UK parents not allowed to bring dying child to US for treatment

Seems crazy. Is this fake news?

The parents of a critically ill baby in the UK have reportedly been told by a European court that they’re not allowed to privately pay for their son to fly to the United States to receive “experimental treatment” and instead must let him “die with dignity” in a British hospital.

  • That's sad. I feel really sorry for them.
  • Jeez that's harsh.
  • Jesus, even if the doctors are right and the kid would still die, why do they fucking care? The off chance they get shown up by a U.S. doctor? That's bullshit. And if it were me I'd tell the government to go fuck itself.
  • That's utter stupidity at its finest.. as a nurse I find that totally disheartening.
  • Oh, you're the one guy still visiting Milo's website. So much I could say about that. I'm going to keep my mouth shut. No politics at NA.
  • Welcome to government healthcare.

Yeah thats what I was thinking.

Quoting any far right or far left site is most like sensationalized fake news. Just because its an article on the internet doesnt make it true.

Fair enough. I figured someone here from the UK would know something more about this story.

If the information is not true (hopefully it isn't) then I'd love to hear what did happen.

Bah I'm not reading all that. Is the story true or not? That is all I care about.

  • I could see the US Government saying no, but their own country is harsh. This looks to me like they're scared he might get saved and the EU doctors might look bad.

Doesn't know who Milo is, links article from a website named after him...hmmmm....

Anyways, if anyone is looking for a more even-handed article on the subject: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/04/03/terminally-boy-denied-potentially-life-saving-treatment-nhs/

In short: The baby was born with an extremely rare genetic disease that has caused severe neurological and muscular damage. The parents want to bring the baby to the US for an experimental treatment, which the doctor who would perform it even admits has a very small chance of success at prolonging the baby's life. The UK High Court (after being petitioned by the hospital the baby is at) blocked treatment on the grounds that taking the baby off life support to transport him to the US would inflict suffering that outweighs the chance of success the experimental treatment promises.

This is a pretty rough story, I can sympathize with both sides on this matter. I can't imagine what I'd do if I was in their shoes.

Link was in my facebook feed.

Someone else gave me grief about a link to Snopes that I posted because he didn't care for the supposed political leanings of that website.

Never knew debunking urban legends would be such a hot political topic.

Who cares where it comes from? Looking up every website to judge reader input first is way too much work. Either the story is true or not and from what you posted it sounds like it is true.

Sad sorry. In this case I think the parents should have had a say on how it ended.
  • This is a good example of why I don't trust doctors. They claim to take an oath to do no harm yet they let the terminally ill suffer instead of advocating a way out and they make a mint off the elderly being stored in nursing homes when most of them should have been allowed to go with dignity decades ago. My great grandma was 100 when she died in a home and for over 20 years of that she had no idea who she was and barely functioned.
  • Lol "die with dignity" That's rich, the world won't let anyone do that yet; gotta suffer until your dead. At least you can euthanize a pet that's horribly suffering. The way I see it it's your body, if you can't choose what you do with it..

But back on the topic, I don't see why they don't let it happen, gonna die either way, so what's the harm in attempting a treatment that may actually enable you to recover or provide the world with some more information on the matter.

This is the line we hear with abortion. It is a woman's body so she has the right. Yet as you say you can't end your own life and I get a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt.

    All to do with money.

In this case I honestly don't know enough. No idea why they just didn't let the parents do as they please.

  • The story is true. I honestly do not know who is right here, but it seems that even the US doctor involved claims this treatment would not "cure" him, but may or may not improve his brain function a little. "(Charlie) may be able to interact. To smile. To look at objects."

To me that does not sound like a hell of an improvement (which is not even assured), and making the baby to travel in those conditions would make him suffer significantly.

Either way, I would have to think about this... sometimes parents even when having the best intentions, may not be at their best in reasoning due to the mental distress... At the same time I don't know if there are established protocols on these situations that are backed up by thorough ethical and philosophical analysis. If a consenting adult could say "hell yes, I want that treatment even if chances are slim and I will suffer", no doubt, he is on his right to do so. But with an 8 month old baby, I don't know.

In abortion's case, it simply is that a fetus has no personhood, so it has no rights.
