If you aren't familiar with it, Hashima Island is a small island (16 acres) in Japan that was heavily built up to service a deep coal mine. It has been abandoned since 1974.
This somewhat eerie site lets you poke around the ruins a bit.
There's pretty cool pictures of battleship island on google maps/street view too(wait a minute, i think that site uses the same pictures?)--if you have a vr headset you can do the walk around thing. The history of the island is pretty neat too, and it has shown up in a few movies recently.
Thanks for the show recommend, I checked it out tonight and it was very informational. I would totally hit up a tour of the island if possible when I travel to Japan!
Bumping this... I just went there and it was really amazing. It was definitely worth it. I attached an ugly pic of mine on the island to this post
Also, speaking of creepy abandoned Japanese islands, I went to another island there (Okunoshima) that was also pretty spooky. And it has tons of bunnies on it.
One half has a lot of tourists because of the rabbits and because there's a resort but the other half is completely abandoned and has ruins of facilities that used to produce poison gas for the Japanese army during WW2. You basically are in a forest with abandoned WW2 buildings and tons of fluffy bunnies living nearby.
I love modern ruins and Japanese ones tend to be the best as they're not often vandalized, here are some cool ones, Nara Dreamland is a really famous one and Sports World is my favorite:

Very cool! Reminds me of Myst
Came to say the same thing
Must have watched mystery's of the abandoned last night as I did. Was pretty cool to watch
I did - it was also featured on an episode of "Life after People" - which had a somewhat differrent focus.
Thanks for sharing! I find abandoned human settlements fascinating.

I have several (maybe even all of them) of his photographic collections.
I also have several books of abandoned buildings along old route 66 which I find intersting.
(I have kind of eclectic (if not downright erratic) tastes. ) ^____^
Cool. I might have to look into some of those books.
This is another fave of mine:

It is out of print but if you dig a little you might be able to find a reasonably priced copy.

Neat. Is that the same island from Skyfall? Or did they use a different creepy abandoned Japanese island?
I believe they made up an island for that James Bond movie IIRC but they surely got inspired by Hashima/Gunkanjima

Didn't think so.
