Any good stories about bidding against the same mystery users on eBay?

Lately, I find myself bidding against the same eBay member a lot, and it's gotten to the point of absurdity.  I hate losing auctions over and over again to this member--I can't wait for one of us to move on to a new niche, haha.  Anyway, I actually do know who he is, but it's a huge tangent how and definitely not the point of this thread.  Anyway, you know the eBay obfuscated usernames?  Ever find yourself bidding against the same one repeatedly?  Anyone have any fun or frustrating stories?

Are you currently bidding on something I am? I've been bidding against the same person the past three days on everything.

  • I never even look at who outbid me. I just mentally put the item into my "someone was definitely willing to pay more than I was" column and move on.

Well if anyone on here is reading this that is bidding against me on Stuntracer 64 CIB please stop. I've been looking for this game in that condition for a VERY long time and you are just making it more expensive for me. So just cancel your bids ;p

  • There's a Stuntracer 64 CIB on eBay?

    *logs on*

    *bids furiously*

haha, I have a friend who is a member here, and we sometimes have to collude and decide who wants something more so we don't just bid against each other and make stuff more expensive

    On topic:

I never look at who won, what matters is whenever I win or lose. No point in knowing who is in a bidding war unless you take it personally.

The funny thing is more then likely I know the bidder as well. Going back over the years it would have easily been me but there has been a newer guy in place.

I know a few collectors that I've done the same tactic with, just to keep prices lower.  Hasn't happened for awhile though.

  • I used to bid for items, and one of my buddies (who I sometimes would collude with) also would bid on items, and we'd always be in competition with this guy from Japan. There's also a guy from Russia I'd sometimes have to go up against, as well as a collector from Korea. Sometimes it would just get frustrating, because you knew that if these people were bidding, prices were going to get insane. And although I also know the aforementioned collectors somewhat, aside from the Japanese guy (i.e. we dealt with each other before, not that we usually chat or anything), they would refuse to collude, preferring to duke it out on the field with money. So it definitely got to be annoying at times.

Edit:  Likewise, I am sure some people probably feel the same way, when they see me bidding on an item.  A lot of the times though, if I already have the item in my collection and not need to make an upgrade or something like that, a short message from the other person (if we've had dealings before, and I know they aren't just reselling or something) and I'll back off.
  • Happens all the time, used to bother me at first but now it doesn't. It's just captitalism, things go to the highest bidder.

I also don't collude with people, I believe the highest bid should win. If a person who I consider a true friend on here (handful of people) asked me to sit out an auction, then I probably would unless it was a really high priority for me. Otherwise if we're just acquaintances then we both should set our maxes and whoever wins wins.
  • I've definitely had this happen many times. It's frustrating, but then you know the other person is probably thinking the same exact thing. It can't be helped really, and it's just especially noticeable when you have some niche or specific interests.

For example, I have been collecting trade demos (mostly PS2), and there is someone else who I know is also, and it is like a battle between us to see who can get new ones when they pop up on ebay. Surprisingly, the trade demos don't really go for much despite being relatively hard to get.
  • I only notice a couple of resellers due to their high feedback. It's pretty frustrating.
  • I don't remember what the game was... but one time I found out I was bidding against my wife.

Do you happen to be bidding on Limited Run Items?
  • Ive only looked them up once. It was back when I NEVER knew sniping was a thing.
  • Beyond some re-sellers, I only have one story. Back in February this year on the Yamatoku-Classic eBay store they had up two unmarked Famicom Disk prototypes, two copies of Wakusei Aton Gaiden (arguably the rarest FDS game), the FDS Super Mario Sweater game, and a CIB copy of Gradius Archimedes. All up within the same 4 day period.

All of them, except for one of the copies of WAG, went to the same mystery user through sniping. After losing repeatedly, I put all of the Christmas money I got last year on both WAG copies and was able to get away with one of them for only $55 while the other one went to the mystery user for $220. Somewhat of a last laugh on my part.

I can understand market demand and whatnot with sniping, but I do think it takes a lot of the sport out of the game. I wish eBay would follow the Yahoo Japan Auction route of extending the timer when a notable last minute bid is placed.

Just to clarify, I'm not frustrated by the principle of being outbid...it's specific to this member.  There's a certain personal-ness to it, like "gah, you again?!"

That's true--he is probably thinking "this guy has cost me so much money..."

What's funny is that through an odd event, I actually know who this person is now, but I don't know if he knows who I am.  So, at least on my end, the mystery is removed.

ooh..that sucks. Another will pop up now after that one went for so much!

  • Yes, I have found out different people's usernames (and thus the number of feedback) through here, Facebook, or Reddit over the years, but it has never bothered me. It has given me a great depiction of how condition can mean a lot to value (e.g. Buyer X bids on everything while Buyer Y only bids on 9/10 and up). Also helps to tamper my expectations that I know there are other buyers out there looking for specific items, should such an item arrise. I don't get prematurely excited about winning an auction at a low price on a rare/expensive game anymore.
  • I lost a few cib snes auctions to this one user back in 08. They kept buying tons of the same shit it was driving me nuts. I started putting in my Max bid with 5 seconds left after awhile and I finally started winning and got myself a spike mcfang and zero the squirrel.

    *high five*  I hear ya!

  • I don't ever bid on ebay. I add an item to my watch list and then put in the max I'm willing to pay about 10 seconds from auction end. It doesn't make sense to bid back and forth on auctions these days. All it does is drive up the final price. You should simply wait until the end and bid what you're willing to pay.
  • This is not exactly the same thing, but I do have a short story.

I was bidding on a game that doesn't auction often but had two copies auctioning off ending within an hour of each other. I lost the first auction and realized that I was the third highest bidder. Surprise, surprise, on the second auction I was runner-up to the runner-up of the prior auction.
