F**k Fear!

Was there something that scared you as a kid, BUT you checked it out years later and laughed it off?

It might not be easy for some, but there may have been a scene in a movie or game that seriously made you run out of the room as a child, but you decided its been long enough and you want to face it again.

Ive heard a few people say the shark in Banjo Kazooie made them stop playing entirely, and seeing Sloth from Goonies caused nightmares.

My sister HATED Michael Jacksons face at the end of Thriller. And I ran out of the room when a certain advert for crisps (Yes, crisps) showed up. Years later and I can watch it and smile. Hell, Im watching it as I type this!

Anyone ever get over their childhood fear? Please share.

  • Nope...still scared by Arachnophobia and additionally Jeff Daniel's acting!
  • As a kid, I couldn't watch the scene in return of the Jedi, where luke takes off Vader's mask, his face creeped me out.
  • Underwater levels always use to kind of make me feel uneasy as a kid, not sure what it was but they just did.

    Only on N64 though.............
  • I used to fear spiders - now I kinda respect them.
  • I was attacked by a dog once on my way to work when I was a teenager, still have the scar I think. Though I wasn't scared of dogs after. The owner was a Carnie and I got free rides out of it
  • Men are still very scary. But I try to strike fear into their hearts now so they share my dread.
  • The train tunnel scene from Sesame Street.

From the YT comments, apparently my sisters and I weren't the only ones!

    EDIT:  Here it is

  • The eels early on in Mario 64.
  • I was always freaked out by the final form of Andross in Star Fox 64. Those damn eyes. Now I find it comical.
  • For whatever reason, My Chemical Romance's Welcome to the Black Parade music video scared me when I first saw it.

Happens to be one of my favorite songs and music videos now
  • The PS2 bad disc screen. Pure fear.
  • The troll at the end of the movie Cat's Eye used to terrify me as a kid. I watched it a few months back and it laughable now.
  • The monsters from Look Who's talking Too

    The cover of Ghoulies
  • Underwater parts in games still get me pretty good. Uh.. something stupid. The Big Bad Wolf from Disney's The Three Little Pigs. NOT the cartoon, the one from the Golden Books series.
  • I used to be scared to stand up to a lot of people as a kid. Some of it bullying, other just because I was always skinny and talked down to. At some point in life that all changed and I have absolutely no fear of anyone. I'm serious, as a kid, I was always picked on because I was too scared to fight back or say anything. I lived high school in total fear, before shit like bullying was actually taken seriously in schools. It's all about showing no fear and you realize people play on emotions. I used to avoid eye contact when I had to talk to people or give speeches in school. Well, now I know that eye contact is powerful tool when speaking to people. I also found fear in seeing someone from my past who had a negative impact on me. Nowadays, bring them on, between me giving up negative energy and hostile feelings, I am open to speaking to anyone, anywhere, anytime.
  • The Large Marge scene in Pee Wee's Big Adventure.
  • The sewer scene when you first encounter pennywise(and most others) from the original IT. I watched it at a friends house when I was quite young then had to walk home at 11pm in the dark all the way across town by myself. Every street sewer entrance scared the crap out of me and I would avoid and run past them as much as possible. Screwed up thing was I had to walk in the road closer to them as most of the street lights in my little town didn't work for crap on the sidewalks so it was very dark unless you were just on the side of the road :/.

Nowadays I can laugh about it but w/e I'm alone walking down a dark streeet with sewer drain spots I always go back to that memory o.O lol.

No joke...just got chills thinking about that again.

  • Yup. It took me a couple of years to finish watching "Ernest Scared Stupid," because of the troll.

Hmm yeah, when she turns around and he's in th bed with her?  That was some scary shit for PG

  • Nope NO FEAR! Just a Boss! That's why I'm The Hero!. But if a gamer was to be scared ibet they be scared of this!

    Tale of the Pinball Wizard:

  • I used to be scared of dogs. Now I have a dog.
  • Hmmm:

The flying monkeys in Wizard of Oz when I was like 5 or 6 scared the crap out of me. I've watched it since and it's obviously kind of silly.

The clown from It scared me when I was young, but rewatching it helped me realize it was pretty tame.

The clown from poltergeist when he was in the bedroom made me jump back like 15 feet from the tv and made me not sleep for like a week. I don't think I'll ever be able to watch that one again without paralyzing flashbacks.
  • The box to lawnmower man on the snes creeped me out as a kid.

the wheelers from return to Oz.
  • I was afraid of E.T.

I loved the movie, but I remember watching the movie from underneath a chair... I'd look away every time E.T. came on the screen.

The scene when he's half dead in the river still freaks me out.
  • Here are some things that scared me as a kid, but that don't scare me anymore:

    - Majora's Mask: You know, when you put your N64 cartridge in your console, the game starts with the mask turning and advancing toward you. That always scared myself as a young kid.

    - Gruntilda's painting: In Banjo-Kazooie, the painting of Gruntilda in the first room of Gruntilda's Lair. I didn't like the witch back then: I found her scary. Today, I love her and find her very funny.

    - The forest in a childhood film of mine (The Three Little Pigs): Take a look at 12:32. Still pretty scary for children, I think.

    - The moon in Majora's Mask: Enough said !

    - Andross in Star Fox 64: The green background, so destabilizing, with that horrible face, made me dislike this game for a pretty long time.

    - Regan MacNeil from The Exorcist: I remember when I began to start using Internet, my friends and I would challenge ourselves with scary games on flash games sites. One of them was that famous scary maze game. Needless to say, I have very bad memories of that game. After, I learned that that face was from The Exorcist. I finally watched the movie with my brother and I fought my fear. Myself being born in 1999, and I was like 10 years old when I played that game, I can't believe how scary that movie was for its time.

    - Tweek vs. Craig, the South Park episode: In this episode, Richard Adler, a teacher, is depressed about the death of his fiancée. You can see in this episode a real woman dying in her jet plane (if my memory serves right). Sure, these aren't real images, but I didn't like them at all. Yeah, South Park is not for kids, but I watched that episode anyway. And I regretted it.

    - EXTERIO - Bonhomme 7h: In French Canada (Québec), there is a legend to scare kids to go to bed. This legend is about a bad guy or monster that kidnaps kids that aren't in bed or not yet asleep after 19:00. EXTERIO, a band from Québec, made a song about that legend and my brothers used to watch MTV back then. This song passed on the channel and I was there. That video sure scared me ! Here it is:

There are probably more things, but that's all I can think of at the moment.
  • McDonalds Fry Guys. For some reason I thought thats what was hiding in the dark.
  • I was scared of the zombies in Thriller. Now see my avatar.
  • Jaws! I seen this movie at a friends house at age 4. Ill never be relaxed entering any bit of saltwater for as long as live becasue of thatv movie. Hell it took me a good 4-5 years just to go in a lake again, I failed swimming lessons after that! That damn shark was everywhere.
  • Night of the Living Dead terrified me as a kid. When I was a little older, I watched that, Dawn, Day, and Return of the Living Dead. Still creeped me out but I fell in love with them. The original Dead trilogy is one of my favorite movie trilogies.
