Getting the most out of the Wii

I'm mainly an NES collector, but I got a Wii a few months back so the kids could play some fun games, and I could have access to the GC and Wii Zelda games.  Now I'm wondering if there are any "must haves" to upgrade the performance.  I've already gone ahead and got the component cables, the pro controller, and the Wii motion plus Wiimote...

Is there anything else I should get?

  • You must install the Homebrew Channel on your Wii if you want to unlock its true potential, like loading Wii/GC games off a USB hard drive to preserve your discs and drive, homebrew programs/games/emulators, mod packs for Wii games, etc... Just google around for the steps required, or PM me. Wii softmods aren't particularly complicated at all.

As for hardware, you should always keep around a regular Wiimote, no motion plus built-in, some software behaves oddly with the motion plus in use. Sounds like you have most of the things required though. Just get to playing some games, there's tons of good ones on Gamecube and to a slightly lesser extent, the Wii.
  • It's not a must have but maybe you can get a wireless sensor bar because I hate dealing with the long thin wire of the original. It doesn't require a dongle to be connected to the Wii, just a couple of batteries. And in case you have a Wii U it will work for both consoles at the same time.
  • In my experience, the Classic Controller "Pro" has issues the standard Classic Controller doesn't have.

All of mine are authentic and I’ve taken them apart.

  • As Guntz said I think Homebrew is a must. You can then put pretty much any game or emulator on there as well as other games like Mega Man 9 and 10.

Wii is also a great console for light gun games if that interests you at all.
  • If by upgrade performance you mean hardware, then I think that has been answered. If by upgrade you mean what games would make it a better experience then here are some recommendations

    Geometry wars galaxies

    Ivy the kiwi

    Little kings story

    Mario kart Wii

    Mario strikers charged

    Wii play
  • I have used my Wii a lot and the games I play most are:

    - all Lego games

    - Klanoa

    - Super Mario games

    - Acme Arsenal

    - Ghostbusters

    - Smooth Moves
  • Softmod it and install USB Loader and Nintendon't along with the plethora of emulators for it. I suggest using a Hard Drive 500GB or more if you have a lot of games for the Wii/GC.

If you have any interest in light gun games, keep an eye out for the Nyko Perfect Shot attachment. Best light gun accessory for the Wii.

huh. never thought about that. Ive had a bunch of wii games stop working, the discs are very fragile.

can I do that with a wii mini?
  • Not currently. The Wii Mini had every traditional exploit vector removed, namely the SD card slot. There's a small possibility another exploit may be found, but given the lack of interest in the Wii Mini, you'd be better off buying an original Wii.

With the right software (namely Nintendont), you can even get your Wii softmods on with the RVL-101 revision. That's the Wii with the missing Gamecube ports. If you need HDMI, get a Wii U, the Wii System Menu embedded in it is fully hackable like a regular Wii.
  • Oooh, that's interesting about the WiiU. Maybe I'll do that
  • The best part about putting nintendont on the Wii U for playing Gamecube games is the Smash 4 Gamecube controller adapter is supported. With a hacked Wii U, you can play almost any game from any Nintendo console up to the Wii U, with either emulation or native hardware support.
  • I don't suppose stuff like the GBA link cable are compatible huh?
  • GBA to GC link cable is compatible with the Wii and Wii U if it has a GC controller port available.
  • Is that just for using a GBA as a controller?
  • You can use the GBA as a controller with the GBA adapter, but there's other things you can do. Trade Pokémon from GBA to Colosseum or XD, Wind Waker uses it for the tingle tuner, and I'm drawing a blank on others but it works with a few games

    Edit: here's a list https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_GameCube_
  • Tingle Tuner?
  • In certain areas of Zelda the wind waker, you can control tingle with a gba linked to the GameCube, doing this allows for finding items and what not.

Pac man vs is compatible with the gba to GC link cable, apparently it's very good.

Zelda four swords adventures requires gba to gc link cables and consoles if playing with 2 - 4 players.

The game boy player supports using the GBA as a controller, but obviously this doesn't apply to the wii and wii u.
