I think it has a lot to do with who you learn from. My group has taught a few beginners who now play at our level(kitchen table casual mostly). I'm fortunate enough to have a lot of close friends who all kind of got into it at the same time. I'm not sure how one person would learn by themselves, outside of just hanging out at a game store and talking to the regulars.

I downloaded the free demo of "Magic 2015" on xbox 360 and fiddled with it this afternoon (had off).  It was pretty helpful in understanding the basic mechanics of the game.  Now off to the comic shop!

That's a great way to learn! Also there's Magic Online and for sure it must have a tutorial as well, actually I found it easier to learn the finer points of the game by playing Magic Online.

Dug out my old decks the other night, and feel some playing coming soon. Anyone else playing any of the new cards? I haven't bought any in about two years.

Yeah I have bought boosters of the last 3 expansions....Going to pick up my Hour of Devestation booster box that releases tomorrow.

I played in the pre-release sealed tourny last weekend too and got about 13 boosters a week before the set came out.

I started in 3rd grade, which would have been maybe 1994-1995, which looking back seems like the early days of Magic. I missed Alpha, and Beta and all of that but I remember buying Ice Age and Fallen Empires. Continued to play through 8th grade.

Didn't play for the next what 15, 17 years until over the last year I've actually ended up playing a small handful of times. Close friend of mine has a friend group that plays, so I've joined in for drafting (where we all start with three booster packs or something like that, open it take a card and pass the deck, to make 40 card decks). It takes forever to start a game, and we end up playing for 6 or more hours at a time, but its fun seeing how the game has developed and the way that each set has a firm "theme". The most recent one we played was a riff on ancient Egypt and many of the Zombie cards were White instead of the typical black, which was a neat conceptual twist

Awesome dude, good to know! The only thing that pisses me off about MTG is if you want to keep up with it, you gotta spend atleast like $50-$100 per expansion, which is what, every 3 months? Lol.

I like playing with all my old cards and making crazy decks. I never go into tournament or FNM, though! I hate not being able to play certain cards. I like chaos and big green monsters with mana ramping!
