My List!

Sorry. Just finished watching an old school Scooby Doo cartoon.

Anyway. Have you ever gone to buy a game at a store or convention, but can't remember if you already had it? I know theres collectors who shrug it off, take the risk and buy it anyway, but personally, I don't need copies. I rarely trade games so I have no need for it. The list I use needs updating, and last month I went to a comic-con and saw loads of older games. When it came to GameCube games I wasnt sure what I needed, and those I definately needed were too expensive.

Has this happened to anyone else? Like I said, Im sure theres people here that would have bought it without thinking, regardless.

  • No list needed my memory is my list, never bought a double due to a mistake.
  • I bought two Spud's Adventures because I didn't reference what I had and mixed it up with Amazing Tater (crazy how one would mix up two pricey GB games with potato art). I constantly have my phone out when looking through games. I assume sellers think I'm checking every price to try to find something mispriced.
  • My list is google sheets. Which comes with me as long as i have my phone. I very rarely need to use it though because most of my stuff is in memory.

I have a smaller collection though than most people here. Like 350 games ish across all the systems i have.
  • I have lists but they're mainly for when I'm buying online or showing someone what I have. I generally know the things that cost $20+ that I own so I don't risk buying doubles. Lower dollar games I will just take the risk and buy it depending on how much else I'm getting.
  • Google Docs. There's been a few times we haven't been sure if we already owned the game, but thankfully, our list saves us from ever buying a double by mistake.
  • I have had list in the past but I go by memory for the most part. Its only failed me a few times.
  • I have a list of manuals/boxes I'm missing to make a game complete, those I have a hard time remembering. Once all those are sorted out I won't need one though. Just a few CIBs Ill be after at that point
  • Done it way to many times (thankfully nothing that expensive). I finally got sick of it and started using an app on my phone to keep track of stuff. Now I pull it up on my phone and swipe through it. It's saved me from buying a bunch of duplicates. So saved me money. That's always a bonus.

I use My Game Collection on Android.
  • Picture(s) of what you already have might be better.
  • Great answers. I rarely see GameCube games in the wild so I was unprepared. Will sort out my list ASAP.

I used to find them all the time  how times have changed
  • i have a semi-photographic memory , no lists needed
  • I've bought the same game twice on more then one occasion. I actually had a stack of games that I had more then one copy of.
  • With all the other sets I've worked on (NES, SNES, and N64) I've been able to go off memory pretty well, but always had an updated list through google docs that I could easily access. Now that I'm working on GameCube I have a horrible time remember what games I have and which I don't. I'm down to needing 160ish and have to reference my list almost all the time. Not sure what it is about GameCube but I just cant seem to remember what I have accurately.
  • I have all my games in spreadsheets on my phone. Sometimes I am sure I don't have a game and don't reference my sheet and it feels like 100% of the time, I end up buying a double.
  • The easiest list I've ever made was just printing the entire list of a certain console, and just checking off what I own. Way easier than typing everything out.

But even then, I forget said list, and there are times when I do buy the same thing twice. No real biggie since I could use the double as an upgrade/trade bait.
  • I have a list of games I need in my email. Whenever I get new games I update it.
  • I started to run into this problem with cheap commons which is why I stopped buying them altogether. If you can't remember if you own a game or not it's probably a sign you shouldn't buy it (unless you are collecting a full set or something). I for some reason have a much harder time knowing what Blurays I already own. I recently took a picture of what I have for reference.
