Tmnt 1 cover

Just got my hands on a copy of tmnt yesterday. All the turtles are red! What! Is this another instance of the Berenstein/Berenstain issue!

I then went to the cover project to print my UGC label and they were all red too! I did notice a few other covers where people took the
Liberty of correctly coloring the turtles. Good work but what in the world.

Not only are you the weird red headed step child turtles game you are factually inaccurate!

  • They all had red masks in the original comics. It wasn't until the cartoon that they got different colors.

The first TMNT game had the red masks. I remember that caused a lot of discussion and arguments on the playground from kids that never saw the comics.

Exactly, comics were all red and colors didn't come later until the series was more commercialized.
  • I think Dan has a copy, maybe he can post it for us to see

Ps I also know that on the original they all had red masks
  • Well man you learn something new everyday.
  • The first TMNT game was created while the cartoon was still in production IIRC, that's why the game's box art uses the comic turtles.

Don't feel bad, I was shocked to learn that too.  My only experiences with TMNT was the video games and cartoon, didn't have the comic knowledge prior.

I was absolutely obsessed with the turtles when I was younger that is why I am surprised but that makes sense. I was too young for the comics.

  • I think at least 95% of TMNT fans grew up without the comics and didn't know about the all red thing. Combine that with the fact that there were a lot of aspects of the game that had nothing to do with TMNT, and it wouldn't be difficult to assume that the game creators simply got the cover art wrong. Most of us thought that at one point or another.
  • Yeah, the TMNT comic books were kind of a cult/underground thing compared to the rest of the franchise.

The new movies were supposed to be closer to the comics (such as Raphael's personality), but they kept the different masks. Because it's not like there was any other way to tell them apart, like different weapons or something.

They could take a page form Duck Tales and always have them standing in the same order.

    ***EDIT*** Duck, not Duke

The original live-action movie lifted heavily from the original comics. Splinter originally being an ordinary rat and not a mutated human, Leonardo almost getting killed by the Foot and recovering in a country farm, Shredder's final battle on a rooftop were all from the Mirage comic run.

I remember buying a collected issue trade book at a comic shop back when I was big into the cartoon series. The comic blew my mind: It was far darker and bloodier than what I was used to from the cartoon.

Which makes sense since the movie was much more violent and dark than I expected as a kid.  I still loved it though.  I remember how excited I was to hear one of the turtles say a swear word.  In fact, isn't the first word spoken by any of the turtles, "Damn"?  Or am I not remember that correctly?

I think there was an "oh man" first or something when he loses his sai, but he curses right after that iirc.

  • It was Michael Dooney's cover for the 2nd printing of tmnt #4
  • I must say, I never seen someone ask this question before.

    Glad you learned something though.

Yeah.   Oh and OP they don't really eat pizza either   They changed/bastardized a ton of stuff for the cartoon but somehow both versions worked

  • The Turtles Graphic novels are really well done and totally different than the original TV series. I highly recommend them out.
  • You're all wrong about the comics being all red. The comics were black and white yo! ;p
  • Don't the in game turtles have the individual colors though?

    Indeed they do!

No pizza but they drank beer.

  • If the new movies were supposed to be more like the original comics, they failed terrible. Casey Jones is a COP in the new movie!!! A COP! The opposite of a vigilante! Boooo I say.
  • That Casey Jones was the worst part of the movie. Otherwise, I thought it was pretty awesome.
  • I thought he was a prison guard.

Anyway, I meant more how like Raph is moodier and less wisecracking than he was in the cartoon, stuff like that.

That doesn't make any damn sense, if the game cover is based on the comic book and the colors didn't make an appearance until the cartoon!

I don't know my TMNT history but that doesn't seem right lol
  • Its pretty simple, they made the game after the cartoon came out, but they used art repurposed from a time when the cartoon had not yet come out.

The comic on the right is the original use of the art.   The comic on the left is the first printing of the same book (#4 as archon stated).

Not all NES box art started out as NES box art.    Some were lifted from other sources, like this one.

100% truth. I had him sign my NES box a few years ago at a con.
  • I mean I really like TMNT but I thought everyone knew this.

In this universe, sure, but what if the Large Hadron Collider ripped a hole in the fabric of spacetime and pulled Chuppa3 from his universe where they wore different colors on the NES game to this universe where they all wore red? Ever think of that? I bet not.
