Fake NES mini appearing

  • I disagree, I think bootleg NES Classics does hurt Nintendo. First, should Nintendo wish to reproduce NES Classics in the future, bootlegs will hurt them because legit customers with bootlegs may not know they have a bootleg, and others who know they have a bootleg and who just want to play may give Nintendo the finger for producing so few in the first place. Secondly, people may also decide to wait for cheaper bootleg SNES Classics. Thirdly, it cheapens the name brand. Ultimately, I do think this is Nintendo s doing for producing so few.

I have never seen fanboys so salty over something like that damn NES classic.

All I mean is that they deserve to have someone cash in for serving their customer base. Obviously this doesn't take away from Nintendo. This is one of the few cases I'll endorse a bootleg product since I know so many people that still want one. Your petty comments are unneeded.

I wasn't even referring to you.

I stand by my comment, never have I seen so many people butthurt that they couldnt get a classic. All it is surrounding it online complaints.

Bootlegging is bad for everyone, no matter how you justify it.

I thought the '^^^' were referring to my comment. I agree that there are a lot of sour grapes, but I think people are still justified in this situation to bitch and complain. There is no denying that Nintendo did a piss poor job with the NES Classic release even if compaints can be overshadowed by entitlement/salt. Basically Nintendo is asking for bootlegs by ending the production when demand remains so high. It will be too bad as you know these will be sold as 'authentic' to some unsuspecting buyer.

Anyway, sorry for being sharp/defensive. Maybe I need a break but I feel the atmosphere is slowly changing on this forum. Seems like there is so much bickering and cynicism on here lately.

I see how it could have been misread. I was really laughing at the idea of people cheering on a bootleg that is obviously represented as real- because they are upset at a company for not making enough of something they want.

And all forums have bickering, its what nerds do on the internet about shit they like. Plenty of other positivity around here to get caught up in.
  • Screw nintendo for their mishaps. And then making switches impossible to find. Ive all but jumped ship to sony as a gamer and collector. Doesnt mean i will sell my existing nintendo collections but i certainly wont play into their false demand game. Good for you china, for once you impress me.
  • Maybe the SNES ones will arrive before Nintendo releases theirs. hahaha

The main question is, can it be modded to play all NES games like the original classic mini.
  • I'm pulling the trigger for this one. Might as well get it seeing I will never get the real mini at least for a couple of years at those prices.
  • Anyone try one of these yet?

    $45 shipped on Ebay.

Hmmm. Looks like composite instead of HDMI.

  • Y'all please let me know where you're buying this for a reasonable price!
  • Love how the box in the OP says "Nintendo Classic Mini," which is what everyone calls the NES Classic Edition anyway (note: actual product is not called "mini").
  • Composite, this is just too funny.
  • Why do they bother to approximate Nintendo's menu?

How hard would it be to build a clone

$26 from Aliexpress - if you're going to buy bootleg crap. Don't over pay resellers.

    ::facepalm emoticon::
  • I ended up getting a bootleg Famicom Mini today, I had a chance about two months ago to get a bootleg Famicom mini (boxed) but sadly passed it up, since I was short on cash then.

    Thoughts and information:

The stuff seems to be made by Cool Baby, the guys that made the 400 in 1 Famicom cartridge. Website here:

    http://www.szrenshun.com

On another note, I have no idea why a collector would want a fake one of these, it would only be a market for gamers, imo. Collectors already have most of these games, and would have no real reason to play them on this machine. They only want it since Nintendo paid homage to the classics, which they are collecting. But a fake version of it defeats the point, imo, since it would fall into the same realm as a fanmade product, imo.

I think they're just buying it out of spite

  • Will the Chinese clone of the SNES mini hit the market before Nintendo's?

No because they have to make copies of the system/controller molds and smuggle them out of Nintendo factories to bootleg.

    Composite!

How hard would it be to build a clone – with the same off-the-shelf SoC Nintendo is using – and ACTUALLY run Nintendo's interface without any modification? Obviously the pirates and counterfeiters don't care about copyright or they wouldn't put the illegitimate NES games on there.

seems like unnecessary extra work for them. I wonder if these can be hacked to actually run Nintendo's interface

I don’t see how it would be extra work.  It would Actually be far less work than building a look-alike from scratch.

I mean unnecessary work to build one from scratch, when they can just use the one Nintendo developed. Since as you said piracy isn't of their concern

    Ah. Yes.

I think NES Classic had a common cheap ARM-based System-on-chip that’s used in lots of cheap phones and tablets. It’s very likely these clones are also ARM based, so maybe someone could put Nintendo’s actual menu on it.
  • OP: Thanks for quoting my NeoGAF post on this topic. I've been trying to follow Google, eBay, and YouTube super-closely the last day or two to see if any more menu/gameplay footage makes its way out there.

The item with the Chinese-looking package that TENGEN posted about is, of course, not the device the OP is about. That cheaper clone has been around for months and there are several YouTube reviews of it. It's just an NES-on-a-chip with a hard-wired "300-in-1" multicart ROM. The controllers use Atari VCS/Genesis connectors for some bizarre reason. The only thing it would be useful for is its shell, which looks to be a decent approximation of the original, and could probably be co-opted pretty easily for use as a micro-PC/Pi Zero case.

The proper NES Mini clones showing up are, as shown in the OP, devices with the same underside text, HDMI out, USB-micro-powered, and the same type of Wii Remote/Nunchuk/Classic Controller connectors as the real unit. It also boots to a real menu with a bonus funky boot screen. Based on what we have seen thus far, they've done a half-decent job replicating the Nintendo product, which is why I suspect collectors would be livid to end up with one of these after ordering what appeared to be, in photos, an original unit. I only wonder about why the game demonstration footage released by the manufacturer is rendered in 16:9 instead of 4:3 like the NES Mini even though they claim it uses the same "kachikachi" emulator as the official NES unit. Did the NES Classic Edition have a secret flag uncovered in hakchi that allowed for 16:9 stretching, or is this a sign of something being "up" (I'd almost gamble on the latter, myself)?

Anyway, first post, glad to be here, thanks for having me. Have a great weekend!

  • Not surprised.

    Great thread/resource. Thank you.
  • Pictures courtesy of obirux and Bebop from Famicom World

The system has a completely different board and so far seems to be difficult to hack as it uses its own software. It shows up with a USB logo when connected to a PC though but will not connect to Hakchi.  They also used different pinned controller ports so official controllers won't work nor will aftermarkets, only their proprietary ones. It also has emulation speed issues and sound problems like any poorly crafted clone would.

  • Maybe Nintendo should have had these people make it so that it couldn't be hacked.
  • Disappointing update on the clone. Looks like I won't be purchasing one after all.
  • So glad I got an actual NES Mini so I'd not have to worry about this lol.
  • The sad part is sellers are listing these on eBay as authentic and people are paying high prices for them. They will end up very sad when they see the massive issues it has, and that it cannot be hacked.
