Thoughts on selling SNES games and getting an SD2SNES?

I have had a Mega Everdrive for the Genesis for a couple years and have been happy with it but I have never been a big Sega fan so I was easy to please. I, then, ran out of shelf space a few months ago and replaced my loose NES carts with a N8 - zero regrets. I am now pondering doing the same with my SNES carts and buying a SD2SNES.

I really don't want to spend $200 on a flash cart and regret it so I have a couple questions for the NA community yet again:

I have seen incompatability lists. Are these lists games that simply don't run or a broad list of games that have issues?

Anybody have a NTSC only incompatability list?

The SD2SNES has been out for quite some time. Is this as gooda hardware as we are going to get or does anybody think there may be a better flash cart in the near future?

Thanks.

  • SD2SNES is the best one out now, I am not a fortune teller so I can't tell you if a better one will come. The games that don't run have special chips that aren't easy to replicate such as the super fx chip
  • The SD2SNES is the top flash cart right now, and it's compatibility is great. There are a lot of FX chips that don't work, and those lists are usually of games that do not work. Mario rpg being a big one that comes to mind.

Worst case you can always resell the flash cart, they hold their value. Hold onto your carts for a while so you can see if the flash cart is what you want. Then sell your carts.

It also loads incredibly fast which is a huge plus. Wish the interface looked cooler than just a list of titles, but you can't have it all.
  • That's what I did and then I just collect manuals, bc I love the artwork etc
  • IIRC there is a incompatibility list on the Krikzz forums.

Search smokemonster SNES good list for a good starting point for ROMs.
  • Probably a smart move, i will take my stuff to the grave.

I do not have a SD2SNES but i will get one later this year, one of the best designed flashcarts on the market and compatibility is very good.
  • I highly recommend the SD2SNES. It loads games quickly, has a nice interface, and the incompatibility list is short. https://sd2snes.de/blog/compatibility The price hasn't budged on the SD2SNES since it was released, even the bootleg and used ones on eBay are close to new prices. The SD2SNES has worked on every console I've tried, including clones.

I also recommend checking out the MSU-1 hacks. They are very impressive. The lack of CD quality music was the only real flaw with the SNES and the SD2SNES fixes that.
  • SD2SNES is the tits. I bought a Super Powerpak 5 years ago. Talk about regrets... I haven't seen it necessary to replace my Powerpak yet, but I did buy a SD2SNES about 3 years ago during the group buy and it's been great. I own copies of Star Fox, SMRPG, Kirby Super Star, and Yoshi's Island so it basically plays everything else I could hope for.
  • another fan here of the SD2SNES.... tons of great games, smooth interface and awesome menu. I bought one and haven't looked back!
  • I have SD2SNES and no complaints. I own the few games it doesn't play which keeps my total physical SNES collection to a minimum on the shelf (right around 25 carts including the SD2SNES). Plus if the SD2SNES ever takes a crap, I have 20+ of my favorites to play. I also like the fact that it will play some fan made rom hacks.
  • i just bought a club nintendo snes wii controller and emulate snes via wii. its awesome and no compatibility issues. it plays everything.

oh btw the controller will cost you $60 shipped but its cheaper than a flash cart.
  • I just took out a small loan to buy an SNES private sale via CraigsList...
  • You know I never thought about this... but that's a great idea... sell my carts (as I can play them all in various different ways), take the $$ and scoop up Boxes and Manuals as they are fun to look at / collect, and the Artwork is nostalgic...
(Now the only problem is my emotional attachment to the carts)

  • Sd2snes is great, if you want access to every game just buy physical carts of the games that don't run, aka mario kart. I have a few everdrives and I'm going to be selling most of my games except the ones I really like.
  • Mario Kart runs on my Sd2snes.
  • I've had mine for two years and love it! I have given thought to selling my SNES carts as well, with the exception of the ones that won't play and my Mega Man/ Metroid games.
  • I bought one last year and sold my snes games, I haven't regretted it one bit. The snes isn't my fav console however, thats the nes and in that instance I kept the carts even after buying my Everdrive.
  • As people have said, just keep the games that aren't compatible and sell the rest.
  • Since buying my SD2SNES, I haven't bought another SNES game. Same can be said for just about any cart bases system since I have a flash cart for nearly all of them. However, I haven't been able to pull the trigger on selling what I already own. A lot of it was owned from my childhood, and if I ever decided to sell, my original games from my childhood would be the absolute last to go. It's a tough call for sure. Now would be a great time to sell AS LONG AS you are sure you won't want to buy them back again later.
  • I think you guys talked me into it. I only have 55-60 carts but they will get listed on NA...

Any flash cart capable of running Super FX, SDD-1, and etc?  I'd buy an SD2SNES and something else if they had compatibiliy with these extra chips.

Oh and being able to MSU-1 on a real SNES is awesome...

not that I know of. Ive heard it's possible for the SD2SNES to do it eventually because it's an FPGA and it just needs an update that allows it. But I'm not sure if that's still within the realm of possibility or if they're even working on it. Most people buy the SD2SNES and then just buy the carts that don't run on it. I think the only major ones are Mario RPG, Yoshi's Island, Star Fox, Kirby Super Star and Kirby's Dream Land 3. Nothing overly expensive except maybe Kirby 3

Bummer.  I know my Super Wild Card SX2 64MB won't run Super Mario RPG and I have no idea if it will run those others you mentioned either.  I can continue to emulate but if I can acquire a Framemeister or one of the other higher end upscalers I would prefer to use one of my SNESes.
