Anybody fix Virtual Boys here?

Hey NA,

Managed to get a good deal on a CIB virtual boy thanks to one of the screens being glitched. Got half my money back. Now i just need to fix it.

I know of the oven/heat gun trick, as i have done it before. But i was wondering how long that solution works, and is there anyone here who could do the permanent solder fix?

Thanks for any help!

  • Resetting the glue with heat doesn't last, get your Virtual Boy soldered, it's a permanent fix.

YoshiKnuckles and NesFreak here on NA can do the solder repair method. HP Lovethrash at PlanetVB.com can also do it. Lastly, TheForce81 at PlanetVB.com can as well but he's in the Netherlands.

Thanks Guntz, i appreciate it. I wonder what they charge? Has to be less than the guy charging $150 on ebay lol

  • Mine hasn't had the issue yet but I have the tools to do it as well. Note: you can't get in with a standard game bit.
  • I had the service performed here on NA a few years ago....actually they sent me their soldered unit, and I sent them my broken one + cash was how it worked...

Don't bother putting it in the oven at all. Don't even open it. A lot of people won't work on a unit that has been baked.
  • Yeah i don't plan on baking it. I honestly just want the permanent fix for it. It is CIB and in amazing shape, the old couple said it was used once and stored away. It even has the KB sticker on it where it was marked down to $19.99! Nuts. After the refund i paid $95 shipped for it.

I have the extra long bits, so i am not worried about opening it if i absolutely need to.

I just hope someone around here does the repair so i can just pay to have it done correctly.

Thanks man! I will shoot him over an email now.

  • It's a lot of work, so maybe not cheap, but he's good at what he does. Good luck.

He actually got back to me and his price was more than reasonable. I am excited to finally have one of these, especially since it will be soldered and never have to worry about this issue again.

    Thanks again man
  • You're welcome!
  • I got mine soldered a few years back by dogp on the virtual boy forums. Best repair ever had performed.
  • Yeah it's a nice thing to just turn on a Virtual Boy and know it's going to work without having to screw around with it for an hour just to get 5 minutes of gameplay out of it
  • I think i'll be contacting yoshi about my gamegear too.
