Is it a good time to start Wii Collecting?

So recently, I've been going into thift stores, buying from friends, etc. I've been able to get a modest collection of wii games. As I'm making more deals, and seeing more in the future, I might wanna try going for the complete set. I've seen NintendoTwizer's collection, seeing the rarities, uncommon stuff, etc. So it looks like a good set to go for. My only concern is having a lot of shovelware games, which wouldn't bother me too much because I have fun playing terrible/broken games.

I see that at the moment, Gamecube is the console everyone is going for, so is it a right time to start collecting for the Wii?

  • It's not like Wii prices are getting any lower. During one Gamestop's recent 4-for-10 sales over 800 Wii games were just $2.50.

Aw shit. I've heard of those. I remember going into a gamestop and getting a Buy-2-Get-2-Free, which I did take advantage of by getting something for me and my cousin. I agree with what you said though, prices aren't getting any lower.

  • I've said it once and I'll say it again...better get Let's Sing 2016 while you can for cheap. Once Wii collecting really picks up, that one is going to be impossible to find.

I'll make a side investment strictly for that game then.

  • I think it's a good time, Wii is everywhere it seems... If you're interested in getting some slightly hard to find sealed Wii games at a good price maybe we could do a deal once I'm back home with my FS stuff in December... Okay shameless plug over
  • Absolutely. Wii is the most common, cheapest Nintendo console by far. Even most of the quality games are relatively cheap and easy to find.
  • It is, but a year or two would have been even better. I suggest hitting GameStops and seeing what they have, I've pretty much found everything I've been looking for over the past couple years. Just this past weekend I found copies of Data East Arcade Classics and Gunblade NY & LA Machineguns sitting in GameStops. I think Wii is at it's bottom price wise, most of the niche stuff hasn't gone crazy yet.
  • Anytime is a good time to start collecting any Nintendo products because they seem to always rise in value. Wii's have been a bit slow to catching on but given a bit more time definitely I think which I think is what you mean by now being a good time so yes great time. Back in 2010 I bought 2 new 25th anniversary of super mario bros red wii's at walmart when they launched and they lady got me 2 out of the back and they came packaged 2 to a box with serial # labels on the packaging box itself. $500 dropped on them & they've really not increased in value any last time I checked but they will eventually. Also bought a sky blue wii that was the version with the cube ports removed & backward compatibility taken out I got it a few years ago for about $100. Just a few months back I got a mini wii the little red and black one that's really watered down but not nearly as many of those around and the one I got was never taken out of the box a man got it for his sons who already had a wii & they just got the mario kart game out of the box everything else mint in plastic untouched. I got it for about $100. I've got pretty much every nintendo console sealed from nes up other than a gamecube. I had an opportunity a few years ago to buy some silver ones at toys r us for $50 (ones without the digital out port) but I was on a vacation and didn't have room to haul them around during the trip. Still wish I had gotten one of them though.
  • It was a better market a year ago but now isn't bad, it's certainly readily available. The issue for me is collecting only quality or interesting items. There's so much bloat out there. I don't care if mensa is rare in never going to buy it. I think lets sing is a little more interesting due to the history and nudity issue.
  • Its a good time to collect Wii, PS2, PS3, XBOX, and XBOX360. The markets for them have not yet be well established like older consoles. So they are much cheap. There is also a ton of games and a lot of crap games, so theres plenty of games available.
  • I will also say that I've seen popular games that are hard to find in the wild. I saw a Dokapon Kingdom for 50 dollars at a store in Indy....it was disc only, but that was a surprise, so you might be surprised what you find in the wild. But I don't think it will last for long
  • Yes, it's a very good time
  • I mean yea its a decent time. For a complete set though you probsbly are a little late unless you get lucky with multiple finds. People know wii rarities now so stumbling on them is more difficult now
  • It would have been better a couple years ago, at least for Gamestops, as a lot of cases and manuals seem to be getting tossed. You can still strike gold at garage sales and thrift stores but some of the less common titles will be tricky. Amazon occasionally has some new copies pop up on some weird titles you don't see in the wild often.

That is speaking only on the games side of it. Wii consoles are all over and it still seems like the non-gamer is not aware that og Wii can play GameCube titles.

Some of it has even come down.   It's easy to knock out a complete Fritz Chess for under $100

  • It's not a good time for many of the rarer or uncommon titles because the information is out there and collector's have been scooping those up for a while now already. However, It's a good time for the cheap commons. Although, I don't think there will ever be a bad time for those.  The install base for the Wii is one of the largest of any game system, so cheap commons will be common forever.  If you want cheap commons, get them now at Gamestop while they still carry them. They are super cheap, and very often still CIB. But it wouldn't surprise me if GS starts pitching the cases and putting the games in paper sleeves as they start co clearance that stuff out. Pawn shops, Goodwill and garage sales are also pretty good sources for cheap commons because people have started dumping their old Wii systems, especially the casual gamers who bought them during the Wii craze and no longer care or have interest.
  • I concur with everything everyone else is saying, but I would add...

I think now is a good time, because where as you may find most of the common titles (remember there are like 1,700 games) you wont find all of the manuals/inserts/slip cases/paper boxes easily. Not to mention these AREN'T cartridges, these discs are often in horrible condition
  • Well, I'm not the best person to answer, but I will say that I see Wii titles more than any other system in thrift shops and, IMHO, that's a good sign. MY personal problem, though, is that everything I see is straight-up shovel wear. I'm not looking for top-tier (or even future top-tier) games but everything is of the variety of items that will likely never be worth more than $10 in my life time. Still, I keep my eyes peeled, and short of sport titles, there's rarely any game I'll pass up that's $1 at a thrift shop or yard sale. Wii games are perfect for that price range.
  • not a great time to buy all the wii games, too many people currently speculating on what will be valuable one day.

but its a great time to pick up commons at yard sales. gamestores, pawnshops, etc, but dont bother buying any of the hyped b.s. $100+ games. the completionists arent going to come for this set the way they do for nes-snes-64-gc so hold off on those.
  • Yep! The Wii has some good games. Not a ton of good games but there are at least 15 pretty solid titles, and probably more some people haven't really discovered yet.

My absolute favorite Wii game is Mario strikers charged. Another one I really enjoyed was ivy the kiwi. Great little platformer

Absolutely. I've had a few issues, when I've been more into Gamecube collecting, I've had scratched up discs. Still haven't fixed them, as I might need to fund for a disc resurfacer, which can go out for crazy prices.

Nice! I've played that at my friends' houses, real great game. I haven't added that to the collection, but I'll try to. One neat one that my brother owned (as he's a game collector who recently sold his collection sadly) was Klonoa. Would've loved to have asked him to have that one, it fetches for a high price and it's a great port of the PSX game.

  • Probably the best Nintendo system to collect for at this time. One good thing about the huge library is a lot of stuff will slip through the cracks. Even as an collector, Wii is the one system I can't keep all the rares in the back of my mind while looking around. A ton of cheap games on the Wii.

That's honestly one of the better parts of collecting for the Wii. With people not always checking for their prices and not keeping rares in the back of their minds, you can easily get some good deals.

  • Not to mention its just fun to hunt down.

It's cheap and copious. Like seriously most are $0.50 to $5 a game (even at game stop!). It gives me a bit of that nostalgic nes game hunting feeling from 15 years ago.

Sure it's a lot of shovel Ware. Sure you'll never play them. Who cares

Shovelware is fun to play sometimes, due to the terrible quality of those games. I've heard stories on NES collecting, and how it used to be a completely different market back then. I'll be sure to mostly have fun with my finds.

Yeah, I paid $0.45 for Link's Crossbow Training CIB at Gamestop (before Power Reward discount).

    Damn. Nice deal, mate!
  • I was recently thinking about starting to pick up some Wii stuff. The boy and I went to the thrift store this morning and what did I find but a sealed Player Select Wii Sports for like $3. Not bad.
