What did they import?

Since I can only see from an American prospective, I only see games that come out in the America. I have some knowledge of games that never came out here. So I naturally imported them to have a physical copy to play them. From Sega Saturn, Super Famicom and Playstation.

So what did America have game wise that PAL and Japan didn't have? I'm more curious about Japan since they seem to get every game and then some. I only know of games like Earthbound and I believe Super Mario RPG (excluding PAL)

That's true, and it's a darn fine game. We actually got a good RPG that they didn't get. Shocking!

  • Monster Party was North America only. Which is surprising given the number of Japanese culture references in the game.

I think I know a few of these off hand.  I think I made a list somewhere.  Bubble Bobble Part 2, Godzilla 2, Waynes World, Toxic Crusaders, Contra Force, Kickmaster, Frankenstein, Casino Kid 2, Marios Time Machine.

There are probably a bunch more, but these are the expensive games that were ONLY released in the US.

  • Oh and with that im sure that a few of the developers of those games were pretty much NTSC only (like KID), so I think GI Joe and GI Joe Atlantis, Isolated Warrior, Low G Man, The Terminator, Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle id probably add too.

Isolated Warrior got a Japan release as Max Warrior. I believe it had a PAL release, too.

  • I stand corrected! Just went off the top of my head.
  • No problem.   I'm pretty sure you're right on the others. Low G Man may have also had a PAL release, but don't quote me.
  • Japan never got Go Go Hypergrind.
  • I own PAL copies of both Low G Man and Isolated Warrior (my first EVER game alongside Mario 2!).

I don't know about Japan, but I can tell you that oftentimes people in PAL land would import either US or Japanese systems so we could play the games sooner... These days we get the games at the same time or even before the US, but even as recently as the GameCube era we would get games sometimes YEARS after they were out everywhere else! That was the main reason people imported, the exclusives and superior experience were added bonuses!
  • Flintstones Dino peak wasn't on Famicom either
  • I would assume that they never got show themed games like Sabrina the teenage witch or something. A lot for Gameboy advance games where made for children. But I just found out that they did get Spongebob over there so.... Didn't even know that Japan cared about Spongebob at all really.

Yeah but PAL!  I think the question was what games were only NTSC and not famicom and PAL
  • If you go here, you can see a list of NES games that never made it to Japan:

    http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=10650.0

Some of the games on that list did make it to other Famicom regions though, some of the unlicensed games. Baby Boomer, for example, had an official Korean (Famicom) release, so did Crystal Mines and Challenge of the Dragon (not to be confused with the Sachen game), but of course Japan never got those.

Also, a large portion of the games on that list had received bootleg versions back in the day, distributed across Asia, Central / Eastern Europe (i.e. Poland, Russia, etc), South America. So if you ask someone from Thailand, for example, if they ever played Flintstones 2 growing up, they might have, despite it never receiving an official Japanese release.

I once saw a neat article about this written from back in the day in a magazine, I've been meaning to scan it at some point, and translate it.

The vast majority of 8 bit releases that weren't officially released in Japan are not the best, imo, most being average at best and turds at worst. Things like Talespin, Darkwing Duck, GI Joes were good, but there were a lot of crappy titles too...

Also, Bubble Bobble 2 was released in Japan.

Edit:  Also, Famicom games are NTSC.
  • Thank you fcgamer. That list is helpful. I've always been curious but didn't know if a list existed.

Plus that helps if the game did get an official release but under a different name. Like Super Mario Bros. 2 is different from Japan....on the original release

That makes sense, doesn't it? If you have a good game with lots of cross-cultural appeal, you want to sell it in other regions.

Isolated Warrior, Low G Man, The Terminator

all three of these were released in PAL regions on NES, although The Terminator only in Germany..

or at least it only exists with a German country code, doesn't 100% mean it was only available in Germany though...

there are quite a few games that were available in stores here in the Netherlands with foreign country codes only, most notable example here would probably be Rodland (ESP code) & Tecmo Cup Football Game (ESP code) , and to a lesser known extent, even the Asian version of Tetris, which was imported to the Netherlands due to the inmense popularity of the game itself....
  • I suppose NES has been covered with that link. Only SNES game I can think of is Metal Warriors.
  • There are a lot of SNES games too, without Japanese releases. I started to collect the bootleg versions I come across, but I have yet to find a good list of them.
