New Super Mario Bros DS

I was going through attempting to fix close to 120 of these carts. Only 1 was the board on the left. Must have been a late revision.

Anyways- figured I'd document the difference. Don't know if it was just a production update or also a rom update...

  • How did you come to possess 120 of these and what's wrong with them? Just curious.

There was a huge damaged/destroyed lot I bought. They all looked like this.

There isn't a great way to do that. Basically very carefully, so it can be glued back together. Most of these it didn't matter as the shell was already wrecked.
  • Oh neat, what's the ID information printed on the 44 pin TSOP type chip? I used to work with those all the time.
  • Were those deliberately damaged like that? Looked like some one went nuts with a set of nail clippers and a disturbing hatred for mario ds carts or perhaps it was a knife "jab, jab, jabjabjab"

They were- I assume it was some way of destroying them, possibly a big box store writing them off as a loss to scrap. Most of the boards were damaged too- which is a pain to fix.
  • Probably from store demo kiosks. For some reason these don't say "not for resale."

Maybe- I figured Store returns because they had saves, some all the way to the last world. Also most were disgustingly dirty from use.

That's probably likely. They were destroyed the same way as many of the DS Download Station and Pokemon event cards. We see these two revisions of the same title but how consistent are the PCBs across titles (for the purposes of donor PCBs)? If you can get a hot air rework Station and a ton of Catz, Dogz, Babiez, Imagine Series, etc for $1 each you may be able to make some bank.

While there is a NSMB DS kiosk cart (heh I originally put kart), it had a uniquie NTR designation of NTR-A85E-USA and all of the copies of NSMB that appeared in kiosks had NFR front labels (as well as the rear label). These are some kind of 'defective' damaging out.  Basically just need some sharp scissors or tin snips and you just do one cut onto the front of the cart and into the recycle bin they go.

The right board is fairly common (some of the guitar hero games are donars). Final numbers are 113 total carts. 35 still need new shells. 34 are more damaged and need board swaps. So 79 will be working albeit after many hours of work. As for the 34- I'll likely eBay them as they can be fixed, but I just don't have he time.
  • Finally finished. Many a guitar hero was used for shells...

    Total was 79.

  • Awesome work!
  • Nicely done! How many hours you got into it you think?

Hard to say- as it was done in stages. Probably 12 hrs total. Took quite a bit of time transplanting labels, and peeling off the old ones.
  • Great work! Reminds me of that refrigerator full of Jurassic Park SNES cartridges. I heard that fridge was sold so maybe you can throw these into an ice chest and sell them to that same guy
