Nintendo GameCube collecting, playing, and appreciation

So we have topics about the NES/SNES/N64/Wii/Wii U/Switch, Game Boy/DS/3DS, Sega consoles, Atari, Arcade games, PS1/PS2, and even the original Xbox. Which is great; it's nice to see pictures and talk about collecting for a large variety of consoles and handhelds.

...But are we forgetting something? Perhaps, maybe, an underrated purple/black/silver console from Nintendo?

I understand there used to be an "appreciation" topic for this console before I joined (came across it in a Google search), but that was years ago. There hasn't been much GameCube collecting talk recently, so I've decided to post a new topic about it.

With 600 or so games plus Japanese and PAL exclusives, four player games, demo discs, toys, music cd's, promo items, and more, there has got to be something to talk about. Are you still collecting for the GameCube? Do you even still have a GameCube? How many GameCube games do you have? Are there games, accessories, or related items that you've bought recently or are looking for? Do you have pictures to show of your GameCube collection?

My GameCube collection has 130+ games (not including imported games or demo discs), four GameCube's (indigo, black, silver, orange), four Wavebird controllers (and various Standard controllers), several Game Boy Players, and other accessories. I also have other items that people may not know about such as an official SD Card accessory, music CD's, and various documents/printings containing screenshots and game info from before the console was released. My most recent purchases are sealed copies of Tony Hawk's American Wasteland and Timesplitters 2.

I may post pictures of my GameCube collection if people show an interest (both in this topic and seeing my GameCube collection).

  • Gamecube is by no means forgotten. A lot of people here and elsewhere do collect it and play them, when I have doubles of good GC games they sell faster than anything else IMO.

I think it's just that GC is VERY recent and "up to date" compared to other games people collect. Up until very recently, and even now in some cases, even sealed or "rare" games are actually somewhat common and affordable.

I have a modest little GC collection, even though I do not really collect for it, I just have picked up what I could at a good price over the last few years, and ended up with some good stuff.

Don't show off much so here's mine atm, there's another row behind it.

Have a console with 2x each controller color and component cables I got for $20 a few years ago.

  • GC is my go to goodwill jam, I have probably found 30 mario sunshines there
  • Blooper is still alive, hell yes!!

Back on topic, i really love the resident evil ports for GameCube and of course, the gameboy player.
  • I have a pretty small gamecube collection but some good games! Always loved the system and had around 3X this many back in the day.

  • I have a decent, modest GC collection that I've been slowing chipping away at. I really enjoy the system, plus I got one as a gift at launch, so I've always had one.

He's always been alive within out hearts.

I have a small collection of gamecube games as well but had no luck for months on finding any gamecube games now...

  • Over the half way mark. Trying to avoid online purchases.
  • I love my GameCube mostly for the Gameboy player attachment. I also found the whole thing at Goodwill with 4 controllers for like a dollar.
  • My GC collection is the smallest out of that generation with mostly exclusives. I just find that multi-plats are better on the Xbox. A few multi-plat games I've kept for the GC due to nostalgia (Burnout, Def Jam Vendetta, 007 Agent Under Fire, NHL Hitz)

Great controller, GBA Player and some excellent exclusives totally make it worth owning but I just feel the library is weak compared to PS2/Xbox.
  • I think I'll finally hook up my Gamecube when I find a Game Boy Player. It's only been hooked up a few times in its life (it looks and feels brand-spanking new) - Once recently to play a game that wouldn't boot on the Wii. And once a long time ago back when I bought it and briefly played a few games.

I still haven't played Double Dash or Sunshine, but would like to.

My GC library is small but consists of some good games such as Skies of Arcadia - Legends, Lost Kingdoms 2, and Tales of Symphonia. It's just easier to play them on the Wii IMHO.
  • I was never a huge fan of Gamecube but the Christmas I got it was very memorable. My mom and my grandmother sat and watched me play the Resident Evil remake and Super Mario Sunshine. Metroid Prime was a lot of fun. And I think the game I put the most time into was SSX 3. I loved Tricky on PS2 and I thought the third was great. The fact that you could board the entire mountain in one run was awesome.

I recently got a Gamecube and Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance basically for free. I can't find my memory card so I may have to buy one. Haven't even turned the thing on yet. I imagine I'm going to play the hell out of SSX 3 again once I get started.
  • What is the best option for hooking a GameCube to a modern TV?

You have to love GameCube just because the size of the absolutely adorable game discs

    Size doesn't matter!
  • I always loved the GameCube. It was never my favorite but always had a special place in my heart. I have about 60 or so games. Used to have more, but I downsized in favor of more NES/SNES/N64 games. It's true I hardly see anyone talk about GameCube anymore. I think the system is excellent with a great variety of genres. I don't collect for it anymore really, though I did at one point. I just want to concentrate on other systems at the moment and I have all of my "must have" games for it anyway.

Ideally you would use a Wii via component. GC component cables are ridiculously expensive.

    SSX3 is a fantastic game

No One has forgotten the gamecube by any stretch, In fact I would say more people are starting to exit their N64 Nastalgic phase a bit earlier and are jumping back into the Gamecubes popular titles. Even Nintendo has a remake of all of the Zeldas from the Gamecubes generation and have been on the Wii U for quite a few years now. (Twilight Princess, Wind Waker)

Every resale shop I frequent usually has little to no GameCube titles. Either the systems library of games are in demand now or there were less games printed than originally anticipated.

I personally have over a Hundred titles on the GameCube, I agres with "Hydrus" I even have most of the Heavy Hitters on the system but even still I probably will never go for a complete set anyway just because there's other things I have been focused at throwing my money at.

With all of that said I am still in market for a GCN Kiosk

I even have a PS2 Kiosk for Trades

Agreed. It's not my favorite either, but compared to other consoles (even compared to Dreamcast) it seems like there isn't much GameCube action happening these days...almost as if the console has gone into "hiding" or faded into obscurity, which is kind of unusual for a major console (even if it isn't and never was the most popular).
  • Sorry. Can't agree with you. GC has not aged well in my opinion. Dumped everything but the zeldas and resident evils just a few months ago for a nice chunk of change.
  • The console doesn't get much love. With good reason.

Has not aged well? compared to what? the PS2 in that generation??? people are still buying that stuff up and the ports of titles on the PS2 were vastly inferior to say the PS2/PS1/N64 at the time. Like I mentioned above I always see loads more PS2/Xbox games laying around compared to GCN. Demand is there people are just not aware of it yet or are busy invested elsewhere.

    2001-2007

Multiplatform General Rule= XBOX > GCN > PS2       (Since PS2 suffered in such departments as rendering Interlaced , Frame Rate drops, lack of Anti Aliasing & Longer Load Times)

(EXAMPLES: Soul Calibur 2, Resident Evil 4, Star Wars: Jango Fett, Shadow The Hedgehog, Viewtiful Joe, Killer 7,

Tales of Symphonia,Spiderman 2, Simpsons hit and Run jut to name a few.)

Not to Mention one of my favorite games of all time, and still the only "Official" Metal Gear Solid "Remake"  (The Twin Snakes)  that has still to this day never been ported to any other Platform Physical nor Digital!

Now tell me that  The Gamecube Hasnt "Aged Well"?

  • A bunch of the cinematic's in twin snake's really kill the mood, it just kill's the tension. That is the bad part of that game and in my opinion those change's to the cinematic's make's it the inferior version.

Overall i agree with your statement.

Yeah I have to agree some of the voice acting originally bugged me, But people also complain about the cinematics too and that to me is just getting a bit too nit picky.

Well said, many of it's games hold up well and accessories such as the Wave Bird and Game Boy Player make it even better. However this is what, among other things, I was talking about. Because it is so underrated to the point where it's talked about even less than other underrated consoles (like the Dreamcast), it isn't too surprising that people continue to bash it. Heck I remember people bashing it before it was release. Some things never change I guess, and this is one of those instances where it's unfortunate.
  • The gamecube is fantastic no doubt.
  • lol at Star Wars: Jango Fett

I will say, though, Metroid Prime still looks damn good.

Indeed it does sir, indeed it does
  • Key words:  "my opinion."

It's mine.  I have it.  I stand by it.

It's my opinion.  I think the gamecube is weak.  You guys are totally within your right to like it.  But it's my opinion.  I'm not trying to convince you to agree, I never was.  And you'll never convince me to change it.

I know. I didn't say you can't share your opinion, nor was I even trying to make you change it. I was just stating *my* opinion that it's a bit unfortunate GameCube is so underrated/not talked about much (wasn't necessarily saying posting your opinion was unfortunate) and that I agree with Otraotaku that those games have aged well.
