The Hunt more exciting than The Purchase?

I hope that most of you still search for games in the wild. I know that it's depressing not to find things sometimes, but isn't it just AWESOME when you do?

I love hunting for games and other nuggets.

.....but here's my question....

Considering price... what do you do when you finally find something cool or interesting that you might not particularly want in the wild? It doesn't need to be a DEAL does it?

Sometimes I find myself buying things just as a trophy for the day so that when I see that game on my shelf I can say "I found that". Ebay is a good friend to me too, but please don't forget the hunt. Thoughts?

  • Yeah I still enjoy the hunt just for the thrill of it, which is why I still try to hit up the yard sales and swap meets every weekend.  I'd say to me the hunt is probably equally as fun as the purchase.  Might not be able to find as much for what I'm collecting as in years past, but the act of simply searching for them is still fun to me.   If anything, now that finds are more scarce it makes it all the more thrilling when I do find something.

To your second question, yes I will pick up finds even for game systems I'm not collecting if its a great deal.  I have actually started new collections from doing this.  In recent years PS2 has been one example.  I guess in the end I just buy and collect for whatever games are readily available and seem cool to me.
  • I mostly gave up on looking for games in the wild as finds became much less frequent and mostly modern games turn up now. Back when I could go to the flea market and I knew I'd come back with a backpack full of games no matter what, the hunt was definitely fun. It wasn't whether I would find games, it was whether I was going to find something great in the games I did find. Spending a Sunday morning at the flea market or making the thrift store circuit and coming back with absolutely nothing is way less fun.

I still like "hunting" for rare items online, but going through my Ebay saved searches every morning to see if the weird variant I'm looking for finally turned up sure isn't as fun as a flea market.
  • I'm in line with DefaultGen on this one. Mostly the thrill of the hunt is in my past as it is pretty dry around here and my wants have become very specific. I'll check my saved searches, but I have a good idea where most of the things I'm looking for are ... (you know who you all are!   )

The purchase is my new excitement. Knowing I've got something I've wanted on the way is more exciting now than trying to go around town and look/hope for stuff.
  • I love the hunt but theres not much out there these days. 10+ years ago the hunt was exciting
  • Lol I can't even "hunt in the wild"... all the stores that sell video games are so far away and flea markets here suck. If I find anything video game related in flea markets it's all in terrible condition or eBay prices (for peeps sake people it's a flea market not an online store).
  • Absolutely. I don't do much locally but the constant search online for a deal is where the fun is.

I had more luck on eBay than in retail stores ironically, a lot of good games can be purchased way under the retail price if you search for auctions or sellers who actually consider your offers and don't just send a $0.90 discount as a counteroffer everytime.
  • My hunting is on ebay. Driving around for 8 hours on a saturday is such a huge waste of time for me nowadays.

10 years ago it was worth it.

like recently? Maybe I'll start hunting on eBay again
  • No, I value my time too much.

I'd rather be doing something else....I mean if you find a good deal while you are out and about sure, sweet.
  • Oh yeah, the hunt is easily the best part. Nothing is more exciting than happening upon a random garage sale and seeing a stack of games hidden somewhere. Doesn't happen as often as it use to, but you just have to look for the newer games now. I could pick up pretty much any game at asking price, but I love the thrill of searching for a good deal.
  • I love the hunt.
