Yeah, any disdain I've heard about Linkin Park was either people not liking their new stuff or not caring for nu metal in general. I can find tons of people that like Linkin Park; I wouldn't put them anywhere near Nickelback for disliked bands.
That was my take on it. Hearing people say they were NEVER well received blew me away. And then comparing to nickelback was just the icing on the cake.
I think daring to compare me against Patrick is a much worse crime
People insult my favorite (Alice in Chains) all the time, but I don't take it personally. I'm guessing this is the not the first rib of the sort that you have endured
How does anyone insult Alice in Chains. If nothing else, their Unplugged album was the best, Down in a hole is better than the studio track.

I would certainly hope you are thick skinned enough to take a playful spongebob joke about living under a rock Especially after your claims about LP never being well received. I am really not looking to have a metal competition, or sure of how that even has anything to do with anything lol But whatever makes you sleep at night.
Time and place, i'll leave it at that. And no lol i have never gotten ribs about this. Because not a single person i know makes fun of LP. At least not early LP.
Oh boy... I'd rather listen to Linkin Park than Alice in Chains ANY day.
wow, we have totally different musical tastes
that is an insane statement imo . No disrespect to the point of the thread but linkin park doesnt even touch alice in chains. Im not some huge alice in chains fan or anything, but I like them enough.
I think the last time I listened to linkin park voluntarily was like 8th grade. Thats where their music should stay. Middle school
Sad to hear someone killed themselves. If this bummed someone out like when cornell did to me a few weeks ago then that sucks. Linkin park singer had talent Ill give him that. I think the thing I didnt like about the band was the other singer dude who raps and the whole dj record scratching type stuff. Wasnt my thing
Actually, you'd think I like stuff like Alice in Chains. I listen to a lot of doom and black metal. No matter how hard I tried, I could never get into it.
It sold well, so? People shit on Linkin Park constantly and have since day one. Them and Nickelback. They sell lots of records. Tons of people like them... but all you hear is shit talk.
One story that stuck with me, I heard back when Hybrid theory came out Adam Corolla was talking about them... This was around the same time Harvey Danger had just come out with "flagpole sitta", and both groups had recently been on Loveline to promote their albums. Adam was talking about how cool and humble Chester and Linkin Park were in contrast to what arrogant assholes Harvey Danger were, he predicted that based on their attitudes alone Linkin Park would have a successful career and Harvey Danger would be one-hit wonders.
I played the shit out of Hybrid Theory and Meteora 9 years ago. I was 17 then, and used to jam that shit to in-house Starcraft games with my friends that frequently spanned all night. I don't like the rest of their albums that much, but those two still have a soft spot for me.
As an aside, I feel like LP, despite the flak they get, were one of the few bands to actually do nu metal right. I don't think the genre itself would be experiencing nearly as much stigma now if more bands tried to innovate like that.

I enjoyed what they did (and still do) but I feel like it was too niche. Like, exactly what they were doing. The big stuff was in going heavy and all out. Slipknot is still going strong to this day... still representing Nu-metal.
Linkin Park was the best at what they did... but I think most failed when they tried to do it. Balancing that pop with rock and somewhat metal was just hard for people to get right. They had the balance that the fans of the heavy could enjoy but also had enough melody that the fans of pop and rock could get behind. It was a tough ground to cover.
To that front, I get what you mean about Linkin Park. To me, they weren't really 'special' in the sound they did but in the sense of how well they did it. Others tried but failed. And generally I gravitated towards the more metal focused groups.
Edit: One thing I've always noted about Linkin Park is that none of their albums seem like albums... they all seem like a Greatest Hits compilation. They never fucking let up. I remember watching the Minutes to Midnight behind the scenes dvd and they talked about recording 100+ songs and deciding on those... and that's what they did. God damn that's a work ethic. I release like... almost everything I record.
It sold well, so? People shit on Linkin Park constantly and have since day one. Them and Nickelback. They sell lots of records. Tons of people like them... but all you hear is shit talk.
This news sucks to hear. I've always been an LP fan. Even as they got more popular and people started shitting on them. If you look at their videos on YT the views are always in the millions. Some even in the hundred millions. The haters defintely dicked everybody down but they are a much loved band. His death I'm sure has something more to do with his past rather than online tough guys talking shit.

Definitely, and that was my point throughout even though certain people don't want to see that. I was just commenting on what someone else had said. Much worse was said about the band and him than what I commented on. It sucks my few comments about that were focused on.

I heard a similar story about Eve6 being total dicks on their first tour...
Ah man, a lot of bands are dicks at some point. I remember there was a guy (my high school friend was in his band), and he absolutely loved AFI. He said he got to a show and was backstage, he saw Davey, tried to speak but he completely shrugged him off. It sucks that happens sometime. But they're people. I've had off days with people I know. One show I went to, I was a friend of the band, the guitar player/vocalist walked right by me. I didn't try to say anything to her. Then later on the drummer walked out with her (this was all before the show and people were waiting in line), he stopped and stopped her too. He had a full conversation with me because he knew me from shows in Memphis and now I was in Portland. And he was like 'How did you not see this guy? Come on?'. Later on in the night she was preoccupied with other stuff, I went back to the drummer, told him it was awesome seeing and hanging out with them again, and I looked forward to seeing them again.
So heartbroken all day. My heart really did dropped hearing that this wasn't fake news and it did happen. I couldn't function at all. Really angry but sad at the same time, especially for his family. Just never know what demons someone is facing in their minds. :'( RIP Chester. Thank you for sharing the world your voice and words. Gone, but never forgotten.

See, I actually think this kind of music is overrated as fuck, and also more overused than people care to admit. I'm actually not sure how I think nu metal should be nowadays. I think most music is cliche these days. Maybe my standards have changed or something, idk.
My goodness, could not believe this when I heard late last night. Was a HUGE LP fan in my earlier days, and as silly as it sounds, one of my favorite moments ever, was standing in the front few rows of a LP concern (mosh-pit style) and Chester belted out a carried line (crawling?) and pointed down to me as he did it - pretty cool. RIP Chester, thank you for all that you've done.
My GF was having a real hard time yesterday. LP was a huge part of her getting through some tough times. I dug this out of a bottom dresser drawer long forgotten about. Its an unworn tour shirt from November 30th 2001 in Cedar Rapids Iowa. I gave her the shirt. She wore it to bed last night. RIP Chester. Thoughts and Prayers to his family and children and the fans.
RIP, not a fan of his music but suicide is never good....
Toxie said it best.
Never a fan, never cared for their style, but a life is a life and worth the same regardless.
RIP.
Not to be that guy, but I don't see threads about the nobodies who kill themselves, so threads like this say that this persons life is valued more than the nobody that you've never heard of or may have briefly read in the local obituaries. What makes him different? Because he sang in a band?

Very sweet of you.
I've done my best to keep things together personally, but it's honestly hit me harder than expected. I've been silent about it and kept it inside around others, but it's been tough. I grew up enduring multiple abusive relationships and LP was there at the right place and time for me as a youth. There are very few celebrity deaths that could hurt me like this, but as someone who will listen to the same band over and over for months on end, suffice to say I've spent a lot of time listening to this man sing.

I don't think anyone is really saying though that those people are NOT important. Or that Chester's life was more valued. Unless i missed something.
It would be kind of odd to scan through the obituaries and make a thread about some random person you didn't know. Of course it is sad, it is sad when just about anyone dies for any reason. And of course their life has value too, just as much as Chester. But Chester and his music are directly connected to millions of fans. So naturally they are going to want to discuss it and talk about it. Because people are mourning and talking about Chester, doesn't mean they don't give a shit about random people as well, but people are more compelled to discuss and be attached to people who directly influenced and/or were a part of their lives.
If people did as you said and made threads about the nobodies, this forum would become nothing but threads about people who either killed themselves or died for the myriad of other reasons people die and end up in obituaries.

Just my take on it.
But does anyone in here know Chester? How many folks in here actually knew he was suffering and had a mental illness?
nobody in here knows him, that's my point. Everyone is here is attached to his past work, which is fine, but I don't get this emotional attachment to someone you haven't met or spoken to.

Thank you for sharing that. I too listened to them extensively. It seems like so long ago and another life when I went to this concert yet I still remember the feeling I had and the mispent youth I was enduring. :-)

I view it as the same sort of thing as when a beloved fictional character in a game or book dies. Even these "people" who have never lived can have an impact on us emotionally. It's not a personal loss per se, but simple empathy. I've gotten emotional playing Metal Gear Solid; a beloved band's frontman dying isn't such a far cry from Otacon losing his sister. I feel sad FOR him.
^ Really dra600n? The emotional attachment is to the music, of which he was a key component of. Now that key component has tragically taken his own life, and considering the fact that they just released a new album a few months back and have an upcoming tour, this is bizarre and it's quite the shock to LP's fan base.
Some of the folks that have posted (including myself) have connected with LP music at an emotional level (which can go deep). It doesn't have to do with meeting or having a personal relationship with someone...this is very sad indeed.

His suffering was outlined in his music. He was a victim of viscious molestation growing up as he has been outspoken about it in the past. I too used to be the guy who would make comments like you have in this post. Salty and argumentative and insensitive. I know what it likes to see a post like this and try and make more out of it then is needed. Move on or be nice. God bless yah.
