My first and probably last attempt to buy something from Limited Run games

  • That's the catch 22 to stuff like this. It's branded as collectible so everyone hoards and takes care of them thinking that they can cash in big time later and in most cases it's not the case.

That's why the older comics and cards shot up in value, most people read the comics and chucked them or put baseball cards in the spokes of their bicycles. That's why nes and snes cibs jumped up in value....many either didn't take care of their boxes and manuals or chucked them.

At some point the Topps Trading Card company realized that collectors love limited run stuff so they started churning out hundreds, if not thousands, of limited run cards. Some as few as maybe 10 prints. However, there are so many of these very-limited items, their not that desirable EXCEPT when they first come out.

What this means is those ingenious, nefarious peddlers of paper found a way to basically scrape MOST of the profit from the collector market from the first-sale. Scalpers can sometimes make a few BIG bucks on quick turnaround, but that's not always guaranteed. I'm not saying you can't buy stuff in collectible markets that's of worth but this "limited run" stuff, when it gets crazy, means that makers can charge high-dollar prices, usually sell it, and you're stuck with an item that will very-likely only depreciate in value.

Apply this to the gaming industry and now you have games that come out shortly, are hard to obtain but aren't going to be worth much in the long run. If you want a copy you're going to have to live with this frustration, hope to buy one from the distributor "at midnight" or accept you're going to have to get a mark up on eBay or wait a long time on eBay for the market to cool off.

I say I blame Topps because I think they were the ones that came up with this mechanism, and the gaming industry only copied it.

I believe in free markets but so long as people continue to run out and sell this stuff out in 2 minutes, this is only going to continue. Honestly, I'm glad to hear your done with this, though I'm sorry for your personal experience. I hope more follow suit.

It started out as a novelty but then grew into the industry standard.

Modern baseball cards are going to be worthless because of it. I forsee the same thing happening to games if this gets out of hand.

  • Anyone got a second chance to order?
  • I got in on 2nd release, that was first time I had been too slow.
  • So what the hell is this anyway? A company that releases digital games as a physical release in limited quantities?

    yup.

Well that is a clever scheme if I do say so, people will buy that shit up every single time without even thinkin' about it as demonstrated here.

  • A few things that bug me is as soon as it hits 7:00...the clock was still up, not letting me buy. Had to spam the refresh button in a panic...

And when I'm checking out it has me put in my phone number (even though they have my phone number in my account...wtf!) so that just slows me down by a few seconds...then I have to log into Paypal (thankfully the login is already there filled out so I just click a button) and THEN I have to confirm it.

From what I've heard...unless I get that confirmation screen...my copy can be sold to someone else. That's not right.

idk how to make it so I don't have to type my phone number in every damn time...I tried going into my account but it won't let me do anything...and it has my damn number right there! :/

    Anyone else have this issue?

    Boy you complain a lot.

I signed up, bought the game, checked out, and was done, all within a whole 10 minutes. I guess they should make it just one button and have a special VIP list so people with super important lives won't miss out?

Boy you like to provoke people...as a mod do you really think that's the right thing to do?

I was just stating what happened to me and wondering why LRG doesn't save my phone number even though they have it in my profile...saved. Other people were saying what bugs them about LRG...am I not free to say what bugs me? I don't see you replying to them saying they complain. Even though they are.
  • Well most people don't complain about every single thing that happens to them.

I've always asked why they always ask for a number before the order completion.

It's because they like backups...in case your package is lost or something happens they can contact you via phone? I assume that's why anyone demands your phone number before ordering something. Never had someone call me or a huge issue happen so no real clue. Maybe they use it to sell it to companies...hell if I know lol.
  • Truth is people..... get faster internet and get off the cheap shit! I haven't missed a release and bought all 4 games with no problem at 10 am. Sit your butt in front of the computer.... log in your PayPal ahead of time along with LRG account and be prepared.... copy and paste your phone number..... have all the screens open and go. If you are trying to purchase off your phone that isn't wise. This isn't rocket science

I pratically did this, except copy paste phone.

  • I'm paying with Amazon and I'm not having to put my phone number in. Not sure why it would be different that way, but I'm able to check out pretty quick. I haven't attempted to purchase every LRG release, but every time I've wanted a game I've had no trouble getting it with only one exception, which was last week when my internet failed at home and my AT&T cellular data was down at the same time. Talk about shitting timing, but by the time everything was up and running the games were sold out. I've never missed a game because of issues with the LRG website.

Hey you would be surprised how much time that saves. I type it out.... select and copy. When that screen pops up simple ctrl + v and it's paste  right in there.

  • Lrg has a false sense of scarcity, due to scalping and hording. The first few releases/ cult classics will always be valuable, because so many people are hanging onto them. People want what they can't have, and if all of the very early releases are in collector hands that are never going to get rid of them, they are going to carry a value.
  • Oh and for the record, I've been able to buy every single release from my phone while at work and not on Wi-Fi no problem
  • I used buy their releases, but after they started selling out immediately it wasn't worth my time. More people are wanting to buy and they want to keep it scarce, that's just the nature of the game. Less risk for them and they keep their products hyped up. To me its not that big of a deal. It's just like the NES Classic, it's not worth constantly checking online or going early in the morning to get one at a store. Sure I want one, but not that much.

    Good luck to everyone.
  • Don't they tell you when the games are going up for sale? Like, there's a set schedule, why is it so hard?
  • If it wasn't hard to get people wouldn't want it..... if they did pre-orders there would be no sense of urgency. Look at the other game up now Lawbreakers.... still sitting there but no one complaining about that release. Take the good with the bad and enjoy the ride.

Fyi wonder boy will be up between 5pm and 6pm est ..... less than 200 standard and 100 CE from cancelled orders of people who violated the purchase amounts

Can you direct me to where you got the info and if one would purchase a copy... just use the same link? I ask for a friend of mine.

Same sold out link on their website. Check their twitter.

  • I honestly haven't had a problem with buying games from them. Every game I wanted I was able to get (Including Wonder Boy)

If you guys really want to feel struggle trying being a print collector and waiting all day for a poster to pop up at a random time and missing it only to see it on EBay for 8 times the mark up. I don't miss those days.
  • I was on vacation, so didn't even try for this. It's crazy to see all the upset people on their facebook though.

Lol you log in  , have all your stuff ready for purchase. Goes live. You click buy within 5 seconds. Sorry sold out.

Im not kidding. All the big popular releases are like this.

To the poster above. Yea part of it is they are limited and that is why they sell. But they dont have to be that limited. Preorders and sold out would still be hyped. People buy games that arent going to be printed anymore. Its not the difficulty in getting one. Its the limited once sold its gone aspect. You arent really reaching the correct audience right now. Your reaching the flipper crowd. Preorders for a limited print allows a person to buy and flip as well but it allows everyone on top of things to get in on it
