Ugc vs retro protection cart protectors?

Hey guys, I mainly collect cart only for nes, snes, n64, and genesis. I have been using universal game cases for years and like them well enough. Recently I've discovered retro protection cart protectors. As I kinda lean towards my carts being visable on my shelves I'm very interested in these cart protectors.

I was wondering what you use and if you have good or bad things to say about retro proection cases? The only thing that concerns me is I do play my games and taking them in and out of the retro protection cases I'm not sure if they will hold up or get warped/ damaged after a while..

Please let me know which option you think is best, thanks.

  • I thought Retro Protection just made box and cart protectors. Do they make cases now too?

If you're talking about cart protectors, there are a lot of players in that field including videogameboxprotectors.com, eBay sellers, and more. For full cases I haven't found anything nearly as affordable as UGC.

I have a lot of cart protectors for my Famicom games but I just use sleeves for my loose NES games and UGCs or original cases for nearly everything else with box protectors for most anything that didn't have a plastic case originally.

I've never really worried about the box/cart protector longevity because they are cheaply replaceable and I usually grab the flash cart instead. I did notice that my VGBP.com protectors for SNES/N64 feel like they won't stand up as long as the ones I got around 2001 from an eBay seller. That eBay seller had a lot of official Nintendo display boxes and NOS NP Power Supplies Catalog merch, so I always wondered if my my flexible protectors were some kind of official Nintendo box protectors for display merchandise.
  • I use box protectors and open and close them all the time, probably will be fine. Also as CZroe said they're easy enough to replace it you have to
  • I prefer the clear plastic box/cart protectors over cases. No sense in buying all these plastic squares then hiding them away in an opaque box IMO (I also certainly don't have room for them). I have them from Retro Protection, Video Game Box Protectors, Ebay, Aliexpress, it's all the exact same thing, so just get whatever's cheapest. I think a NA member runs VGBP though?

Yes the retro protection cart protectors not a case but just a clear plastic box for the carts to sit in to keep out dust. I know it's kinda apples to oranges compairihg the two but I grow tired of the way the ugc cases look on my shelf. I guess I will just order some retro protectors with a few extra's and give them a try.

Looking at friends collections who have their carts displayed, I prefer it to the Universal game cases all of the sudden.

You don't see any difference at all? Not even in the fit? Thank you

Hey man, you don't see any difference at all? Not even in the fit?

I bought different box types from different companies, so I'm sure they could be cut differently. They're all cheap, kind of flimsy, flat pack protectors though. None of them feel premium in any way and none of them seem like they're bad. They all stop my boxes from getting accidentally scratched or crushed, which is all I need!

talking specifically about box protectors, I definitely notice a slight difference in the sizes
  • I prefer NES cart only protectors from videogameboxprotectors.com versus retroprotection because they are slightly wider. The cart fits a little looser inside but they are just thick enough to stand on end whereas they won't fall over unlike from retroprotection.

I like retroprotection for the same reason, that is, I like the snuger fit. Also I like how the top(spine) label is displayed without intrusion from the tabs of the plastic case.

  • Top: videogameboxprotector

    Bottom: retroprotection

  • Hey guys, Dan from Retroprotection. I'm on here too but mainly just browse. Not a big fan of starting a thread to sell things or promote anything on here. The vgbp NES cart protectors are also Nintendo DS protectors. They are loose on the cart only because they can also fit the black dust covers and work for DS games. I have that size too but I also made some that are cart only so there is nothing in the way of the game label and they take up less shelf space. Haven't tried to stand them on end and see if they stand up or not but I would say 99% of people have them lined up side by side so it's not an issue. I don't have the clamshell type cases. Not my specialty and they take up a lot of room. They are nice for those who have the space and money for them. Any questions and you can always send me an email at dang@retroprotection.com. Thanks!
