I can understand that to a certain point. I just think it's funny that all but 2 of the games are ok because they never had a French version. It's just the two games that were released in French back in the SNES era that are the problem.
Yeah that's a rule for Quebec. You can't sell anything in Quebec that doesn't have bilingual packaging. Seems odd that Nintendo would simply not create bilingual packaging for Canada across the board, but it is what it is I suppose.
See the red box at the top? With the writing in it? From what I recall it says something like "cette versione est entirement en Francais" or however you would say "this version entirely in French", in French.
In other words if I'm right its a software-language issue, not a packaging issue, because Nintendo has included the English language rom (and no doubt is not interested in changing the rom set for the entire continent just to suit Quebec).
I suspect its not a packaging issue . Nintendo would be all over that - easy to fix.
The issue is that there are french language versions of Zelda LTTP and I guess one other game. as in, the IN GAME language is french.
I suspect the law says... if you make the game in french, you have to sell it in french here. If you make the game in english only, we'll allow it.
So the existence of a Quebec french in-game LTTP (and one other..) is what is fucking things up. I suspect.
I think you got it absolutely right.
Now everybody will take this opportunity to claim that Quebec is a fucked up province with Nazi-like laws about French, but I don't think it would have been that hard for Nintendo to take this in account beforehand and prepare a package with the French versions in option (I haven't checked what is the other game that had a French release, but there's apparently 2).
C'mon, they probably took the time to finish/polish Starfox 2 for the release, so including French versions of games shouldn't have been that complicated either. I wish the law would be circumvent simply cause it is stupid to enforce it for such things (and it is not like we haven't played hundreds of games in English back then as primary French speakers), but as a business Nintendo should have known better as well.
I'm re-evaluating whether I think this will be worse than the NES Classic. I guess 10 pre-orders compared to 8 for the NES Classic might be statistically significant, but it sure feels like the pandemonium is just as high as it was 1 year ago.
Of course it is going to be worse than the NES classic. Just like the hype and availability with each successive big Limited Run Games release is harder and harder to get.
People had a decent chance at preordering those last year because no one knew what resale was going to be. Market proved they'll hold $200-$300 pretty easy. Not even considering the inevitable hack that will come up.
I wish everyone luck in getting them but it's a no brainer that it'll be over retail at release. At best you can hope that Nintendo floods with restocks up until the holiday season to cool it off a bit. But if you want one on day one then you either need to preorder, line up on release day or pay a scalper. Those are the 3 options.
All good points.
For what it is worth, Target has sold out 3 additional waves in around 30 seconds, and those ThinkGeek bundles are selling.
Even Toys R Us is probably going to get leveled with traffic.
I suspect its not a packaging issue . Nintendo would be all over that - easy to fix.

Oh I totally agree. Probably all they had to do was include both roms, french and english, and they'd be done!
Ugh!!!!! Just called every Gamestop and one answered the phone...the others won't...and he said they're all sold out. Every website is sold out...and Thinkgeek is just forever loading on bundles...
I suspect its not a packaging issue . Nintendo would be all over that - easy to fix.

The difference is that EVERYBODY benefits from Starfox 2 (and in fact an official release of that game becomes a primary selling point, even for emulator-gamers).
Whereas the benefit, to them, from providing a French language version is going to be diminishingly small.
I went through Best Buy, and after multiple errors and timeouts I got to the PayPal checkout. Went through that, finished, and got another timeout error. I have not received any confirmation from either PayPal or Best Buy, so I assume my order didn't go through and I'm out of luck yet again.
do y'all think the snes classic will affect the current prices of the nes classics and also what percentage of all of the pre orders do y'all think are scalpers? i am thinking like 95-99%
The fact that Target still lets you click on "pre-order now" only to say it is out of stock is pissing me off. I was in the final step like an hour ago and it failed 4 times.
Wait...Gamestop is pushing the ThinkGeek ad on their "maintenance" site - I call shenanigans they are selling all theirs thru thinkgeek...that would be low.
you can still buy the bundles at Thinkgeek but they are expensive, they have flooded ebay, damm those resellers
Note to fellow Canadians: They will not ship these bundles to us.
Sadly EVERYWHERE that is SUDDENLY offering pre-orders here in Canada is now SOLD OUT.
They could at least give us some notice ahead of time, give us a damn chance to get in there. When they keep these things quiet it just hands them to bots and scalpers. I'm just a normal guy with a normal job. I ain't got time to be sitting on my computer staring at your website all day every day in the hopes you'll put up preorders.

Probably right...just let our site crash and then feed thinkgeek. This was the only way I got an NES Classic was to buy one of the $140.00 bundles on Gamestop last time. I do like my question block lamp though

Perhaps they didn't want to confuse the market and get 10,000 calls to Wal-Mart about why little Johnny's zelda game sounds like an es-car-got when somebody fires up the wrong rom. The confusion it would create probably wasn't worth it; easier to just shut Quebec out unfortunately.
Causing potential product confusion for 98% of their North American market to placate Quebec doesn't seem worth the hassle, to me.

Can any of our Canadian friends confirm this?

I can confirm at least that I have seen some "This item is not available in Quebec" notices.
That's a crazy rule. I've never heard of it.

Yeah, it's a packaging thing. Gotta be bilingual.

If you don't mind paying $100+ over MSRP for some shit worth $20, you can grab one here.
