Old 80's cartoons. I remember my sister bringing me an old Transformers VHS she found at a pawn shop or somewhere back in the late 90's. I remember thinking it would be awesome if someone would re-release the entire collected G1 series. No way that was ever happening, though. I also collected old video games before it was a thing. What do you do when you're suddenly a young adult with a disposable income? You start buying up shit you couldn't afford when you were a kid. That's what I did anyway.
I was into old games long before people started using the word "retro". When I got into NES and N64 back in 2006, nobody cared much about old games, things were very different back then. NES did have some interest, but it was nothing like today.
While collecting wasn't as big of a deal back then, I think it is more of a function of your age group to think that "nobody cared much about old games".
I used to sneak out of bed late at night, so I could watch the Simpsons on the Tracy Ullman Show.
As for bandwagon... I started Game of Thrones when season 2 came out, and Breaking Bad with Season 3.. also I guess my NES collecting falls into the bandwagon timeframe, (although I had been thinking about starting for a long time before that.)
Before it was cool: I kept almost all of my original video game systems. The 2 that have disappeared are my Game Boy and 32X. My heart hurts for that 32X. As a new generation console would come out my friends would always throw their old one out or give it away. They always talked crap about me keeping my old stuff and actually playing in every now and then. Jokes on them now.
After it's cool: No show socks. Everyone I saw wearing these were totally douchebags in the beginning and figured it would be gone in no time. It has been a thing for probably 15 years now and I did finally get on that bandwagon years ago. Now I see kids wearing crew socks pulled halfway up their shins and I guess I'm going to be the old man in this one and choose not to change.
Ready Player One, now that the movie is coming out it is all tbe rage. The book is fantastic but the movie isn't looking so hot but everyone is still going nuts for it. Posers
Bandwagon
Video Game Collecting. Always was a causal collector getting games here and there. I bought a bunch of my childhood favorites in early 2000's but never actually started to collect collect until 2010 by then the ship was already sailing away.
