Storing Manuals

So how does everyone store their manuals? Currently I have mine in a small box but curious if there are other methods to store and protect them. Having collected baseball cards BITD I was thinking if there were pocketed pages that would fit in a binder that are sized to hold your typical NES game manual.

  • I remember seeing somewhere on the forums that manuals will fit nicely into the pockets of Martha Stewart cookbook card holders. I'm sure if you search for Martha you can find the thread
  • I keep mine in their boxes. And i keep the boxes and manuals together displayed and the carts separate so i can use my actual carts easier.
  • I tried keeping them in pocket pages and it did not work. Manuals come in so many different sizes and thickness and nothing held them securely without harming the manuals. Most fell out when I would turn the pages. I used half sheets, so basically two pockets per page, front and back, so each page could hold four manuals. The weight of the manuals also caused the pages to sag out of the binder on the far corner if stored upright, leading to damaged corners.
  • I saw a mention on another thread of some binder sleeves from Hobby Lobby. I'm going to stop by one tomorrow and see what they have.
  • If I had to store mine separately, I would use a standard photo album type storage. I'm unsure of a larger size or book type, maybe you could check big retail shops around you to see if they have a similar option that would work!

Exact same here. If a manual needs to be accessed just open up the box.

  • All of my loose manuals go into lunch boxes. You know those collectible tin ones that are everywhere.
  • Honestly, I have special box made for photos. I stack about 10 manuals, then I take the next stack and turn them 180 to the last, this way they don't keep stacking up at an odd angle. I don't know if this is the best way, but since most of that stuff is trade fodder to me, I want to keep it nice but I'd rather not deal with stuffing them gently in any form of sleeve. My box is sealed from like and it doesn't get moved around, so my manuals aren't damaged at all.

This probably isn't the answer you want, but it does work, especially if you don't want these for display.

Yup, this is the ticket!  I just found a few more of these at my spot ... they do work great, but unfortunately they aren't sold any more at Staples (where I originally got them).  Here's what they look like:

They fit a 4 NES manuals perfectly per page.  The only issue is that originally they were clear and then they went to blue and they aren't as good looking IMO.

  • In the sleeve with the cart, if I only have cart + manual.

In the box if I have the box.
  • What if you only have the manual

Well, if it's for one of the two games I'm still missing (Power Blade 2 and Panic Restaurant), I guess I'd have to frame it.
  • CD sleeves are great, they open from the sides and not the top so your manuals don't slide out. Perfect for NES and Gameboy. SNES/GEN are a little too big unfortunately but I'm a fan of how well they fit my NES stuff. They make for a thick book tho.
  • I've always either stored mine in their respective boxes or if loose they get stored in some of my empty display boxes. Never saw any sense in keeping them out especially due to the fact I have kids who seem to get into everything.
  • If you're meaning loose manuals for games that I don't have a box for, I purchased some manual protectors for the respective sized manuals and have them in a safe, light-free area.
  • I keep mine out in the open in a closed off cabinet standing tall compressed between many more manuals for different systems (Gameboy versions, NES, SNES, and N64) since I don't seek out buying boxes. I rarely look at them anyway so they're safe where I left them.
  • I don't really have any special things for my manuals.

I have all my loose NES manuals on a little stack over my boxed GB games. Mainly because I'm lazy and it's a good spot to leave them and pick them up in case I ever need instructions for any of the ("very complex") games I have these manuals for. There is just enough space on that shelf for them to fit there haha. As for manuals for other systems I usually stack them somewhere in the same spot I have games for that system. NES gets a special treatment because it's the system I play the most and that I like to flick through the pages of the manual if I happen to have it for the game I'm playing.

Some might argue I'm neglecting my manuals but I've never had any problems just casually stacking them near their system's games
  • For SNES manuals I use SNES baggies and then store them in SNES Box Protectors
