What's something like that worth and has it happened before with another PS2 game? Also how the hell did this get in to circulation or was someone sneaky and lifted this from their retail store where they worked?
Well as far back as I can trace it came from an eBay reseller from Canada sold for approximately $15 to startyde then to me for $60 and the case cost $30. As far as I know there's no others like it.
As to how it slipped past good question QA must have been asleep.
i did'nt realize stuff like this is sought after..amazon sent me a Wii U game last year, with a similiar style box art cover underneath the seal...i quickly returned it back to amazon..it was captain's toad treasure tracker..i know regret it..i should of kept it.

Yeah that happens alot to errors. They get returned and lost or destroyed. I'm one of a few people who will seek out errors and collect them

Man, that looks like it would be really hard to miss by someone at somepoint from production to sales . Very neat piece - haven't seen anything like it myself.

NO i did'nt take pictures..man! i just wasn't thinking straight..i was like i can't believe someone at amazon packaged this up and sent it to me...so i sent it back without realizing it could have been a anomaly for collector's..i just was like i wanted a nice cover on my game i paid for...and did'nt think twice before sending it back.
Hybrid: how does this error occur? It looks like a 'test' was run on the paper
When a large volume of stock is being printed, it's a large sheet or roll that is then trimmed to size. Printing is done I'm 4 colors (generally) cyan, magenta, yellow, black. It can get more complicated, but this is just to get the idea across. Each sheet will have what ended up on this case either at the beginning or end. If the squares don't line up there was an issue with the print and stuff will look like a jumbled mess. For example: http://nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=5&threadid=177613
So basically that end of the sheet got trimmed and inserted into a case without anybody realizing

Ah, so it's basically the calibration sheet for the whole printing process?

There's more to it the color control strip is used to test ink quality is how they blend together how well special characters are printed and how well the ink prints on the paper
