Violin or Bass Guitar

Comments

  • If you already play guitar, bass would be fun and easy to pick up, and you can funk up all your favorite jams

Of course, you do already play erhu (which is awesome), so maybe violin wouldn't be much of a stretch. I have loved the erhu ever since I heard about them a few years ago.
  • If you've never played an instrument before, or aren't very musically inclined, go with bass. Violin is a very difficult instrument to learn, so if you don't have the patience or discipline, it's not going to be for you.

    Otherwise, violin.
  • With a bass, you'll end up getting more for your money. A couple hundred will buy you a much better bass (a somewhat cheap, but viable one) than a violin (absolute bottom barrel quality). Good violins (or any orchestral instrument), are very expensive.

Edit: And another thought, getting a voilin would also require that you get a bow, which are also not cheap. A bad violin + a bad bow = your neighbors thinking you're strangling cats.
  • I say violin, that way you can be NA's version of Lindsey Sterling. Her videos alone should make you want one.

Too late, NA aready has their version of Lindsey Sterling...me! Although I don't obnoxiously dance while a play.

Then you aren't NA's Lindsey Sterling...

Ok fair, I'm better than her then. The dancing, it's too distracting!

  • Guitar since you're not going to use a Violin for classical music.
  • If your gonna go cheap on an instrument, do it on an electric one. You better do the bass. All my instruments are high end except my bass - I paid less than $300 for the bass and a hard case.
  • Bass all the way ( fretless electric player here).
  • One of these days I need to get myself a violin.
  • Other: buy a didgeridoo; not only do they make a satisfying sound, they also make great decorations for a den or man cave.
  • Go violin.
  • Only nerds play bass. Do you really want to start being friends with a guy like ToxieRules?
  • A $200 bass is a lot nicer than a $200 violin.
  • If you already play piano and guitar, bass should be pretty easy.

Violin was the first instrument I ever learned and I played for about 5-6 years before moving on to guitar and drums. If you get a violin, you'll obviously need a bow unless you plan on doing nothing but staccato. You will also need violin rosin for the bow. If all else fails and you hate violin, you can at least use the bow on your guitars to pretend you're Jimmy Page.

Just based on the OP, I'd say bass is probably the better choice but ultimately the decision is yours.
  • Violin is tuned in 5th, and its a mindfuck if you're already used to instruments tuned in 4ths or similar to guitar.
