I'm at a 6 or so right now. About to get married, gotta pick and choose what is important. I won't have as much time any more, so I have to decide where cuts need to be made. She knows I like gaming, but I know some cutbacks will still need to be made.
For me I am somewhere in the middle. I'd like to wonder how much of my answer has to do with the fact that I got a lot to do between school and other commitments. I don't ever really have time to invest in the hobby, that doesn't mean I don't have my saved search results for really cheap demo carts and such, but have not been really actively buying for a while. In fact selling off my certain parts. I seem to be selling off more sega stuff than anything right now because the last time I bought any sega was years ago before I went to college. I guess its just narrowing it down to what I like at the end of the day. Every game I buy is a game that either I am going to play, a demo cart going on display, or is a game that just straight up has beautiful cover art and looks cool.
I guess more or less is, what factors make collecting more or less important to you? For me its a few things. Lesser time, lesser money available as other expenses keep popping up, not being able to afford the big ticket items that I really want, lack of space/no real game room, overall no real availability of good deals considering the local flea market is all resellers who buy everything up at garage sales, and the fact that it seems a good chunk of the friends that I used to have living near me have all moved away to start their lives or joined the service so not many people left to enjoy the stuff I find with me. Things that keep me going are exciting finds like the Wii U kiosk that I turned into an arcade machine (still looking for a cheap set of wii controllers for it), demo carts that I remember in gamestores years ago growing up, having more income than in highschool, having an altogether much better gaming setup (not final), and finding new ways to make my collection look better and feel more complete to me.
I guess at the end of the day, it is yet another one of my hobbies that keeps me sane. I just really wish I had a better grasp at the hobby so that I can collect more games *pokes at that bubble with needle*. I don't know, summer is rolling around and its garage sale season, lets see what good deals I can get this time. I also still wonder if I would have been older when I started collecting in 2009 wher 12 year old me would ride my bicycle to local garage sales and eventually stumble accross my first few finds.
I'm like at a 6 over the last few years I got all the hardware I want so I been playing a lot of my stuff. I also have a lot of other hobbies like watching sports, software development side work, and hardware modding and repair.
I have all my life events behind me. I have kids, wife, paid off home, and a great career but I don't feel the urge to splurge with my leftover cash. I am still working on my nes set but I don't have that rush to finish it anytime soon. I am half way there and that is good enough for now.
I agree with others that it comes and goes the desire to get into full collect mode.
I said 5. I'm probably more of a "casual" collector by most people's terms here anyway. I don't collect full system sets, and I tend to grab games that interest me. I don't have anything ultra rare, but I do have quite a few games across most of the major systems.
I have a mortgage and I also really enjoy concerts/vinyl, so those things kind of limit how much money I can put toward games. Lately I'm focusing on newer systems, mainly Wii U/Switch and then games I'm actually interested in playing on PS4/XBox when they pop up, but that kind of collecting is much different since I can get most at retail locations. If I see a game cheap that I'd like to play, I pick it up. Maybe once every 1-2 months I will buy a retro game on ebay or pick something up at my local store. I'm playing games daily, and that's really more of what draws me to the hobby anyway.

Playing and collecting are solid 10/10. I'm new to the hobby so it's still very exciting to me. I don't have any other hobbies. I used to play in bands and collect records, but it's been years since I've done any of that, and I don't have any desire to go back to those things. I'm also single and most of my close friends have moved away or are busy with families and work so this is a great way for me to spend my time. My only other real interests these days are watching basketball, movies and sitting on the internet. I wasn't really doing anything before this. It's a great way for me to be nostalgic and have some fun.

Probably like a 3 right now for collecting. Still casually brows this site and will still stop by stores from time to time but pretty much when there's not much going on. Not to mention I rarely buy.
It was like an 11 when I was fully collecting and the first few waves of amiibos were being released. Don't miss those days. I spent almost every waking minute hunting games and refreshing websites for amiibos. Dark times... Don't miss that AT ALL.

Yeah, when most people start I assume they are 9/10 or 10/10 (myself included). Eventually you complete goals or get busier in life though, happens to all of us.

Yes, YES! Let the Famicom flow through you! Accept Famicom into your life!
Collecting is now at a 0 since my interests went back into music.
Playing is about a 3.

How is that relevant to the question?
I don't have to collect games to post on here.
I have friends I talk to on here as well.

Overall it's great to have a hobby that so many people enjoy, but we all have our moments where we want to do other things.

Just teasing hoser
Playing games pushes it to 6 out of 10. Gaming helps keeping me sane. Brewing booze myself keeps me saner.

I spend most of my time working, or working on the house but most of my free time is spent either playing games or dealing with my collection.

I wish we could get atleast half the user's of NA to vote but it is not likely, i would love to see a big sample size of the community vote.
at least half the users probably aren't even active anymore. And I'm not just talking about posting.

That's cool; welcome to the hobby!
0 on gaming (I want to get to a 4)
