Throwing money away, that is how. Of course, that invalidates what you state in your post. There is no easy way to get rare games cheap. You have to be in the lookout, and trying to beat resellers that do it for a living. A middleground option is to have good connections in the collecting scene, belong to many different groups, look for games in different countries where collecting is not that widespread... But all that is not easy.
Just to give you an example, where I live, resellers go to flea markets since dawn (5 am aprox) to sweep any games that are worth it.
And persistence. Like, be out there searching for ten years at garage sales hoping to find the little old lady who has no idea the Nintender tape of Little Samson is worth $1200 but she'll sell it for $5 because she's never heard of ebay.

Other than that, it's a tough racket.
Are you trying to go for a full set of anything?
Yes, full set of Sega consoles (but that's for the sega age forums) and a complete SNES and n64 collection.
If it was "easy", it wouldn't be nearly as fun of a hobby.
I know the folks who want full sets to drop in their laps would disagree ("fuck scalpers and resellers!", etc.), but the hunt is a big part of the fun for me. If I won the lottery tomorrow, I wouldn't get very much satisfaction from buying a set outright just because I can.
It's actually not an expensive hobby compared to many others. In most (many? all speculation, hah) cases there are literally millions of a given game out there.
If you mean what you really say then you have 2 options,
Stick with current systems or systems that fewer people care for.
Prices for 360 and PS3 are at the lowest points in their history. Limited Games releases rare games for the PS4 that sell out quickly.
However, I don't think that is what you are really asking. I think what you really are asking is how can you buy $100 games for $10.
If so there is no easy way that anyone here will share. Hard work. Find a system that works for you and keep looking everyday.
Interesting, I may look at the Xbox 360 and ps3, I have both consoles, so why not.
While I don't actively collect for these systems, I do own a game store so I see some things far less than others. One thing I would say to research are the Gamestop 2in1 exclusives for the 360. We never get those traded in. No one cares for them now but some of those might be hard to find down the road esp sealed. There are also Walmart , Bestbuy and Target exclusives that might be harder to find as well. To find the rare items will take some research first on what the rare items are. Put some time into this and you should find some interesting things.

I've been clearing out my PS3 collection; toss me a PM if you want a bulk deal on like 50 or so games.
PS3 games are harder to find in top shape than 360 games.
Xbox 360 games can be cleaned. PS3 games are blu-ray and can not be cleaned. Top shape PS3 games will command a premium in the future because of this.
This is a good time to pick up common titles for $1 or less.
All of my PS3 discs are in pristine condition, as I purchased them all new with very few exceptions.
Top condition PS3 games at rock bottom prices is a double win.
I love buying up common adventure games for the PS3 at a buck a pop when they are mint complete. Uncharted , God of War etc. Great games at rock bottom prices are the best.

Oh for sure. I can see the appeal of the whole "play games 3 years behind" mentality. If you're just now getting into PS3, man, you have some seriously good times on the hella cheap coming up!
Sorry, a little late to the party OP. Word's gotten out for years now. Very slim chances finding the heavy hitters nowadays. The only time I've gotten a heavy hitter is someone slipping up on their pricing or doesn't know what they have via eBay or Craigslist.

I am sure a million bucks would buy it.
Yeah, but there's only one. If you get two dudes with a million bucks wanting it, one is going to go home disappointed. Therefore, the game is expensive AND rare.

Yeah just cuz something is expensive doesn't mean it's not rare. I'm not sure I'm following his logic lol. There are certainly rare games.

Your best bet is to hunt like crazy and hope something slips through. Rare cheap finds are out there, but they are the exception not the rule.

Luck.

N64 is easier, save a select few games (Sculptor's Cut, etc.)
