Question about Snes console box contents

Do only the earlier console boxes have the flat cardboard that covers the styrofoam, or did all later releases have it as well?

Comments

  • Thats a tough one. I swear I have seen some with and without. Little to no help I can offer but would like to know more myself.
  • Well they could also have just gone missing over the years right?

I had the original with Super Mario World bundled and it did have it. That's all I know
  • After multiple exchanges in the 90s, none of the boxes I saw ever had a sheet of cardboard. My first system was a control set in 1993 or 1994.

    Brand new or used?

    Brand new.

I remember there were at least a few exchanges and upgrades over the following years -- all new. Typically at Wal-mart.

One "upgrade" was when I sold my SNES to get a Super Set on Black Friday that also included Mario Paint with mouse and pad, with a large sticker on the box.

  • Well my super nes super set has one, which I bought the box and styrofoam off ebay, but my complete mario set with allstars did not.
  • My Christmas of 1991 Snes with SMW had no cardboard insert
  • I'm under the belief it went from yes to no over the years to cut costs. I got the SNES the day it came out and it had that just like also I remember the Super Scope had that too. I now have a barely used DK SNES set in the box and it doesn't have one but it came out many years later.
  • I have a Cib snes set with smw pack in and it has that cardboard.

If the SNES came from that box, is it the early version with the cartridge locking mechanism? Older units would also have a foil serial number sticker instead of white paper label.

  • I've personally owned or witnessed the unboxing of the following when they were new and NONE of them had this piece of cardboard I hear being described in this thread:

1993 SNS-001 Control Deck with "back by popular demand" Super Mario All*Stars mail-in offer from Babbages (purchased early 1994)

1995 SNS-001 Super Set with bonus Mario Paint from Wal-Mart (purchased Black Friday)

1995 SNS-001 Combo Set with bonus logo ballcap and NP Player's Guide from Wal-Mart (purchased early 1996, IIRC)

1996 SNS-001 Mario Set from either Wal-Mart or Toys R Us (purchased mid-1997)

1997 SNS-101 Control Deck with bonus Super Mario World 2 originally intended for Wal-Mart (purchased NOS from Buy.com in mid/late 2000)

Actually, I witnessed at least three Combo Sets. My friend purchased it to play me on X-BAND and it just wouldn't work. He kept exchanging it until we realized that it was an incompatible 1.1 version.

I've seen many more CIBs over the years including SNS-001 Control Deck with bonus Ken Griffey Jr, multiple Super Sets, etc. I was obsessive over exactly those kinds of details even back then and I can honestly say that I have never seen one. Ever.

I just put a random console in the box, it was the only piece missing. They threw it out cause it didn't work. Turns out it was probably just the acrobat adaptor since that was dead when I tested it.

    But they do exist.

Right. I'm just firmly establishing that it was either inconsistent or firmly earlier in the life (mid 1993 or earlier).

Actually your info makes me think it was only for the original super set.

Right, but I bought a Super Set on Black Friday 1995 (it's in the list) and even the Super Set definitely did not have it by then. Of course, there had been many other revisions by that point (two rubber feet, molded Eject lettering, power sticker with no locking mechanism, no printing on the shoulder buttons, etc).

Well mine has it, so I guess its safe to say no packing revisions after the superset had it. I will guess that somewhere in the super set cycle they felt it was a waste of money.
  • I looked on ebay and the only ones that have it are the super set and the boxed version that has no sub set name (which I assume is the original release.

Yes. That's what I'm thinking: Only the earliest of the Super Sets had the cardboard sheet. I'd say the overwhelming majority of Super Sets did not have it, just like the overwhelming majority of SNES consoles lack the locking mechanism.
