Anyone else collect label variants with only minor changes?

I have been getting most of my NES games by buying lots and keeping what I dont have and trading off what I already have...

I keep one of each game and I have been keeping one of each of the screw variants but lately I have been noticing small changes in labels. I dont mean like King of Kings but rather things like the seal on one cart might be white while it is black on another....

or Super Mario/Duck Hunt with a line or without...

Anyone else keep one of each for your collection or am I alone on this? And is there any resource that may have listings of the different label variants of each game?

Thanks everybody!

  • I do if I notice it or know of it, but I do not go out of my way to look for them.
  • I think there is a master list with most known variations. I don't know where it exactly is, but I think someone could probably retrieve it for you. Be careful though, don't want to stretch yourself too far with collecting everything. I did that for a bit and got burnt out pretty quick.

Thats good advice.. I have only been collecting for about a year and a half or so and I only have about 275 carts so I still have tons of games that I dont even have one copy of. I think for now I am not going to go out of my way to get a game that I already have but if I happen to get one I am going to hold on to it rather than trade/sell it.

I started taking a picture of every cart I have on my DSi so will have pictures of everything with me if I ever go out game hunting. Variants like the screw variants and the cart color wisdom tree variants are ones that I really want to get as many as possible but with the label ones I think I will seek those out more once my collection is bigger.
  • Yes, when I was collecting I would grab seal variants as you described. The brighter "white" logo is the newer release and the older circle one represents an original.

It's not just labels, it goes with boxes too:

(Neither of those are FS btw, before someone PMs me)
  • I have all Flintstones 2 carts, PAL A, B and NTSC. All of them have differences in lables.
  • Anyone have a link to that list that Dr. Robbie mentioned?
  • I compiled info for a long time about this, but gave up after a while and sold all my dupes. I collected every little difference in seal, text, etc on the front label. When my variant collection matched my nearly-complete NTSC collection in quantity, I knew it was time to just thin things out image

  • Absolutely. I'll even write your name in the credits on the intro page image .
  • Didn't know you were making that Matt, I have a lot of games I think you don't yet, I can check since I too collect those variants. I'll let you know if I find any.
