Positive Pop Ups
I understand pop up ads. I hate them, but understand why they exist. For me, its very rare that a 30 second video on YouTube or 5 second video on a free mobile game interests me. Im making this thread because I only found out about the new Micro Machines game from not skipping the ad. And now it might be the next game I purchase.
A few others are a Marvel mobile game I got addicted to (not enough to put any money in), and another for sore throat medicine. The timing on seeing that commercial was perfect.
Have any of you seen had this happen? Maybe a banner above a site that lead to that web comic you love. Or a quick ad that lead to a big hobby of yours.

I hate pop-ads because of their intrusiveness, but I have occasionally seen one from a non-profit organization, which was a nice change of pace from all the awfulness out there. Pop-up blockers sure come in handy, though.
I bought a case of that new lemonaid soda that 7up has and I was drinking some while browsing instagram. Scroll past an ad for it. I think they're spying on me through my phones camera
Thats weird man, I tried a can of that stuff (pretty good), I started seeing more ads for it showing up.
That is how I met Redneck_RN....$20 shipped from Russia.
We met online and I said "POKAZHI MNE SVOI HUI" and you had me on the next flight out.

Nothing 'random' about it. I recently purchased a wedding ring and had done absolutely no previous searches online. The week after I purchased every other ad was for jewelery outlets. I'm guessing my computer was able to trace my credit card activity. It's crazy! Or my phone location picked up that I was in the store. It's fucking freaky sometimes, especially now that everything is linked (location, text, bills, calls, web search etc.).
Imagine how easy it is to get the info now with the mobile apps that let you pay with a phone.

yeah, I purchased contact lenses that weren't even for me, like a year ago, and still get ads for that
Ahh Big R at work what is happening here is targeted advertising companies sell info to advertisers or they get the info through web searches use of credit cards. They then flood your computer or other online device with the advertisements.

All part of the game, dude. It's ridiculous how little protection there is from this. I really wish the Canadian Gov't would step in on a lot of these issues concerning advertising, selling of info, collusion etc.

A lot of people wish for protection from this type of thing but I'm sure Big R is scratching the back of Big G to be able to do this in all the countries
Really makes you wonder how Free you really are

Yeah, it's sad as it's almost impossible to get away from. Even things like cars and TVs are pushing this tech as they become 'smart', plus like we mentioned with everything combined on your cell phone etc. Home phone or cell it doesn't matter - The company is likely selling your info and phone number to advertising agencies. It can be pretty scary knowing everything you do online is filed away just waiting to be lost, stolen, or bought. I'm not a tinfoil hat kinda guy but I pretty much assume everything I do online is up for grabs. Over the last 10 years I've probably had as many alerts about server security issues that could have potentially leaked my information. Then there was that gov't employee who left a harddrive on a public bus containing all the personal and financial information about everyone in Canada with a student loan between certain years. Class action lawsuit out for that one though at least.
