How bad is the Game Genie for your Nes?

What are the long term effects of using the game genie and the short term ones?  I've used it in the past but I couldn't tell if it affected my nes. Does it really wear down the pins?

  • all games and game genies will wear down your Pins after a good amount of time using them but you have nothing to worry about unless you try a new game every 2 mins for 12 hours a day 300 days a year

  • Yeah, you can always buy new 72pin connectors too. So play away!
  • The problem with the Game Genie is the circuit board is extra thick, so it will make contact in the up position of a front loader. The thick board pushes the pins out more than usual, eventually making them so loose that only the thick Game Genie will work and not anything else. If you have no problem replacing that connector then don't worry, otherwise use it sparingly and don't leave it plugged in.
  • From a structural engineering standpoint, leaving it plugged in is irrelevant unless, for some reason, you heated the pins to a very high temperature while they were under the additional stress. (creep is not going to occur for the metal used in the pins at, or near, room temperature)

What matters is how many times you insert/remove the Game Genie, since this is the action that puts a stress cycle on the pins, and eventually leads to a permanent deformation.
  • Agreed, just go after another pin connector and use it. Unless you have a toploader, then you need that uber rare adapter piece.

  • Not as big of a deal with the ZIF connector in a toaster NES, but with the toploader it will stretch the pins apart so when you play a naked cart later on, it's like... throwing a hot dog down a hallway.
  • Wait, does the top loader adapter have the same effect? If so, I gotta rearrange here.

Again, from a structures/materials standpoint, this is purely a function of how many times you insert/remove the device.  Leaving it in place doesn't do anything bad, in and of itself.
