Are Reproductions Overpriced?
At my local game store there is a Flintstones Dinosaur Peak repro being sold for $80.00. I got into a friendly arguement with the owner about how I don't think that a reproduction (essentially fake merchandise) could possibly be sold for that high a price (or at all, for that matter). Flintstones is a pricey game, but I shouldn't have to pay 80.00 for the chance to put a copy of it in my nintendo.
Reproductions can be a good thing, especially since Flintstones is a rare game and I'd never get to play it other than Emulation. But the 500+ price point of the original does not transfer (whatever the amount) to different, handmade piece of plastic. I don't think game stores should be selling certain repros but if they are then price accordingly. Thoughts?

Unfortunately I have ran across soooo many people that dont even know its a thing.
It's not a repro, it's a scam.
A repro of a licensed, published game is just a pirate cart, nothing more.

people who spend this much money on these fake pirates are morons. Everdrives that can play essentially everything arent even that much more. N64 is the worst on ebay now. Someone was selling fake mario party 1 2 3 sets for 105 shipped. Sold 20 of them. All 3 real might cost you 150. A Version 2 N64 Everdrive which can play nearly every single thing besides some import stuff is the same price of the mario party fake set. I will never understand the point of people buying expensive fakes to play. One of their feedbacks said. " Games worked great and they look brand new" ???wtf?
How much does it cost to make them?
they sell on AliExpress for 25 so it can't cost that much

Doesn't seem too bad if someone "actually" wants it.
I have no idea what shells, boards, chips and time would cost though.
If all you care about is playing, then invest in an everdrive (if you want to play on original hardware) or emulate for free on a PC.
If you want to collect, then drop the cash for the real thing. other collectors aren't going to take your collection serious if you have repros of high end games.
Any cart only repro should never be more than 25-30$

Have you play Flintstones SADP? It's not really that much fun. As for the $80 price tag, really high. A game store selling a reproduction seems to be more common now days. I know I'm in the minority here but I really dont mind reproductions. It's easy to tell the difference. That being said the only game I have that is a reproduction cart is Mario Bros II the lost levels. So I can't really comment on quality of the reproduction carts. But if a buyer wants one, get one I say. Just my opinion.

I actually really enjoy the game. Doesn't mean I want a fake copy but just saying

Should have said in my opinion.

Yeah, that is what I don't get about these overpriced repros of expensive games.
I get wanting to have something that looks like the real thing, l don't agree with it, but I get it. But if you can follow directions on the internet, you can make your own. Why would you spend way more on something that isn't real? And I can't believe that someone would only want F2 if they are going to shell out for a fake game.
And of course the multiple cans of worms about fakes in the first place.
Even if they were $5, they'd be overpriced.
If you want to play the game without having to play the real thing then there are a few options to do that.
Like the saying goes "not worth the plastic they're printed on"

I never thought of it like that, but yeah your right I don't see the reasoning behind selling these. The owner didn't see any wrong doing in this matter. Weird

Wait until the owner gets burned buying a fake cart of a game worth hundreds of dollars and can't recoup the loss. He'll change his tune.

if he doesn't see any issue with it, i'd report it to the police and see if he gets the hint when they explain it to him.

I wanted and found a fake copy, a Supervision Pirate from the early 90's. Hate on me all you want but it's something obscure in my collection that I really enjoy. Fun game.

not even close to the same thing. I mean solder some shit on a board and slap a label on it in my garage

Lol, I like how it's only a pirate cart if it is a repro of a licensed, published game. It looks like my 72 pin Videomation repros are pirates, but my 60 pin Videomation repros are A-OK. All repros are just as bad, in terms of what they are, except for things like the gold Duck Tales, Capcom SFII 30th edition, etc, which were produced hand-in-hand with the company.
Getting back to the topic at hand: I feel the same way as the OP, it is weird for me when people try to transfer price across lke that. I felt the same way in the thread I had started years ago, where people charge high prices for PAL Stadium Events just because it is Stadium Events.
Repros imo shouldn't be costing more than $25 - $30, and all of the new CIB repros these days, I also feel are quite a bit steep, again not sure who would be paying those prices but whatever.
Regarding reporting the guy to the police and what not: Just look on ebay, look on NA, look everywhere, literally everyone and his / her uncle is selling repro carts. Hell, I even know (of) a guy on the police force that sells reproduction cartridges he buys from aliexpress, lol. As long as the guy isn't outright scamming people (hey this is the original product, etc etc), I just don't see the point in trying to be the white knight, just because you don't agree with his practices.
Now, I know some are thinking you would be super upset if it was a NWC, or Stadium Events cart that you paid thousands rather than Snow Bros 2010 price. and yes, I would be very upset however I would be upset with myself for not doing the research and getting others involved in the authentication process before making that investment.
Please note I am not supporting the reproductions being marketed as real or the fraudulent practices of sellers trying to take advantage of collectors. But I can't say I really care if some company is making and marketing pirate carts as reproductions and putting them up for sale.
Just an opinion. Off topic..sorry

Flintstones actually is a decent platformer. Its not that hard, but its hardly a bad game. People who think its bad either A) dont like platformers
