go up and down I'm at a loss

that means that the glue did not hold out very well. I would recommend finding something that is desined to grip to metal but is safe for plastic. That's all I can recommend, thats all I can think of other than to remanufacture the orginal part in one sold piece.

If you guys are sure you're gluing the correct parts and doing so correctly, I'd suggest using epoxy to put it back together.  It will usually create a much stronger bond than super glue and hold up better over a longer time period.  Just make sure that everything is 100% correct before doing so, though, as you can destroy whatever you're putting back together should you get it wrong and try to hack it back apart after the epoxy has set.  I'd recommend standard epoxy (which usually takes ~24 hours to fully cure) versus the special "plastic" version that they've come out with recently, as the "plastic" one doesn't set as hard/well.  Good luck!
  • do a test with the gyromite game to test all his movements

I know how to fix robs that arent working properly. Fixed a bunch of them. PM me for a specific problem. Its really complicated to explain how to fix all problems or what might be wrong

a majority of all the problems relate to the gears spinning freely and the old glue breaking up where the gear was glued to a washer. There are 2 gear box sets. The main one in the arm section that is a bitch to work on.  Then there is a gear box under the battery part at the bottom. One controls open and closing along with up and down. The gear box in the base handles the left and right.  Much easier to access and fix that one. Same principle though. Gear and washer spinning freely.

whatever you do, just take pictures of what you are about to take apart incase you cant get it back together.
  • I fixed a ROB not too long ago http://nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=8&threadid=153370

Make sure you use an excessive amount of glue and that the black spiral is glued to both the white cog and the silver piece!
  • I say give him a spurt of grease, and flash some lights at him, that always works for the zapper, they work the same way
  • ^ this will also remove drunks off your front and/or back porches in the middle of the night and those peskey religious door knockers during the day.
