As far as originality, I personally would prefer a quiet, bright unit thats been modified to a noisy dim one.

I always felt the inherit value in kiosks was in the plastic portions, controller arms, marquee and console/monitor not the inner workings like the power supply and ballast.  I think having it work well trumps the original lighting ballast.

I definitely agree with you there man! If you get a minute and can point me in the direction of a good LED driver and strip i would really appreciate it. I will start looking as well. If i can get this wired up it will really make it look sharp.

Good to know about the PSU, makes total sense though, the new technology is so much more efficient.

  • I would pair a driver like this:

Intocircuit 30W Waterproof Superior Quality Aluminum Alloy LED Power Supply Driver LED Transformer 120 to 12 Volt DC Output, 6ft Cable https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FWO24US/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_6uXvzbC8DPE0B

.....With the LED strip of your choice. Phillips makes great ones. For a more yellow tone, get a lower color tempertaure like 2700k. Usually flourescent bulbs are much higher/colder like 4000k so get that if you want to match the original
  • Oh and coming out of the power supply to the existing ballasts should be a black wire (hot) and a white wire (neutral) and it should be a direct swap.
  • Yeah the ballast would be an easy replacement, as last time I checked similar ones can be purchased at Home Depot for under $10. Since it's 2 wires install should be a breeze. If you want to replace the speaker as well it isn't terribly difficult. Just need a torque wrench and a little patience. It's just a small subwoofer that is under $20 shipped on eBay.
  • Well this has turned into a fucking nightmare and paypal is being of no help to me at all.

I had put in a claim the day i got the kiosk because the seller had not told me about the non working controllers or the buzzing coming from the ow known ballast. At first i did not know the buzzing would be a simple fix i could do myself like you guys explained about the ballast. So i asked for a small amount of the money back to cover the costs via paypal claim to fix whatever the buzzing noise was, and get new controllers since multiple buttons are jammed shut.

Well Saturday night i noticed there are mother fucking ROACHES coming out of the machine and now in my fucking house.

I immediately contacted the seller and also paypal 3 times throughout the weekend to escalate/adjust the claim reason. No response from the seller.

And because i opened a case for the partial refund get this.

They don't care at all about the roaches and instead want me to take the kiosk to a repair shop to get a letter explaining the issues and what the cost will be!!! Because that is what the original claim was for.

The agent literally asked me why i felt uncomfortable doing this, and after explaining multiple times about the roaches and the potential health hazards, he still said to me, i am not being compliant and they won't side with me unless i get the repair letter.

I then said, can i have orkin or an exterminator instead come in and give me a written letter saying the roaches are coming from the machine because that is safer for me and i have to get an exterminator anyway. AND THEY STILL WANT THE REPAIR SHOP LETTER AND BILL AND EXPECT ME TO PUT THIS IN MY CAR!!!

As if a repair is even a concern at this point. I was on hold for 30 minutes just now for a manager and the call hung up.

I am so terrified of potential harm to my cats and now i have to relocate them so i can fumigate my home. I am absolutely devastated.

I don't know what i am gonna do, i have the machine wrapped in trash bags taped close to keep anymore from coming out of it.

And i have no idea how i am going to get this to a repair shop, not that there are really any near me anyway in the first place.

I have no problem eating the $300 shipping it is gonna cost to send it back but they don't care at all
  • Damn dude, definitely a nightmare scenario. I can't offer any help but I wish you the best of luck with getting this resolved. Stay safe :\

This is exactly why I try to air out gaming pick ups if I am not going to go through them and clean them immediately, especially if it more than just carts.

Why don't you take the kiosk to the garage or a shed and buy one of those sprays that you set off in the middle of a room? It would kill any bugs or roaches you would have. I can't remember what they are called. Not sure if this would harm the kiosk or the plastics.
  • I live in a condo and have no way to do anything with it. It is sitting in my house right now triple wrapped in trash bags all taped and sealed shut.

I can't believe paypal doesn't give a fuck about this at all, or that anyone could actually sell something like this. If i lose this i will never use paypal again. I spend thousands a year and this is how they want to treat people?

I now have to hope and pray i can either somehow get this to someone who can write me a letter, which is not easy since i am disabled. Or hope and pray someone i know on NA or through other gaming circles can write one for me using my videos explaining that the ballast is junk.

I am still going to get the letter from the exterminator if possible but according to paypal without the repair letter, i might be boned even with the exterminator letter WHICH IS ALL THAT SHOULD BE FUCKING NEEDED. It is fucking criminal that roaches are not reason enough to warrant a return.

I am so stressed out to begin with with my health since it has been on the decline, i am just at a loss for words...................Sorry for all the swears and hostility. I am just so frustrated

Thanks for the support i do appreciate it
  • Future advice, open up machines outside and check for bugs beforehand, a lot of people are nasty and this can be a common occurrence with old hardware.

are the sellers still considered nasty if they just picked it up and flipped it? Or if it was outside in a garage in some kinda storage? These items tend to attract bugs unless if you prevent it. My arcades tend to get spiders

Spiders are one thing but i would open up all machines i buy regardless, i am not the person who flips things but if i was, i would still open the thing and if it had a pest i would clean it up first. No one wants roaches in their house.

You are right. The stuff I buy if it's from a collector I usually don't have to clean it but otherwise it gets full attention
  • I can't open this thing until tomorrow outside with the help of my dad.

But does anyone know if the system can be removed? There is a silver bar holding it in place.

I am sure it can be removed, but i can't get at the machine since it is bagged until tomorrow.

I want to open the system because i am sure that is where they are. And was hoping to get an idea beforehand of how it comes out and how to get the silver bar off.

    Thanks
  • So, Im not asking to be snide or to make light of Magus' issue... but... are roaches in hardware really as big a problem (or rather as common a problem) as it seems to be? I see this kind of thing around here all the time, yet I have never had an issue with them in hardware *knock on wood*

Some gross people own/horde great items and this happens. Plus roaches love places to hide, any place they can fit.

Trust me when i say this is pretty common. When buying consoles it is a good idea to tie it in a bag till you can open it up.
  • All it takes is a roach or two to make your life miserable if not taken care of. They hide in electronics all the time, game systems no exception.

I have an RGB modded NES sitting in a shipping box because i am waiting until tomorrow so i can open it outside. I never did before because i have always been lucky i guess.

I never thought it would happen to me, but of course here we are........And of course, they are German roaches.
  • Well, i managed to bomb the ever living shit out of the machine and clean it up real good inside and out. I also had roach bait/systemic killer in the bag for days with the machine. No other roaches were in the unit....

I have not seen another roach since i first saw the 2 of them a few days ago, and i have plugged, sealed, and spray foamed every single nook and cranny of my condo to keep everything out.

Hopefully i caught the issue quick enough, or that there were only those 2 hitchhikers in the unit, but just in case, i am harassing my condo association to have an exterminator come check the building out to make sure.

I am also going to try and place roach poison/traps in places where i know my cats can't reach.

As for the Kiosk, i have a feeling i am going to get fucked by Paypal. They are giving me a hard time already and have been completely useless so far. I am hoping to be able to get the necessary paperwork to get the case sided in my favor, but just in case i am also listing it for sale locally, with the hope i can recoup some of my money. Shipping it back is going to cost me $300 of it anyway. Mind as well give someone local a chance to buy it.

I honestly just am not sure if anyone is even going to want it knowing it had a roach issue :/ Even though it was taken care of. I know i would be hesitant and i have no interest in keeping it now. But i wouldn't feel right not letting them know....

Hopefully paypal sides with me and i can just send it back.

Bugs problems shouldn't have anyone shy away?  Bugs are waiting for the human race to fade away

I am sure there are many people that won't care, especially since i seem to have rectified the problem. I just am OCD and it freaks me out and i will always wonder if more are gonna crawl out one day. Irrational i know, but OCD/Anxiety suck.......

And the two people so far interested were instantly uninterested when i mentioned the pest issue :/

  • Honestly dude, don't even mention it to a potential buyer. You took care of the issue and if it wasn't for your irrational thoughts (Lord knows I have em too sometimes) it would be perfectly fine. You did what you needed to to resolve the pest problem. What the next person doesn't know won't hurt em. Just imagine if the prior owner took care of the issue then you would be none the wiser. Don't even bring it up.

What I'm beyond words... mine was in a legit barn. Seller showed me how bad it was at first and I'll be honest I didn't take it all the way down.

But like you said everyone is different I just can't imagine many ways that these kiosks don't  get at least a couple bugs in them over the years.

Yea obviously this seller isn't a dbag. You know I had a seller sell me a pinball machine without telling me it went down a flight of stairs. It's all on your ethics
