The Comic Art Appreciation thread

I really admire artists who go all out to create a truly epic scene. Sometimes the sheer scale or level of detail can be jaw draw dropping. Here's a couple examples:

Deathblow & Wolverine by Aron Wiesenfeld

Warriors of Plasm by David Lapham

Gozilla: Half Century War by James Stockoe

  • I'm not a fan of detail for detail's sake but when its done well it can definitely add a lot.

This sounds like an opportunity to post some of my Groo original art      I bought all of issue 21 from Sergio a few years ago.

  • On the general subject of comic book art, I've always appreciated the work of Dave Cockrum (for those unfamiliar, he's probably best known for his work on the "new" X-Men and co-creator of Storm, Nightcrawler and Colossus). His work was very iconic for me, bold and classically "comic book". In some ways, I see influences from Jack Kirby, which is a compliment in every conceivable sense. His passing was very sad, particularly because he was also a friend-of-a-friend. Cockrum is responsible for probably my favorite comic book cover of all time. I love the symmetry, the rich colors, the bold lines:

  • Very cool thread. I'll have to take some pictures of my favorite pages a little later. But as far as artists go I'm a fan of Neil Adams, Bernie Wrightson, John Totleben, Frank Quitely, Jeff Smith, Dave Gibbons, Joe Quesada, Frank Miller, Jim Steranko, Barry Windsor Smith, Moebius....I could go on forever.

On a related note. I fucking hate Romita Jr.

    Not so subtle Christ imagery

    That is really cool

  • I never got into comics like some of you folks, but I've always appreciated the artwork that goes into it. I knew a few comic artists growing up (well, those who aspired to be comic artists, one had his own local print run as well), so it was really neat seeing the process they took from start to finish.
  • I'll post some later from my collection including video game related comics. I appreciate the real detailed art such as Neil adams and I appreciate the goofy such as Scott young. Due to nostalgia my favorite is Todd McFarlane, the definitive spider man drawer for me even more so than Romita Sr.
  • I always liked Arthur Adams, Jim Lee, Alan Davis, and Mark Texeira and probably a few others I can't think of right off.
  • Rob Schrab's Scud the Disposable Assassin was a favorite of mine in high school and college. In 1998 he left the series on a cliff hanger and didn't return to it for 10 years. When he came back, his art style had gotten noticeably more experimental and bold. Some really crazy stuff going on here:

I like the cut-away view traveling through the sewer pipe. Very video game-esque.

This page might win the award for the most panels on a single page

  • So this looks like as good a place as any to ask this:

Do you think that $15 is a fair price for 4 vintage Mads and 2 vintage Archies? I spoke to the guy who is selling them yesterday, and he said that's as low as he'll go for them. These are the issues in question:

I enjoyed some of the Spidey storylines from the McFarlane era of course...but I never really found myself enjoying his artstyle with the series. He definitely set a very different tone for Spidey and that's fine. On an artistic level though, his characterizations never did much for me.

  • Here is a comic cover that covers two of my passions Deadpool and video games. I can't attach shit this site has the worst upload system ever for mobile pics.
  • This one side of my bat book

Has some of the greats in batman book history

  • I love comic book art. It's my favorite art form. I never really READ comics though, just don't have a lot of time to, but I admire the art of it a lot.
