It's time for a confession: I love Nintendo Games! I love listening to gaming soundtracks! But...

... don't like most OSTs for Nintendo games when I attempt to listen to them outside of their respective games.

I can't explain it.  There are a ton of games out there, across various genres, that I can listen to while I work and I simply enjoy them playing in the background.  Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, any Final Fantasy game, most CAPCOM games from the NES as chiptunes, Mr. Bones (which is an awesome, mostly-unknown OST), practically every single Sonic game and MANY others.  These are all great and remain in frequent rotation!

However, very consistently I can't listen to Nintendo's tunes as ambient music.  The really odd thing is that I do like their music for pretty much every Nintendo game but it has to be playing within the game.  Who doesn't like pretty much every single SMB tune?  I sure do.  How about Zelda?  All classics!  But as soon as I start trying to listen to them outside of their respective games... they start to annoy me.  I wish this weren't true and I have no clue why it IS true.  Alas, it is.

The only exception that I can think of is Super Metroid, and Metroid in general.  Not sure what's different about that one but it is one I do enjoy listening to from time to time.  Anyway, I'm posting this just to see if anyone else feels this way.  I honestly hate to admit it because, as I stated, I love this music within these games and Nintendo's melodies can certainly get stuck in your head in a good way.  But, outside of their designed intent they just aren't enjoyable to me.

Anyone else feel this way, or am I alone?

  • ... because it's just a loop? I love Super Mario music, too.... but it only takes about 1 minute to beat each level, after that it switches up. Why you'd want to listen to the same loop is beyond me.

The music is great when you're playing because there's other sounds that go with it. Take those away and you're left with a never ending loop of bleeps and bloops. Which wouldn't be awful by any means but not really suitable for soothing ambient music I wouldn't think.
  • I kind of hear your point, but some of my favorite chiptunes run on short loops. DuckTales and Batman, for instance, are really good and as I mentioned, I like Sonic games, though I think their loops might be a tad longer. Also, this seems to be true for all of Nintendo's games, including OoT and I even tried to give Skyward Sword a chance. It's better than old NES tunes, but even that doesn't feel great.
  • Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2

    Yoshi's Island

Even Super Mario World. I love listening to them.
  • Punch Out

    Mother

    Super Mario Kart
  • I've not given Earthbound/Mother a chance since I've never played them, even on an emulator. Maybe they will buck the trend... and while I'm at it, I should probably check out the Fire Emblem games. Otherwise though, the above games just don't do it for me either.
  • The soundtrack for Mother has a LOT of gems, but they're thoroughly mixed with a lot of skippable stuff.
  • I'm listening to the SNES one right now. Not bad. Definitely good for Nintendo, and I've added it to my long list of bookmarked OSTs on YouTube.

    Thanks for the recommendation!
  • Some OSTs are good out-of-context, and some aren't; this applies to individual tracks as well.
