Sansui SSS Whati? Pro Tips For Cleaning?

So I learned something new this week.

I completely missed the hype train on this one and had no idea it existed. I've since read the threads and the "god-tier" one, haha.

Anyways, a few days ago I picked one up with some games. (Looked intriguing so I wanted it)

Before I looked it up online I tried it out. Got my headphones out, plugged in the sound jack thingy. Blew my mind away. Luckily the D-pad (although sticky to begin with) works and Start/Select work well.

But now, I have to try to "fix"/clean the B-A buttons and clean up the D-Pad. The B Turbo switch doesn't move at all, and the A Turbo only moves between low and medium.

Any pro-tips for cleaning this bad boy???

I've read on some of the threads here in regards to soldering some parts, which helps. Well, that's way above my experience level. And I don't have the tool necessary.

I've cleaned other controllers, not with a ton of success. So I'm a little on the hesitant side with this one.

It looks like someone spilled about 8L of pepsi on it. The D-pad has gross brown stuff on it and feels sticky. The B-A buttons barely move, but when pressed hard enough they work. The sound shift is stuck in the "ON" position, so that's not bad. And the volume works fine. Sssssoooooooo, I was hoping a light cleaning would do the trick.

My plan was this:

1) Take screws out... one looks a little shady.

1) Clean the D-Pad & A-B buttons (warm soapy water).

2) Clean the contacts with Alcohol & Q-tip

... cross my fingers?

  • I usually do the same thing while cleaning, so you should be good. I also VERY LIGHTLY brush the graphite-looking part on some paper to clear up any gunk on them. You'll see a black line, like writing with a pencil. You could accidentally wear them down doing that, so that method is for wizards-only. lol

I think I may still have one of these at the game store I work at... I'll have to check when I get into work tomorrow.
  • You're on the right path. Dunk the body and buttons in warm soapy water and scrub. Clean the PCB contacts with alcohol. If you don't have sound to the headphone jack, or trouble with turbo after that, the pin headers that connects the two boards together will probably need resoldered on the joints. Pretty common issue. Be very careful when desoldering. The quality of the PCB traces are low, and it's easy to lift a trace.
  • Welcome to the Sansui JoyCard club! Your methods appear sound. Once you Sansui, you never go back.
  • Pop. The ultimate enemy of controllers.
  • Thanks for the feedback everyone!

When I get a full day to myself, hopefully Sunday, I'll take this bad boy apart.

Haha, that's what I'm afraid of NostalgicMachine... what if it's TOO good??? Then what!? Then I'll NEED one forever and ever!

And yeah, Pop is the ultimate enemy of controllers. So easily spilled and it gets inside everything.

Certainly hidden alright! When I saw it in the box, I was like "WTF?"

Pulled it out and organized the cord and saw the audio cord and headphone jack. There was NO WAY I could let her walk away with it, I was far too intrigued. My Spidey-sense was right on this one.
  • I don't have one of these, guess I'm not cool

Anyone who is named Bert with a CIB TMNT IV is cool in my books
  • damn, reminds me that I traded/sold mine without really giving it a chance, likely for pennies on the dollar. Sounds like I really slipped up letting it go.

Don't beat yourself up, man. You'll come across another.

Perhaps if I get this one fixed up, I'll be able to comment on whether it's "god tier" or not.

Right now, it's neat at best. If the B-A buttons come out well, and the turbo works... then I could see myself thinking that. But until I get this bad boy cleaned, I can't comment on it's godliness.

Also, this can be the dedicated thread to cleaning them... although it's just a really basic cleaning I'm doing.

If anyone else has more pro cleaning tips, bring 'em on!
  • What shape are the pads inside?
  • I have had 4 of these and only 1 ever gave me trouble. I bought one NOS and use it often. It's a fantastic controller. On par with OEM without a doubt. The treat linked goes into great detail on how it stacks up against other turbo controllers. Good luck cleaning it up!

I haven't opened it yet     The B-A buttons barely press down they're so sticky, but as stated, they do work.

I'm waiting until I have a full day off to do it all at once. Take apart, clean, dry, reassemble.

Well that's good news. I'm still hesitant, but optimistic.

Haha, yeah... the god-tier thread certainly gives it a thumbs up, to say the least.

    Thanks!
  • SUCCESS!!

The inside looked like there was tar spilled inside. I was curious, so I smelled it. Smelled sweet. So... I guess it was pop.

I had a little trouble making sure the controller wire didn't ge smushed in the controller housing, but I was just careful and it seemed to work out great.

For anyone reading in the future, the cleaning worked well as described above. Warm/hot soapy water... took care of that shit. I just did a super basic clean, though. Everything works well now.

I can now comment in the god-tier thread, haha.
